    Abstract
    This paper describes a graphical interface for the navigation and construction of faceted thesauri that is based on formal concept analysis. Each facet of a thesaurus is represented as a mathematical lattice that is further subdivided into components. Users can graphically navigate through the Java implementation of the interface by clicking on terms that connect facets and components. Since there are many applications for thesauri in the knowledge representation field, such a graphical interface has the potential of being very useful

    Presents EuroMenUSE, a PC-based front-end system developed to improve access to EPOQUE, the major document database of the European Parliament. EuroMenUSEe is an exemplar and the first commercial product to result from the application of the Multilingual MenUSE software shell; in this system it uses the EUROVOC thesaurus. This Common Query interface replaces the Common command Language and provides a more effectve way for end-users to access document databases

    The very nature of traditional interfaces to databases tend to hide their information content and makes it very difficult for a user to build a conceptual model of their contents. Traditional libraries, however, are designed to make their contents and their arrangements clearly visible and capable of browsing.     Abstract
    Demonstrates that a mode of interaction, analogous to the optomechanical principles applied in the Peek-a-Boo system, can be applied in computerized retrieval systems to enhance the quality of human-computer interaction radically and increase effectiveness. The MenUSE (Menu based User Search Engine) software has evolved from constructing explicit Boolean combinations of concepts automatically to using an implicit Boolean searching approach, similar to Peek-a-Boo. Thesauri and classification schemes, together with other searchable values, provide the user with views of a database and a means for the recognition and selection of concepts and other parameters by the end user. The resulting filtering model has been implemented for searching the European Parliament's EPOQUE database and for INSPEC. This second application provides illustrations of the technique for this paper

    Abstract
    Information retrieval and exploration of work domains through databases and integrated information systems has become increasingly important in many modern work settings (as well as in libraries). The problem space of the users is defined on occasion by the dynamically changing requirements from their tasks and goals. it is argued that IR system design should be based on an analysis of the properties of the work domain, the task situation and the user characteristics. The paper describes a general framework for IR system design that has been used in the design of a library system. A special problem identified from use of the framework in domain analysis of fiction retrieval is treated in more detail: mapping the authors' domain structures to the domain structures expressed in users' needs in indexing and representation of fiction

    Abstract
    The growth of medical, academic resources on the World Wide Web has led to much greater incentives and opportunities for nursing and medical students, researchers and practitioners to access Web resources. However, usersindividual differences and the variety of information-retrieval mechanisms provided by medical web resources may combine to reduce the benefits of this information resource. In a study designed to qualitatively analyse the interaction of such individual- and system-differences, a reliable method of representing WWW navigational data was found to be important in assisting traditional methodologies of representation and analysis. The methodology of graphically representing such navigational data, and the support such a technique may offer the qualitative analysis of user-system interactions, is thus described in detail and with reference to one specific example drawn from the data collected. Further, some preliminary findings deriving from the use of graphical and more traditional methodologies in this study are also represented

    Abstract
    This paper presents a description and initial results of an evaluation of EuroMenUSE for the MAC, a system which offers an alternative mode of access to EPOQUE, the document database of the European Parliament. Subjects with a professional interest in European Parliament business, but with no prior knowledge of information retrieval systems, were able to search EPOQUE using EuroMenUSE for the Mac. These end-users achieved better retrieval results than similar subjects using the current Guided Search mode in use at the Parliament. They also performed better than subjects knowledgeable in information retrieval, but who had less subject knowledge, using the SIMBAD Common Command Language interface, the mode of access used by professional documentalists in the Parliament and other European Union Institutions

