    Abstract
Describes a model of meta information architectures (header, local index, and directory) and presents 3 current or proposed meta information structures for networked information resources, such as Internet resources, with applicability to organization and access in libraries and networked information environments. Special emphasis is given to the Text Encoding Initiative's TEI Header and Independent Header as a model for meta information for academic and library needs. Recommendation is made for the specification of a generalized SGML meta information header based on the principles of the TEI Independent Header, to address the needs of cataloguing, automatic processing, and serving of networkd information resources

    Abstract
Defends the role of quality cataloguing. It is only with adequate records that users will be able to find the information they require. It is a prerequisite for efficient machine retrieval and integrated services. Quality MARC records and the intellectual structure of cataloguing are essential is standards of service are to be maintained

    Abstract
It is contended that while there are considerable numbers of people interested in the application of information retrieval (IR) software on their home computers in their professional, working and recreational activities, they are not very well served in using it to best advantage. Describes the writer's attempts to transfer some of the recorded good practice of the first information managers to contemporary problems. Data input standards devoted to library organisation may be developed to establish a set of principles to encourage the consistent organisation of the entire range of objects which might be represented in databases. Specific areas of difficulty are examined.

    Abstract
Defines the concept of creativity of cataloguing. Creativity presupposes thorough knowledge of cataloguing rules and standards. The goal of creative cataloguing is to adapt records in order to enhance user access to information in the library database. Using examples from various types of serial records, discusses creative cataloguing methods in the online environment

    Abstract
This paper reviews issues related to the cataloging of Internet resources and considers shortand long-term directions for cataloging and the general provision of library services for remotely accessible, electronic information resources. The strengths and weakness of using a library catalog model to improve access to Internet resources are discussed and compared with a review of related efforts. Based on experience gained through two OCLC Internet cataloging projects, the authors recommend continued and vigorous appplication of library cataloging standards and methods for Internet resources with the expectation that catalogs, cataloging, and libraries in general will continue to evolve.

    Abstract
Hitherto, the ISBD for nonbook materials and computer files have provided standards for cataloguing electronic media. However, new technology, particular digitisation with its facility to create multimedia resources, has highlighted the need for new bibliographic standards. In the Netherlands the Royal Library, Pica and SURFnet, in 1993, implemented a project to create standards for networked information resources. The results will provide useful guidelines unitl the publication of an ISBD for electronic resources

    Abstract
Defines the virtual catalogue as a bibliographic database built up from a variety of sources, but in which differences between those sources and the means of accessing individual records from particular files are largely invisible to the user. Discusses the issue of common standards for bibliographic records in the virtual catalogue based on the author's experience of the UK Copyright Shared Cataloguing Programme. Considers the problem of deviations from standards, and suggests that in the are of the virtual catalogue present standards should be reconsidered and modified as appropriate. Access, display of records, and searching techniques are 3 areas that need such reconsideration. Recommends greater cooperation with the book trade in order to maximize the use of published information

    Abstract
Two forces acting on the bibliographic control of serials are described: the desire to harmonize international standards and practices, and the impact of electronic serials. By breaking out of traditional publishing patterns, electronic serials have called into question current cataloging rules definitions (including the very definition of ''serial''), and practices. Three key standards that affect bibliographic control of serials are currently undergoing revision: AACR2, ISBD(S), and ISSN rules. Areas where harmonization of these rules and standards would be of most benefit to the cataloging and information communities are discussed.

    Abstract
Examines international efforts to promote metadata as a common, interactive resource description tool for the Internet. These efforts centre on the Dublin Core Element Set, but include qualifiers such as those promoted by the Canberra Qualifiers. The LoC Network Development and MARC Standards Office maintains the Dublin Core / MARC / GILS (Government Information Location Standards) crosswalk which maps the common and correlative elements of each system. Describes current international initiatives and issues. Describes the Nordic metadata project which is aiming to create the basic elements of a metadata production and utilization system based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. Describes the WWW consortium efforts in this area

    Abstract
Considers the issues of the filing order of bibliographic catalog entries as it relates to information retrieval. Discusses the main problems created by filing order in computerized catalogues and analyses the codes drawn up by the Library of Congress, the British Library and the American Library Association. Describes the efforts made by IFLA and ISO to arrive at greater international Uniformity of filing order rules. The resulting standards ISO 7154-1983 (Bibliographic filing principles) and ISO/TR 8393-1985 (Bibliographic filing rules) are described. Discusses the position of Spanish cataloguing rules in relation to these international standards

    Abstract
Article appearing as part of an issue devoted to the theme, Serials Cataloguing: Modern Perspectives and International Developments. Pt.2. In 1988, a revision of AACR2 and a revised edition of the ISBD for serials were published. Discusses and compares the origins of theses 2 standards and their relationship. Describes the inconsistencies between the 2 texts and evaluates their compatibility. Concludes that there is a high degree of compatability on major points but that relatively little progress has been made since the original editions in reducing the substantial number of minor differences

    Abstract
Metadata, or 'data about data', have been created and used for centuries in the print environment, though the term has its origins in the world of electronic information management. Presents the close relationship between traditional library cataloguing and the documentation of electronic data files (known as 'metadata'), showing that cataloguing is changing under the influence of information technology, but also that metadata provision is essentially an extension of traditional cataloguing processes

    Abstract
Discusses the process of creating bibliographic and cataloguing standards after the implementation of the VTLS (Virginia Tech Library System) in major Polish academic libraries. Examines the adoption of the USMARC format as standard for the transfer of bibliographic data in Poland and the editorial work of VTLS libraries resulting in publication of USMARC format manuals in Polish libraries. Studies the question of authority control, with special attention given to the creation of the CKHW (a common online authority database), which includes authority records for series, uniform titles, personal, corporate, geographic names and topical subject headings. Discusses the development of the KABA thesaurus, which is influenced by the RAMEAU and LoC subject indexing systems and examines the structure of subject authority MARC records, as used by Polish libraries. Considers the effect of the VTLS implementation upon the establishment of national and local library consortia in Poland

    Abstract
Reports the results of research designed to explore the feasibility of automatically deriving name access points from machine readable title pages of English language monographs. Results show that approximately 88% of the access points selected by the Library of Congress or the National Library of Medicine could be automatically derived from title page data. These results have implications for the design of bibliographic standards and on-line catalogues.

    Abstract
In 1994 the International Council on Archives adopted a professional standard for the creation of different tyoes of finding aids to archives: the International Standard Archival Description (General) (ISAD(G)). Discusses the rule concerning multilevel descriptions, a traditional hierarchical technique for describing paper documents as a fonds and its parts. Considers approaches to the problem of entering preexisting information into ISAD based systems. Discusses the International Standard Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families to be introduced in 1996
