    Abstract
    The current subject gateways have evolved over time when the discipline of Internet resource discovery was in its infancy. This is reflected by the lack of well-established, light-weight, deployable, easy-to-use, standards for metadata and information retrieval. We provide an introduction to the architecture, standards and software solutions in use by subject gateways, and to the issues that must be addressed to support future subject gateways

    Abstract
    Eine ganze Anzahl von Bibliotheken in Europa befaßt sich mit der Entwicklung von Internet Subject Gateways - einer Serviceleistung, die den Nutzern helfen soll, qualitativ hochwertige Internetquellen zu finden. Subject Gateways wie SOSIG (The Social Science Information Gateway) sind bereits seit einigen Jahren im Internet verfügbar und stellen eine Alternative zu Internet-Suchmaschinen wie AltaVista und Verzeichnissen wie Yahoo dar. Bezeichnenderweise stützen sich Subject Gateways auf die Fertigkeiten, Verfahrensweisen und Standards der internationalen Bibliothekswelt und wenden diese auf Informationen aus dem Internet an. Dieses Referat will daher betonen, daß Bibliothekare/innen idealerweise eine vorherrschende Rolle im Aufbau von Suchservices für Internetquellen spielen und daß Information Gateways eine Möglichkeit dafür darstellen. Es wird einige der Subject Gateway-Initiativen in Europa umreißen und die Werkzeuge und Technologien beschreiben, die vom Projekt DESIRE entwickelt wurden, um die Entwicklung neuer Gateways in anderen Ländern zu unterstützen. Es wird auch erörtert, wie IMesh, eine Gruppe für Gateways aus der ganzen Welt eine internationale Strategie für Gateways anstrebt und versucht, Standards zur Umsetzung dieses Projekts zu entwickeln

    Abstract
    'Quality-controlled subject gateways' are Internet services which apply a rich set of quality measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to secure a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display a rich description of these resources with standards-based metadata. Regular checking and updating ensure good collection management. A main goal is to provide a high quality of subject access through indexing resources using controlled vocabularies and by offering a deep classification structure for advanced searching and browsing. This article provides an initial empirical overview of existing services of this kind, their approaches and technologies, based on proposed working definitions and typologies of subject gateways

    Abstract
    Digital Libraries currently face the challenge of integrating many different types of research information (e.g. publications, primary data, expert's profiles, institutional profiles, project information etc.) according to their scientific users' needs. To date no general, integrated model for knowledge organization and retrieval in Digital Libraries exists. This causes the problem of structural and semantic heterogeneity due to the wide range of metadata standards, indexing vocabularies and indexing approaches used for different types of information. The research presented in this paper focuses on areas in which activities are being undertaken in the field of Digital Libraries in order to treat semantic interoperability problems. We present a model for the integrated retrieval of factual and textual data which combines multiple approaches to semantic interoperability und sets them into context. Embedded in the research cycle, traditional content indexing methods for publications meet the newer, but rarely used ontology-based approaches which seem to be better suited for representing complex information like the one contained in survey data. The benefits of our model are (1) easy re-use of available knowledge organisation systems and (2) reduced efforts for domain modelling with ontologies.

    Abstract
    cibera - die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Ibero-Amerika / Spanien / Portugal - bildet nun bereits seit einem Jahr einen zentralen Einstiegspunkt für die InternetRecherche nach Fachinformationen zum spanischen und portugiesischen Sprach- und Kulturraum. Ein guter Zeitpunkt, um das Projekt ausführlich vorzustellen, eine erste Bilanz zu ziehen und einen Ausblick auf geplante Entwicklungen zu geben. cibera ist eines von zzt. 40 DFG- sowie BMBF-finanzierten Fachportalen (davon sind zzt. 35 online), die gemeinsam das interdisziplinäre wissenschaftliche Informationssystem vascoda bilden, eine Suchmaschine für die Fachwissenschaften (www.vascoda.de). Die einzelnen Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken ähneln einander im Aufbau und haben das gleiche Ziel: Sie sollen wissenschaftliche Information für ihre Disziplin bündeln, nachweisen, übersichtlich anbieten und mit Zugriff auf elektronische Volltexte, Dokumentenlieferdienste und Pay-perview-Optionen den Nutzern möglichst leicht zugänglich machen. Die Anzahl von Fachportalen im vascoda-Verbund wächst beständig, perspektivisch sollen alle Fachgebiete abgedeckt werden. Die ersten Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken sind bereits seit Jahren online, andere sind gerade erst in der Planung. Da die Technologie sich rasant weiterentwickelt und die Erwartungen der Nutzer an elektronische Informationssysteme sich ebenso rasant steigern, unterscheiden sich die einzelnen Fachportale trotz der vergleichbaren Zielsetzung in Realisierung und verwendeter Technik doch zum Teil bereits erheblich voneinander. cibera konnte bei der Konzeption und insbesondere bei der technischen Umsetzung bereits auf die Erfahrungen verschiedener anderer Portale zurückgreifen und sich an den neuesten im Rahmen von vascoda erarbeiteten Standards orientieren.

