    Abstract
    To assist the IFLA Bibliography Section in gathering more comprehensive information on selection criteria used by national bibliographic agencies in preparing their countries' national bibliography, the Section crafted a survey that the Section chair and the Oslo Programme chair sent electronically and in print form. With the exponential availability of Web and other digital resources, the Section felt a critical need to address how national bibliographic agencies were incorporating these resources into the national bibliography. In preparation for the Section's Programme during the 71st IFLA World Library and Information Congress, the survey was sent to forty-four national libraries and bibliographic agencies in Europe. We restricted dissemination of the survey to European countries, in line with the Section's strategy to plan its programmes in ways that focused on what was happening in the area of the world where the IFLA Congress was being convened. This paper gives an analysis of the data submitted in the responses.

    Abstract
    The 1991 IFLA programme given by the section on bibliography presented the theme that national bibliography becomes part of national memeory by recording the publications of the nation. Examines whether the widely distributed publications of popular culture are 'forgotten' by national bibliography. Considers the bibliographic control of newspapers, mass market publications and erotica in the US bibliographic control system. For the last 2 categories, searches selected titles in the OCLC database where many publications were found with wide distribution but recorded by few or no libraries. Popular culture materials should be recorded in national bibliographies to provide a more extended and historically accurate national memory

    Abstract
    Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

    Abstract
    Describes the work on bibliographic standards and database creation carried out at the National Library of China (NLC) in the Chinese People's Republic since the beginning of automation in 1975. Achievements include: the production of the Chinese Thesaurus, the Chinese library classification, the Dictionary of attributes of Chinese characters and the compilation of the chinese MARC format. Describes current work at the NLC in creating a new title database and retrospective database for the national bibliography. In 1995 NLC set up a special section in charge of name authority data with the aim of establishing a system of online authority control and international distribution of Chinese MARC data

    Abstract
    The article focuses on the EBSCO databases that provide services to libraries. The Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) include resources focusing on librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, and information science. LISTA has more than 21,000 articles from more than 600 periodicals and includes more than 5,000 conference papers and reports. In the database, there are also cited references and the number of times the source was used can also be found within the database. These are helpful tips in bibliography researching.     Abstract
    CD-ROM technology has great potential for storing and anabling access to the type of data contained in national bibliographies. Their ease of replication offer security as well as enabling the information contained to be made more widely availaible. Of the 2 methods used to convert print to electronic data, scanning and keying, Chagwyck-Healey use the latter. In the case of national bibliographies on CD-ROM, new records are created electronically and old records are converted by keying. Chadwyck-Healey have developed an extensive CD-ROM list, focusing on both bibliographic and full text literary works, and has produced national bibliographies on CD-ROM for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain (with the Netherlands to appear shortly). National bibliographies on CD-ROM produced by other bodies are those of finland, Norway, Bulgarian, Singapore and the USA

    Examines the response of the UK Library and Information Council (LINC) to the British Library's consultation paper on the future of the BNB. LINC supports the continuation of the national bibliography in printed form, but is concerned about large areas of the national imprint not covered by it, and suggest that expansion of cooperative data supply should be explored.     Abstract
    This article studies concentration aspects of bibliographies. More, in particular, we study the impact of incompleteness of such a bibliography on its concentration values (i.e., its degree of inequality of production of its sources). Incompleteness is modeled by sampling in the complete bibliography. The model is general enough to comprise truncation of a bibliography as well as a systematic sample on sources or items. In all cases we prove that the sampled bibliography (or incomplete one) has a higher concentration value than the complete one. These models, hence, shed some light on the measurement of production inequality in incomplete bibliographies.

    Abstract
    The LoC compact disc machine readable catalogue (LC CD-MARC or simple CD-MARC) was recently acquired by the Kenneth Dike Library. Its use by the cataloguing staff was evaluated in terms of efficiency (effect on cataloguing time) and effectiveness (effect on monthly output) when compared with using other information sources such as microfiches, CIP data and printed sources: LCSH; LoC NUC; and LC monographic series.     Abstract
    Contribution to a thematic issue on the impact of technology on resource sharing: experimentation and maturity. The creation of a nationwide bibliographic database has been the shared responsibility of the national libraries, the major bibliographic utilities, and the individual libraries. Libraries have contributed their local cataloguing records to the national hosts, the bibliographic utilities, which in turn made these records widely available. The emergence of local shared automated library systems has introduced a new set of stakeholders into this environment.     The Working group on Guidelines for (electronic) national bibliographies has started the work with an analysis of users and use of national bibliographies (NB). In addition to the well known importance of NB for libraries and librarians, other users and their requirements were identified. The results are presented and discussed; both existing and potential users and use were taken into account. The group will continue the work by specifying the functionality to support the various needs of different users.
