    Abstract
Contribution to a specific section on library automation and software. Discusses different kinds of text retrieval systems and how they may overlap, covering: retrieval of document surrogates; retrieval of individual passages of texts; retrieval of complete documents or pages within them; and hypertext and expert systems.

    Abstract
Contribution to a special section on library automation and software. Discusses trends in enquiries received at the Aslib Information Recources Centre since it was set up in Jan 86 and the underlying issues which have affected them, including: the move away from microcomputers to the IBM-PC and the present dominance of the MS-DOS operating system; a growing interest in larger, multi-user computers; and more interest in software for integrated library sytems which include on-line public access catalogues.

    Abstract
Information on editions, printings, and dates is brought together to expedite decision making in an intriguing area of descriptive cataloging. Types of dates are differentiated, including publication date, date of release or transmittal, and legal deposit. Relevant AACR2 rules are listed, along with their rule interpretations, if any. A section of text expands on the definitions and contrasts LC practice and AACR2 rules. Six flow charts illustrate the logical processes involved in choosing a single date or using more than one. Straightforward and complex situations are illustrated with twelve examples.

    Abstract
Traditional cataloging support services such as typing and filing are gradually being eliminated in favor of more sophisticated skills. Library staff members who are specialized in imminently obsolete skills must be re-educated to become productive participants in the "Golden Age" of technology. The Catalog Management section at the Iowa State University Library is attempting to make this process painless and exciting for all of its employees.

    Abstract
The use of interactive videodiscs for preserving, presenting and retrieving pictorial collections in Australia was pioneered at the New South Wales Government Printing Office, Sydney. This project has now stored some 200.000 historical photographs on interactive videodisc, associated with sophisticated microcomputer data bases using the specially developed Just Image software. Videodisc systems to retrieve pictorial material are being used to preserve and present the pictorial collections of various Australian libraries and museums, and standards for the description and indexing of photographs are being developed.

    Abstract
The patterns of overlap between terms which are closely related in a thesaurus are considered. The relationships considered are parent/child, in which one term is a broader term of the other, and sibling in which to 2 terms share the same broader term. The patterns of overlap observed in the MeSH thesaurus with respect to selected MEDLINE postings are examined. The implications of the overlap patterns are discussed, in particular, the impact of the overlap patterns on the potential effectiveness of a proposed algorithm for handling negation is considered.

    Abstract
The degree of variability in the percentage of subject searching in an online public access catalog (OPAC) among branch libraries of one university was studied. A full semester's worth of transactions was analyzed, not sampled. The time units used were hour of the day, day of the week, and week of the semester. The findings show that subject searching varies from a low of 22% to a high of 74% over the hours of a day. Variability for the days of the week ranged from 17% to 64%, and for the weeks of the semester variability ranged from 12% to 70%. Valuable management information on the utilization of the OPAC within each brach library and among all the branch libraries is provided through numerous charts and graphs.

    Abstract
Searches conducted as part of the MEDLINE/Full-Text Research Project revealed that the full-text data bases of clinical medical journal articles (CCML (Comprehensive Core Medical Library) from BRS Information Technologies, and MEDIS from Mead Data Central) did not retrieve all the relevant citations. An analysis of the data indicated that 204 relevant citations were retrieved only by MEDLINE. A comparison of the strategies used on the full-text data bases with the text of the articles of these 204 citations revealed that 2 reasons contributed to these failure. The searcher often constructed a restrictive strategy which resulted in the loss of relevant documents; and as in other kinds of retrieval, the problems of natural language caused the loss of relevant documents.

    Abstract
The first edition of this work, published in 1974, was designed for librarians. It contained an alphabetical listing of subject headings in six widely used sourdes: LCSH, Sears List, Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, New York Times Index, PAIS, and Business Periodical Index. It was a useful and popular tool, but the rapid growth of information has resulted in new access tools, both print and online, and new subject headings. The second edition of Cross-reference index reflects this expansion. The editors have added headings from the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors, the Thesaurus of of Psychological Index Terms, and the Subject Guide to IAC Databases to provide broader coverage of current affairs, social science, amd business. They have also redesigned the format to encourage use by the public as well as by professionals. The expansion has increased the number of main headings from 1.386 to 1.684, and the new format directs users up to 50 comparable or related terms rather than three. This creates easy access to 42.000 search terms. Cross-reference index is in two parts: an alphabetical index and a main entry section. Users consult the alphabetical section first. This refers them to one or more main-entry headings, which are in alphabetical order and numbered to correspond to the index. Under each main entry the related subject headings are arranged alphabetically in a chart format with eight columns, one for each source. An X in a colums shows that the particular source uses a given term. These charts are easy to use and make indexing quirks readily apparent. Under the entry Blood, for example, one can see that LC uses Blood-vessels, while Readers' Guide, Sears, and Psychinfo use Blood vessels. Under Broadcasting, Readers' Guide uses Television broadcasting--News, LC and IAC use Television broadcasting of news, while PAIS uses Television--news. Using this book will cut down on the frustration that often accompanies research. The diversity of the sources included will also provide several points of view, offerings users new approaches that they might not have considered. Cross-reference Index belongs in all reference collections that own most of the sources indexed.
