    Abstract
The 1st of 3 articles discussing the reasons why Web database publishing is a growing trend and the options available for moving databases from desktops to the Web. Reasons concern accessibility, paper saving, distribution costs and the desire to reduce reliance on traditional database publishers. Advises on various types of database management programs which provide for HTML output, and their applications to, e.g. library acquisitions and bibliographies. Distinguishes between server-side and user-side extensions and reviews a number of relevant products

    Abstract
State of the art review of the criteria used to judge and evaluate the quality of databases, including: content, ease of use, accessibility, customer support, documentation, and value to cost ratio. Concludes that the principle factor governing quality is content, defined by the scope and the coverage of the database and its currency, accuracy, consistency and completeness. Scope is determined by its composition and coverage, including time period, number of periodicals and other primary sources, number of articles and geographic and language distribution. Currency is measured by the time lag between publication of the primary source and availability of the corresponding records in the database. Accuracy is governed by the extent to which the records are free from errors of all types. Consistency depends on the extent to which records within the database follow the same rules. Completeness is measured by the consistency with which applicable data elements are assigned to all the records in the database. Reviews the major contributions to the literature in the field and summarizes the background of milestone studies

Compton's encyclopedia 1997 is available both on CD-ROM and online through the consumer online service America Online. Reviews the 1997 edition of the CD-ROM, highlighting its improvements in software. The online version should be used only for current information as its multimedia content and access is very poor

    Abstract
Reviews the CD-ROM and online database version of the abstracting and indexing service LISA. Highlights a few limitations of content of the records, and traces recent changes. The CD-ROM version offers a powerful, advanced version of Bowker search software. The online version is available on Dialog, but some of its power search features are not available on LISA. The CD-ROM is preferable to the online version because of its better browsing and display options and also because, unusually, it was more current

    Abstract
Reviews online and CD-ROM versions of Information Science Abstracts. This abstracting and indexing service focuses on information and computer science. As well as journals it covers patents, monographs, proceedings and conference papers. Highlights a number of problems with its coverage: gaps and premature terminations, duplicate records, and lack of controlles vocabulary for the first 20 years. Compares it to LISA. Assesses the DIALOG version, and the SilverPlatter version. Prefers the CD-ROM version over the online on grounds of cost

    Abstract
A detailed description of how to use Java applets and Common Gateway Interface (CGI)/Dynamic Link Library (DLL) programs for Web publication of textual databases. The advantages of Java applets include low cost, flexible and visually appealing search interfaces, and the ability to be embedded in HTML pages, eliminating the need for Internet service provider permissions for their use. Highlights the FindIt family of Java applets from DoubleOLogic as one of the best product lines in the category. CGI programs may be written in Perl, Java, or some other language, and like DLL programs, must be installed on the server side. Notes that small-scale CGI and DLL applications cost from $150 to $8,000. Highlights Insight from Enigma Inc. as an excellent program at the high end of the cost range

    Abstract
Reviews the current market for CD-ROM databases with particular reference to the online versus CD-ROM versus print debate. Concludes that the most likely scenario is a steady convergence of technologies, at least until the end of the century. Review the current and the most likely future developments in the area of CD-ROM database contents, software, hardware, and marketing. Concludes that users will choose databases on the basis of such factors as: ease of use; power of use; storage and delivery capacity; quality; functionaliy; timeliness; overall appeal; and real cost, not just price. Lists the most likely candidates for successful CD-ROM database development; not yet available. Concludes that Windows user faces will steadily replace DOS based systems, but not unless the Windows replacements are truly better and not just different. Recommends that both Windows and DOS interfaces be loaded onto the same CD-ROM with each database allowing the user to choose which to use. Reviews likely developments in CD-ROM hardware and marketing strategies

    Abstract
Full text databases often cannot substitute for the original print document because they include only the plain text, but not the figures, charts, tables, and screen shots that are useful and sometimes essential for understanding the article. Discusses 3 recently released page-image databases on CD-ROM. UMI's ProQuest Medical Library includes searchable bibliographic records and abstracts for about 120 medical and nursing journals as well as the facsimile of the articles with users able to view the articles in full-page format, just as they first appeared in print: ADONIS Electronic Journal Subscription Services CD offers 400 biomedical journals in CD-ROM page-image format; and Optipat's OptiDisk Custom CD-ROMs provide a customizable service for US patents where customers can order US patents in text only, or image only, or in text and image format with or without a searchable index by submitting the patent numbers required

    Abstract
Discusses CD-ROM interfaces. The majority of CD-ROM databases are offered in one version with only one user interface. This is very different from online where many of the databases are available through the software of several online services. The trend of making available one datafile with different user interfaces is likely to accelerate in 1993 when many of the exclusive agreements between database publishers and CD-ROM producers expire. Covers standards including that of the information handling committee of the US intelligence community, CDx, SilverPlatter, DXS, the Special Interest group of CD-ROM Applications and Technology, CD-ROM Consistent Interface Committee and DIALOG, Jaunty Access to CD-ROM through Simulation On-the-Fly

    Abstract
Recommends for libraries the use of some of the features of HTML 3.2 as the least expensive and sometimes the only feasible approach to making an existing database available on the Web, referring to the Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography as an excellent illustration of what can be achieved. Describes how to apply HTML using the example of a Web prototype of an abstracting and indexing database of 12 volumes of 'Processes in Hawaii', created as part of a course in library and information science at the University of Hawaii. Explains the choosing of primary access points, linking, anchoring references to make the browser jump and show the exact section of the document where a name or term appears, and framing to retain displays simultaneously on the screen
