    Abstract
Discusses the potential of the Guide hypertext system as an appropriate vehicle for the electronic publishing of periodicals. Briefly describes some of the systems that have been or are being used as vehicles for electronic periodicals, including a previous electronic periodical project using Guide. Describes the features of the Guide system and to the Guide prototype electronic periodical developed at the Computing Laboratory, Kent University at Canterbury, UK. Outlines the functions of the 2 main features of Guide; buttons and contexts; which are particularly useful for electronic periodical interface development; and describes tools to aid periodical browsing and reading that have been implemented or customized for the Guide periodical application. These include tools for searching, annotating, saving and printing periodicals components

    Abstract
We investigate the state of multilingualism across the social sciences and humanities (SSH) using a comprehensive data set of research outputs from seven European countries (Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Flanders [Belgium], Norway, Poland, and Slovenia). Although English tends to be the dominant language of science, SSH researchers often produce culturally and societally relevant work in their local languages. We collected and analyzed a set of 164,218 peer-reviewed journal articles (produced by 51,063 researchers from 2013 to 2015) and found that multilingualism is prevalent despite geographical location and field. Among the researchers who published at least three journal articles during this time period, over one-third from the various countries had written their work in at least two languages. The highest share of researchers who published in only one language were from Flanders (80.9%), whereas the lowest shares were from Slovenia (57.2%) and Poland (59.3%). Our findings show that multilingual publishing is an ongoing practice in many SSH research fields regardless of geographical location, political situation, and/or historical heritage. Here we argue that research is international, but multilingual publishing keeps locally relevant research alive with the added potential for creating impact.

    Abstract
Electronic publishing brings about some substantial shifts in technological as well as socio-political patterns that were in place during the era of paper publications. The tension between producer and consumer side of the information cycle is the most significant feature of this change. Authors and publishers try to maximise their revenues from the marketing of information and backed by the possibilities of technology they force major changes in legislation governing the area of (public) information access. In this environment, the society's interest in a wide-spread accessibility of electronic data must be balanced by substantial financial investments - a solution that only the rich economies of the world can feel comfortable with

    Abstract
Inscriptions are defined as traces of scientific research production that are embodied in material artifacts and media, which encompass a wide variety of nonverbal forms such as graphs, diagrams, and tables. Inscription serves as a fundamental rhetorical device in research outputs and practices. As many inscriptions are deeply rooted in a scientific research paradigm, they can be used to evaluate the level of scientificity of a scientific field. This is specifically helpful to understand the relationships between research traditions in digital humanities (DH), a highly cross-disciplinary between various humanities and scientific traditions. This paper presents a quantitative, community-focused examination of how inscriptions are used in English-language research articles in DH journals. We randomly selected 252 articles published between 2011 and 2020 from a representative DH journal list, and manually classified the inscriptions and author domains in these publications. We found that inscriptions have been increasingly used during the past decade, and their uses are more intensive in publications led by STEM authors comparing to other domains. This study offers a timely survey of the disciplinary landscape of DH from the perspective of inscriptions and sheds light on how different research approaches collaborate and combat in the field of DH.

    Abstract
Discusses the social and economic factors involved in the implementation of the electronic library. Discusses the ways in which the library metaphor may be restricitng thinking and the development of systems that may approach more closely the ideals of scholarly communication. Such a system not only necessitates new models for the concepts of periodical, library and publishing, but also new interpersonal and institutional practices, and a new basis for the economic conditions associated with communication. Electronic communication systems offer the possibility not only of disseminating information over networks but of interpersonal communication among collaborating authors or producers and, perhaps more important, between author, reader, user or consumer of the information. For example, electronic mail forms included in electronic periodicals along data discussed in the articles could lead to the evolution of electronic periodicals into electronic seminars or electronic common rooms. Poses the question of whether commercial publishers will be able to find a role to play in this process and fails to suggest an answer

    Abstract
Purpose - This article aims to report on research conducted inside British national media organisations. The research was designed to investigate the impact on the working practices of journalists of the process of production convergence - the trend towards news reporting in more than one medium in formerly single-medium organisations. The article describes the changes that are taking place and the ways journalists are reacting to them. Design/methodology/approach - Interviews were conducted with 20 journalists during 2002 and 2003. The interviews were with journalists working in newsrooms at the BBC, Sky News, The Guardian and the Financial Times. Findings - The data show that while multimedia news is becoming well established, the multimedia journalist has been slow to arrive. This is because of the pressures that multi-media working adds to the journalist's daily routine and a concern over the impact on the quality of output. Research limitations/implications - The media environment is evolving rapidly and research findings on this topic quickly go out of date, but the findings presented here offer valuable insights into the news production processes operating in British national media organisations and the ways journalists are adapting to, and are likely to continue to adapt to, changes in production technologies and changed systems of working. Originality/value - The paper is the first to focus on journalistic practice in a converging media environment.

    Abstract

    Abstract
In the field of electronic publishing, encyclopedias represent a unique sort of text for investigating advanced methods of navigation. The user of an electronic excyclopedia normally expects special methods for accessing the entries in an encyclopedia database. Navigation through printed encyclopedias in the traditional sense focuses on the alphabetic order of the entries. In electronic encyclopedias, however, thematic structuring of lemmas and, of course, extensive (hyper-) linking mechanisms have been added. This paper will focus on showing developments, which go beyond these navigational strucutres. We will concentrate on the semantic space formed by lemmas to build a network of semantic distances and thematic trails through the encyclopedia