    Abstract
    Suggests techniques and evaluation criteria for information sources and services available on the Internet. The need for qualitative judgements about library materials and information sources is upheld and accepted techniques and evaluation criteria for printed reference works are outlines. The emergence of non-book materials and electronic information formats has created the need for new techniques and criteria relating specifically to online services and CD-ROM products. Use of the Internet by library and information workers is examined, establishing that the majority of current traffic is communications-based. The authors suggest that networked information sources require the development of additional techniques and criteria for evaluation if they are to be used by information professionals.     Abstract
    This paper examines issues relating to the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) in a future development of view-based searching to Online Public Access Catalogues (OPAC). View-based searching systems, exercising the principles of fully faceted classification techniques for both bibliographic and corporate database retrieval applications, are now being applied to utilise Dewey concept hierarchies in a University OPAC. Issues of efficiency and effectiveness in the evolving organisation and classification of information within libraries are examined to explain why fully faceted classification schemes have yet to realise their full potential in libraries. The key to their application in OPACs lies in the use of faceted classification as pre-coordinated indexing and abandoning the single dimension relative ordering of books on shelves. The need to maintain a single relative physical position on a bookshelf is the major source of complexity in classification. Extensive latent benefits will be realised when systematic subject arrangements, providing alternative views onto OPACs, are coupled to view-based browser and search techniques. Time and effort will be saved, and effectiveness increased, as rapid access is provided to the most appropriate information to satisfy the needs of the user. A future for Dewey Classification divorced from its decimal notation is anticipated

    Abstract
    This paper describes a new OPAC system called The Book House and discusses its relevance as a solution to current OPAC developments. The Book House is an interactive, multimedia, online public access catalogue system designed to support casual and/or novice end-users in information retrieval. It runs on a Macintosh and is available on CD-ROM and disks in English and Danish (it can be purchased from Risø for $100). It comprises an interface and module for classifying and indexing fact and fiction books in the database called Book House Write. It uses icons, text and animation in the display interface in order to enhance the utility of the system for the general public. Both words and pictures can be used for searching, which makes the system suitable for all age groups. It plays on users' previous experiencees with computer games to support learning by doing something in an enjoyable way. A prerequisite for the design of The Book House was a new approach to cognitive analysis of retrieval in libraries. Based on the success of this approach, it is claimed that OPAC systems will only be really useful and widespread (1) when their domain and task characteristics allow supplementary information to be added to existing descriptions of book content in online card catalogues in order to match end-users' intentions and needs, and (2) when the user interface and routes to the databases are configured as an integrated and uniform set of displays which match the search strategies of users, as well as their mental capabilities and limitations

    Abstract
    Selection of search terms in an online search environment can be facilitated by the visual display of a knowledge map showing the various concepts and their links. This paper reports an a preliminary research aimed at designing a prototype knowledge map using DDC and its visual display. The prototype knowledge map created using the Protégé and TGViz freeware has been demonstrated, and further areas of research in this field are discussed.

    1. Introduction Web search engines and digital libraries usually expect the users to use search terms that most accurately represent their information needs. Finding the most appropriate search terms to represent an information need is an age old problem in information retrieval. Keyword or phrase search may produce good search results as long as the search terms or phrase(s) match those used by the authors and have been chosen for indexing by the concerned information retrieval system. Since this does not always happen, a large number of false drops are produced by information retrieval systems. The retrieval results become worse in very large systems that deal with millions of records, such as the Web search engines and digital libraries. Vocabulary control tools are used to improve the performance of text retrieval systems. Thesauri, the most common type of vocabulary control tool used in information retrieval, appeared in the late fifties, designed for use with the emerging post-coordinate indexing systems of that time. They are used to exert terminology control in indexing, and to aid in searching by allowing the searcher to select appropriate search terms. A large volume of literature exists describing the design features, and experiments with the use, of thesauri in various types of information retrieval systems (see for example, Furnas et.al., 1987; Bates, 1986, 1998; Milstead, 1997, and Shiri et al., 2002).

    Abstract
    Brajnik et alia describe their view of an effective retrieval interface, one which coaches the searcher using stored knowledge not only of database structure, but of strategic situations which are likely to occur, such as repeating failed tactics in a low return search, or failing to try relevance feedback techniques. The emphasis is on the system suggesting search strategy improvements by relating them to an analysis of work entered so far and selecting and ranking those found relevant. FIRE is an interface utilizing these techniques. It allows the user to assign documents to useful, topical and trash folders, maintains thesauri files automatically searchable on query terms, and it builds, using user entries and a rule system, a picture of the retrieval situation from which it generates suggestions. Six participants used FIRE in INSPEC20K database searches, two for their own information needs and four needs provided by the authors. Satisfaction was measured in a structured post search interview, behavior by log analysis, and performance by recall and precision in the canned searches. Participants found the suggestions helpful, but insisted they would have taken those approaches without such assistance. Users took the suggestions offered and preferred those demanding the least effort.