    Abstract
    CORC is an OCLC project that id developing tools and systems to enable libraries to provide enhanced access to Internet resources. By adapting and extending library techniques and procedures, we are developing a self-supporting system capable of describing a large and useful subset of the Web. CORC is more a system for hosting and supporting subject gateways than a gateway itself and relies on large-scale cooperation among libraries to maintain a centralized database. By supporting emerging metadata standards such as Dublin Core and other standards such as Unicode and RDF, CORC broadens the range of libraries and librarians able to participate. Current plans are for OCLC as a full service in July 2000

    Abstract
    Clearinghouses - or subject gateways - are domain-specific collections of links to resources an the Internet. The links are described with metadata and structured according to a domain-specific subject hierarchy. Users access the information by searching in the metadata or by browsing the subject hierarchy. The standards for metadata vary across existing Clearinghouses and different technologies for storing and accessing the metadata are used. This makes it difficult to distribute the editorial or administrative work involved in maintaining a clearinghouse, or to exchange information with other systems. DBClear is a generic, platform-independent clearinghouse system, whose metadata schema can be adapted to different standards. The data is stored in a relational database. It includes a workflow component to Support distributed maintenance and automation modules for link checking and metadata extraction. The presentation of the clearinghouse an the Web can be modified to allow seamless integration into existing web sites.

    Abstract
    Since the 1960s, librarians have projected a vision of a digital library that offers seamless access to a vast world of scholarly information of all types. Until the 1990s, however, digital technologies lacked the power and capacity to deliver on the vision. During the 1990s, technology platforms, networking technologies, electronic resources, and the evolution of standards matured sufficiently to lay the foundation for the vision to be fulfilled. As this maturation was taking place, the rapid growth of electronic resources was based on numerous proprietary systems making access across such systems impossible. The scholars portal project is an effort to create a search and retrieval tool that will provide an interim solution to this problem until such time as those systems are built on a unified set of standards and data formats.

    Abstract
    Libraries have always been an inspiration for the standards and technologies developed by semantic web activities. However, except for the Dublin Core specification, semantic web and social networking technologies have not been widely adopted and further developed by major digital library initiatives and projects. Yet semantic technologies offer a new level of flexibility, interoperability, and relationships for digital repositories. Kruk and McDaniel present semantic web-related aspects of current digital library activities, and introduce their functionality; they show examples ranging from general architectural descriptions to detailed usages of specific ontologies, and thus stimulate the awareness of researchers, engineers, and potential users of those technologies. Their presentation is completed by chapters on existing prototype systems such as JeromeDL, BRICKS, and Greenstone, as well as a look into the possible future of semantic digital libraries. This book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in areas like digital libraries, the semantic web, social networks, and information retrieval. This audience will benefit from detailed descriptions of both today's possibilities and also the shortcomings of applying semantic web technologies to large digital repositories of often unstructured data.

