- Abstract
- I report here on a small preparatory study in ontology construction. It explored T-cell depletion, a special issue in bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The target ontology aims at supporting WWW summarizing in BMT. As a result I propose a case-specific research design backed up by thesaurus construction methods and a systematic field research grounding. It integrates domain experts / future users and system developers. At conceptualization and formalization time, the research procedure joins current ontology engineering methods and formats

- Abstract
- The rapid proliferation of computer networks offers unique possibilities for researchers to exchange information, and equally unique challenges for the people who have to realise these possibilities. I will summarise (some will say: caricaturise) the process of obtaining information as a four-step process: (a) knowing what you want, (b) finding the location of the wanted information, (c) obtaining the information itself, and (d) processing the information to a form useful for further purposes, including quality assessment. The classical field of information retrieval has almost exclusively concentrated on (b), while Internet has mainly facilitated (c). I will argue that a new generation of computer tools will facilitate all steps save (a), and perhaps even (a). Key features of these tools are: they possess built-in awareness of scientific content, and they will fuzzify the boundaries between the steps. Key concepts are ontologies (the computer-age successors of thesauri and classification systems), domain-informed natural-language processing, virtual reality, and integration techniques. At the same time, it must be noted that the availability of the needed resources does not keep pace with the other developments. This in part is a problem of funding. I will argue that the development of resources should be considered in the same vein as other infrastructural measures, like the purchase of expensive equipment in the natural sciences

- Abstract
- Concept systems are not only used in the sciences, but also in secondary supporting fields, e.g. in libraries, in documentation, in terminology and increasingly also in knowledge representation. It is suggested that the development of concept systems be based on semantic analysis. Methodical steps are described. The principle of morpho-syntactic composition in semantics will serve as a theoretical basis for the suggested method. The implications and limitations of this principle will be demonstrated

- Abstract
- Im Hinblick auf die Besonderheiten des Wissens wird die Frage nach seinen Ordnungsmöglichkeiten untersucht. Dazu werden die Leitkonzepte des Karlsruher Ansatzes der integrierten Wissensforschung benutzt. Im ersten Teil werden einige ältere Verbindungen von Wissen und Ordnung dargestellt, die auf Weltordnungen durch Wissen, Metaordnungen für Wissen und Funktionsordnungen des Wissens abzielen. Im zweiten Teil werden drei neuere Ordnungsansätze diskutiert und ihre namensgleichen aber höchst inkongruenten `Wissensordnungen' entwirrt: (1) 'Ontologische' Ordnungen von symbolischen (Begriffe, Propositionen u. dgl.) oder materiellen (Bücher, Dokumente etc.) Wissensobjekten als gegenständliche Wissensorganisation der Bestände, Träger, Sorten oder ihrer Eigenschaften. (2) 'Prozedurale' Ordnungen von Operationen und Prozessen als untechnische (heuristische) oder technische (algorithmische) Wissensrepräsentationen der Abläufe, Arbeiten, Verfahren etc. (3) 'Konstitutive' Ordnungen von mehr oder weniger großen Wissensfeldern durch ordnungspolitische Leitbestimmungen und empirische Randbedingungen als einrahmende Wissensordnungen (im engeren juristischen Sinn: Regulationen; bei einseitiger Dominanz: Wissensregime). Abschließend geht es kurz um die Frage, ob überhaupt, was davon und wie man Wissen organisieren, repräsentieren oder ordnen kann. - Abstract
- In this paper we continue our investigation of the micro-structure of the Matthew effect for countries (MEC). After the recent identification of a new type of scientific journal, the Matthew core journal (MCJ), we study the relations of MCJ to other types of core journals - publication, citation, and participation core journals. 144 MCJ out of 2712 SCI-journals in our sample account for half of the MEC. A typology of the MCJ can be established. The exclusive role of the MCJ consists in carrying a high number of Matthew citations due to the competition of many countries for a high impact of their papers. The research fronts in science are "boiling" in the MCJ. The 144 MCJ are sufficient to construct a country rank distribution that reflects world science performance
