    Abstract
Lynch u. R. Daniel Und P. Miller)

    Abstract
Metadata is a key aspect of our evolving infrastructure for information management, social computing, and scientific collaboration. DC-2008 will focus on metadata challenges, solutions, and innovation in initiatives and activities underlying semantic and social applications. Metadata is part of the fabric of social computing, which includes the use of wikis, blogs, and tagging for collaboration and participation. Metadata also underlies the development of semantic applications, and the Semantic Web - the representation and integration of multimedia knowledge structures on the basis of semantic models. These two trends flow together in applications such as Wikipedia, where authors collectively create structured information that can be extracted and used to enhance access to and use of information sources. Recent discussion has focused on how existing bibliographic standards can be expressed as Semantic Web vocabularies to facilitate the ingration of library and cultural heritage data with other types of data. Harnessing the efforts of content providers and end-users to link, tag, edit, and describe their information in interoperable ways ("participatory metadata") is a key step towards providing knowledge environments that are scalable, self-correcting, and evolvable. DC-2008 will explore conceptual and practical issues in the development and deployment of semantic and social applications to meet the needs of specific communities of practice.

    Abstract
This paper introduces the Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) digital library and describes the pedagogical nature of the resources that make up this library for educators. Because resources in this library are stored in the form of metadata records, the utility of the metadata scheme, its elements and its relationships is central to the ability of the library to address the pedagogical needs of instructors in the work domain of the classroom. The analytic framework provided by cognitive work analysis (CWA) is proposed as an innovative approach for evaluating the effectiveness of the JiTT metadata scheme. CWA is also discussed as an approach to assessing the ability of this extensive networked library to create a common digital environment that fosters cooperation and collaboration among instructors.

    Abstract
Metadata provides the human- and machine-accessible gateway to data, improves data to information, and provides the semantic context within which knowledge can be induced from information. Metadata is the means for using together scientific data from heterogeneous sources. A CRIS commonly holds data which, while useful in itself, commonly is also metadata describing more detailed data and information an projects, persons, organizations, products of R&D (patents, products, publications) equipment used for R&D and R&D funding. It is important, therefore, to classify the metadata formats used in various scientific repositories in order to understand their scope and interoperability, and their relationship to CERIF representing CRISs. Metadata formats are reviewed according to intention, abstraction level and technology criteria. The place of CERIF in CRISs in this wider sense (including scientific repositories) is considered and compared with other metadata models and formats. The superiority of CERIF (in formalism and flexibility) is demonstrated.

    Abstract
We describe a science data portal for generic access to scientific data. This data portal is uses a generic science metadata format to catalogue and access science data from a range of disciplines. We describe the metadata format that is used and further discuss how this can be used in combination with library metadata formats, such as the Dublin Core, to access all the outputs of scientific projects, both data and publications.

    Abstract
The current library bibliographic infrastructure was constructed in the early days of computers - before the Web, XML, and a variety of other technological advances that now offer new opportunities. General requirements of a modern metadata infrastructure for libraries are identified, including such qualities as versatility, extensibility, granularity, and openness. A new kind of metadata infrastructure is then proposed that exhibits at least some of those qualities. Some key challenges that must be overcome to implement a change of this magnitude are identified.

    Abstract
Metadata schemas tend to be rationally ordered instruments for the categorization of data about information objects. Instantiation has been demonstrated to be a universal phenomenon. Empirical analysis, both positivist and qualitative, has contributed to typologies of the properties of instantiation. This yields a naïve knowledge organization schema of instantiation. Bibliographic, museum, and archival analyses are compared to demonstrate the value of empirical derivation of categories. In this instance categories, once derived, are demonstrated to represent properties yielding typologies. The empirical generation of categories for knowledge organization is demonstrated.

    Abstract
The project CARMEN ("Content Analysis, Retrieval and Metadata: Effective Networking") aimed - among other goals - at improving the expansion of searches in bibliographic databases into Internet searches. We pursued a set of different approaches to the treatment of semantic heterogeneity (meta-data extraction, query translation using statistic relations and Cross-concordances). This paper describes the concepts and implementation of these approaches and the evaluation of the impact for the retrieval result.

    Abstract
Describes an approach to retrieving environmental sciences information on the Internet using metadatabases. an inf-sheet is created in a flat file system for each resource. The contents of theses sheets are structured by different fields which hold different types of information. 2 classes of information can be distinguished: information describing the content of a resource, which is searchable, and information which links to the resources (URL). A rough automated selection is performed, humans analyze the pre selected resources, and a final selection and indexing is carried out. An algorithm which controle the validity of the meta information is implemented. Describes 2 implemented examples, the Register of Ecological Models and the Metadatabase of Internet Resources