    Abstract
    Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) hat im Juni 2005 die zweite Förderphase für das fachübergreifende Internetportal vascoda bewilligt. Ziel der zweiten Projekt-Phase ist es, ein gut strukturiertes Informationsangebot mit einheitlichem Zugang für alle Nutzergruppen zu schaffen. vascoda wird bis Ende 2007 zu einer nutzerorientierten und transparenten Dienstleistung für die Wissenschaft ausgebaut. Insbesondere sollen die Funktionalitäten optimiert und die Suchergebnisse durch eine stärkere Standardisierung verbessert werden. Gefördert werden so genannte Kompetenzzentren in Göttingen, Kiel und Bonn, die für verschiedene Bereiche die Verantwortung übernehmen. Unter der Federführung der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen werden gemeinsam mit der SUB Hamburg und Der Deutschen Bibliothek in Frankfurt die Themenbereiche "Metadaten, Standards und Heterogenitätsbehandlung" bearbeitet. Ziel des Projektes ist die Suche bei vascoda wesentlich zu verbessern und den Nutzerinnen relevante Trefferlisten anzubieten. Die über 40 vascoda Partner verständigen sich auf bestimmte Mindeststandards, die sie bei der Lieferung ihrer Daten an das vascoda Portal einhalten. Dadurch wird eine bessere inhaltliche und technische Harmonisierung auf der zentralen Ebene von vascoda erreicht. Die SUB Göttingen wird insbesondere ihre Expertise aus den bereits geförderten DFG Projekten im Bereich Metadaten und Standards in die Entwicklungen einbringen und damit ihr Kompetenzzentrum "Metadaten und Standards" weiter ausbauen. Die DFG fördert überdies die Homogenisierung der Fachangebote durch einen intensivierten Wissenstransfer zwischen den beteiligten Einrichtungen und durch die Entwicklung neuer einheitlicher Funktionalitäten. Die Deutsche Zentralbibliothek für Wirtschaftswissenschaften (ZBW) in Kiel organisiert dabei insbesondere Workshops zur Wissensvermittlung und erstellt Leitfäden zu übergreifenden Themen, um die verschiedenen Fachangebote auf den gleichen Informationsstand zu bringen. Zudem wird am Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften in Bonn ein Musterportal für Fachangebote erstellt, um auch auf dieser Ebene zu einer stärkeren Standardisierung beizutragen.

    Abstract
    For many years metadata has been recognised as a significant component of the digital information environment. Substantial work has gone into creating complex metadata schemes for describing digital content. Yet increasingly Web search engines, and Google in particular, are the primary means of discovering and selecting digital resources, although they make little use of metadata. This article considers how digital libraries can gain more value from their metadata by adapting it for Google users, while still following well-established principles and standards for cataloguing and digital preservation.

    Abstract
    The Internet would not be very useful if communication were limited to textual exchanges between speakers of English located in the United States. Rather, its value lies in its ability to enable people from multiple nations, speaking multiple languages, to employ multiple media in interacting with each other. While computer networks broke through national boundaries long ago, they remain much more effective for textual communication than for exchanges of sound, images, or mixed media -- and more effective for communication in English than for exchanges in most other languages, much less interactions involving multiple languages. Supporting searching and display in multiple languages is an increasingly important issue for all digital libraries accessible on the Internet. Even if a digital library contains materials in only one language, the content needs to be searchable and displayable on computers in countries speaking other languages. We need to exchange data between digital libraries, whether in a single language or in multiple languages. Data exchanges may be large batch updates or interactive hyperlinks. In any of these cases, character sets must be represented in a consistent manner if exchanges are to succeed. Issues of interoperability, portability, and data exchange related to multi-lingual character sets have received surprisingly little attention in the digital library community or in discussions of standards for information infrastructure, except in Europe. The landmark collection of papers on Standards Policy for Information Infrastructure, for example, contains no discussion of multi-lingual issues except for a passing reference to the Unicode standard. The goal of this short essay is to draw attention to the multi-lingual issues involved in designing digital libraries accessible on the Internet. Many of the multi-lingual design issues parallel those of multi-media digital libraries, a topic more familiar to most readers of D-Lib Magazine. This essay draws examples from multi-media DLs to illustrate some of the urgent design challenges in creating a globally distributed network serving people who speak many languages other than English. First we introduce some general issues of medium, culture, and language, then discuss the design challenges in the transition from local to global systems, lastly addressing technical matters. The technical issues involve the choice of character sets to represent languages, similar to the choices made in representing images or sound. However, the scale of the language problem is far greater. Standards for multi-media representation are being adopted fairly rapidly, in parallel with the availability of multi-media content in electronic form. By contrast, we have hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of years worth of textual materials in hundreds of languages, created long before data encoding standards existed. Textual content from past and present is being encoded in language and application-specific representations that are difficult to exchange without losing data -- if they exchange at all. We illustrate the multi-language DL challenge with examples drawn from the research library community, which typically handles collections of materials in 400 or so languages. These are problems faced not only by developers of digital libraries, but by those who develop and manage any communication technology that crosses national or linguistic boundaries.

