Abstract

This paper reviews the enormous changes in cataloging and classification reflected in the literature of 2003 and 2004, and discusses major themes and issues. Traditional cataloging and classification tools have been re-vamped and new resources have emerged. Most notable themes are: the continuing influence of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Control (FRBR); the struggle to understand the ever-broadening concept of an "information entity"; steady developments in metadata-encoding standards; and the globalization of information systems, including multilinguistic challenges.

Abstract

The topic of electronic journals (e-journals) dominated the serials literature from 2000 to 2003. This review is limited to the events and issues within the broad topics of cost, management, and archiving. Coverage of cost includes such initiatives as PEAK, JACC, BioMed Central, SPARC, open access, the "Big Deal," and "going e-only." Librarians combated the continued price increase trend for journals, fueled in part by publisher mergers, with the economies found with bundled packages and consortial subscriptions. Serials management topics include usage statistics; core title lists; staffing needs; the "A-Z list" and other services from such companies as Serials Solutions; "deep linking"; link resolvers such as SFX; development of standards or guidelines, such as COUNTER and ERMI; tracking of license terms; vendor mergers; and the demise of integrated library systems and a subscription agent's bankruptcy. Librarians archived print volumes in storage facilities due to space shortages. Librarians and publishers struggled with electronic archiving concepts, discussing questions of who, where, and how. Projects such as LOCKSS tested potential solutions, but missing online content due to the Tasini court case and retractions posed more archiving difficulties. The serials literature captured much of the upheaval resulting from the rapid pace of changes, many linked to the advent of e-journals.

Abstract

Many libraries are still conducting, or are contemplating, retrospective conversion (recon) projects in order to automate their catalogues. Unfortunately, many of the records retrieved from bibliographic utilities require some degree of editing in order that they (a) correctly represent items in the local catalogue and (b) conform to local cataloguing standards. There is little disagreement with this argument. But, the extent of editing necessary is highly debatable. The recon literature is reviewed on the issues of quality control, special material formats and collections, and costs.

Abstract

This review of 2004 and 2005 serials literature covers the themes of cost, management, and access. Interwoven through the serials literature of these two years are the importance of collaboration, communication, and linkages between scholars, publishers, subscription agents and other intermediaries, and librarians. The emphasis in the literature is on electronic serials and their impact on publishing, libraries, and vendors. In response to the crisis of escalating journal prices and libraries' dissatisfaction with the Big Deal licensing agreements, Open Access journals and publishing models were promoted. Libraries subscribed to or licensed increasing numbers of electronic serials. As a result, libraries sought ways to better manage licensing and subscription data (not handled by traditional integrated library systems) by implementing electronic resources management systems. In order to provide users with better, faster, and more current information on and access to electronic serials, libraries implemented tools and services to provide A-Z title lists, title by title coverage data, MARC records, and OpenURL link resolvers.

Abstract

On the 22nd of July, 1989, the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) was founded. Starting in August 1989 ISKO had an official organ, the journal International Classification. This Journal was founded in 1974 by Dr. Ingetraut Dahlberg, the first President of the ISKO. With volume 20 (1993) the name of the journal was changed to Knowledge Organization. This bibliography has been compiled on the occasion of the second decade of ISKO. This bibliography indexes the content of International Classification and Knowledge Organization starting with International Classification volume 16(1989) issue 3 and ending with Knowledge Organization volume 26(1999) issue 3. All articles and all book reviews are included. From the news items, only those for which an author is mentioned and that were especially written for International Classification or Knowledge Organization, are entered in this bibliography. The bibliography also contains the papers of conferences organized by the International Society for Knowledge Organization, one of its national chapters, or sponsored by the ISKO or one of its chapters. If we overlooked a conference of which the papers should have been included, we apologize for this omission. A list of the conferences included can be found in the list of abbreviations. The bibliography is based on the literature that was available to the compilers. However, not all conference proceedings included in the bibliography could be found in sources available to us. In these cases descriptions from the bibliographies in International Classification and Knowledge Organization were used. For a few proceedings the help of national chapters was sought and obtained. They deserve our thanks. The bibliography is ordered according to the classification used for the current bibliography in Knowledge Organization. The complete classification - as it is used now - is published in this issue of Knowledge Organization. The bibliography also includes an Author Index. Abstract

This annotaed bibliography lists materials dealing with information literacy including instruction in the use of information resources, research, and computer skills related to retrieving, using, and evaluating information. This review, the 21nd to be published in RSR, includes items in English published in 1995. After 21 years, the title of this literature has been changed from 'Library orientation and instruction' to 'Library instruction and information literacy' to indicate the growing trend of moving to information skills instruction. Abstract

More than 5000 publications related to library user instruction and information literacy have been published and reviewed in the past thirty years. New developments in education and technology during the last two decades have affected user instruction and have led to the emergence of information literacy. Based on needs related to the rapid development of information technology and the evolving information society, librarians have begun teaching information skills to all types of users to ensure that they gain information fluency so they can become productive and effective information users both in the education environment and in the work environment. The number of publications related to user instruction and information literacy, like the field itself, show phenomenal growth during the past three decades as demonstrated by the fact that in 1973 twenty-eight publications were reviewed, and in 2002 more than 300 publications dealing with the topic of information literacy will be issued. It is noteworthy that in the last decade there has been a tremendous growth in publications related to information literacy globally. During the 1970s, publications indicate that user instruction activities were of concern primarily to librarians in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. At the present time, publications indicate a major concern with information literacy not only in the countries mentioned above but also in China, Germany, Mexico, Scandinavia, Singapore, South Africa, South America, Spain, and others. On an annual hasis, the majority of the publications have addressed information literacy in academic libraries (60 percent) followed by publications related to information literacy instruction in school media centers (20 percent).