    Abstract
    Digital libraries have become commodity in the current world of Internet. More and more information is produced, and more and more non-digital information is being rendered available. The new, more user friendly, community-oriented technologies used throughout the Internet are raising the bar of expectations. Digital libraries cannot stand still with their technologies; if not for the sake of handling rapidly growing amount and diversity of information, they must provide for better user experience matching and overgrowing standards set by the industry. The next generation of digital libraries combine technological solutions, such as P2P, SOA, or Grid, with recent research on semantics and social networks. These solutions are put into practice to answer a variety of requirements imposed on digital libraries.

    Abstract
    The Europeana Data Model (EDM) is a new approach towards structuring and representing data delivered to Europeana by the various contributing cultural heritage institutions. The model aims at greater expressivity and flexibility in comparison to the current Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE), which it is destined to replace. The design principles underlying the EDM are based on the core principles and best practices of the Semantic Web and Linked Data efforts to which Europeana wants to contribute. The model itself builds upon established standards like RDF(S), OAI-ORE, SKOS, and Dublin Core. It acts as a common top-level ontology which retains original data models and information perspectives while at the same time enabling interoperability. The paper elaborates on the aforementioned aspects and the design principles which drove the development of the EDM.

    Abstract
    In this paper, we present a formulation and case studies of the conditions for patenting content-based retrieval processes in digital libraries, especially in image libraries. Inventors and practitioners demand a formulation of the conditions for patenting data-processing processes as computer-related inventions in the form of computer programs. A process for content-based retrieval often consists of a combination of prior disclosed means and also comprises means for parameter setting that is adjusted to retrieve specific kinds of images in certain narrow domains. We focus on requirements for technical advancement (nonobviousness) in the combination of data-processing means, i.e., processes and specification (enablement) on the means for parameter setting in computer programs. Our formulation follows the standards of patent examination and litigation on computer-related inventions in the US. We confirm the feasibility and accountability of our formulation by applying it to several inventions patented in the US.

    Abstract
    Portale sind zu einem Mittel geworden, Informationsangebote aus dem Netz zu bündeln. Inwieweit dadurch für die Nutzer/innen ein Mehrwert geschaffen wird, hängt von den zusätzlichen Leistungen, insbesondere der Individualisierung der Nutzung ab. Internationale Vorgaben für die Bewertung der Nutzbarkeit von websites können auf die Beurteilung von Portalen übertragen werden. Wichtig erscheint die Berücksichtigung von Normen und Standards sowohl bei der Strukturierung der Informationsangebote wie bei der Berücksichtigung von kontrolliertem Vokabular, um die Retrievalresultate zu verbessern. Neben den fachlichen Aspekten bilden die betriebswirtschaftlichen eine stärker beachtete Seite der Entwicklung von Kulturportalen, zumal die wichtigen Geldgeber die Nachhaltigkeit geförderter Projekte erwarten.

    Abstract
    Purpose - One of the unresolved problems of the global information society is ensuring the long-term accessibility of digital documents. The project kopal tackles this problem head-on: in a three-year project kopal's objective is the practical testing and implementation of a cooperatively created and operated long-term archival system for digital resources. Design/methodology/approach - The system will be implemented in accordance with international standards for long-term archiving and metadata within the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) framework. The project partners, Die Deutsche Bibliothek (DDB), Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen), IBM Deutschland GmbH and the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG), will establish a cooperatively transferable solution for cultural heritage institutions, as well as for business and industry. Findings - Within the project, the project partners DDB and SUB Göttingen are developing software for the input and access of data, which will be released under an open-source license. Research limitations/implications - Long-term preservation methods and strategies will be discussed in general in the paper. Practical implications - The project will present a stable and reusable platform for additional partners and users, especially for cultural heritage organisations. Originality/value - The solution is based on Digital Information and Archiving System (DIAS), jointly devised by IBM and the National Library of The Netherlands in The Hague, and it will be adapted to the needs of the project with several extensions. Establishing a collaborative solution for long-term preservation is a milestone in the development of systems for the long-term availability of digital objects.
