Übers. d. Titels: When ISAD-G meets the Internet
    Footnote
Account of the experience of the City of Geneva archives in using International Standard Archive Description - General (USAD-G) and making the resultant catalogue available on the Internet. The archives, initiated in 1986, comprise some 100 lots: 2 part-time staff took 10 months to complete the project. ISAD-G fields requiring research to complete were not fully treated. Internet availability offers ease of update, and feedback can be used for further refinement. At present Swiss institutions largely ignore both ISAD-G and the Internet

    Abstract
Discusses the possibilities and difficulties encountered when using a thematic index to search contemporary art databanks. Jaconde and Videomuseum, 2 French databanks, are used as examples. the core problems found in the study are the methods and limits of indexing in both systems. A thematic index should be developed that is better adapted to 20th century art, based on the complementary and reciprocal relationship between text and image, and which fully exploits hypertext

    Abstract
An article in documentaliste 35(1998) no.1, presented the concept and contexts for the application of records management. This article, devoted to the experience of archivists, continues to focus on professional active and semi-active records management practices and their evolution in different countries and eras. P. Barbat analyzes the discovery in France in the 1960s of active records and the invlovement of both archivists and the departments actually generating the records in their management, and the impact this development has had on archival practices. Also discusses the impact that the international standard now being drafted by ISO will have on the profession. A government and a company archivist also describe their experience

    Abstract
Users who want to exploit all the information sources on the Web will need an efficient search and selection tool e.g. a directory or search engine. Directories list Web sites and analyze their contents. Describes the behind-the-scenes work of documentalists specialized in surfing, tracking and indexing French language sites for the directory Nomade. Describes the creation of Nomade, its functioning and indexing, and how this new profession of 'cyber-documentalist' is changing the practices and functions of information professionals as they become Internet information organizers

    Abstract
Report of a study comparing 2 methods of indexing: LEXINET, a computerised system for indexing titles and summaries only; and manual indexing of full texts, using the thesaurus developed by French Electricity (EDF). Both systems were applied to a collection of approximately 2.000 documents on artifical intelligence from the EDF data base. The results were then analysed to compare quantitative performance (number and range of terms) and qualitative performance (ambiguity of terms, specificity, variability, consistency). Overall, neither system proved ideal: LEXINET was deficient as regards lack of accessibility and excessive ambiguity; while the manual system gave rise to an over-wide variation of terms. The ideal system would appear to be a combination of automatic and manual systems, on the evidence produced here.

    Abstract
Outlines the Bibliotheca universalis project, launched in Feb 94 at the G7 conference in Brussels, which aims to create a union catalogue of digitized documents available on participating libraries' servers. Surveys digitization in a number of libraries in France and describes initiatives in North America and Japan. Emphasizes the necessity for cooperation in ensuring the success of the project

    Abstract
Demonstrates how the efficiency of online searching can be increased the application of conceptual logic; which consists of making systematically explicit all the notional, semantic, and cognitive elements contained in the subject to be searched. Unlike a thesaurus, which has been designed for the most probable, multiple uses, conceptual logic makes it possible to access information through means fully adapted to specific uses. Examples are presented from the TOPIC information retrieval software

    Abstract
A discussion of developments to date in the field of computerized indexing, based on presentations given at a seminar held at the Institute of Policy Studies in Paris in Nov 91. The methods tested so far, based on a linguistic approach, whether using natural language or special thesauri, encounter the same central problem - they are only successful when applied to collections of similar types of documents covering very specific subject areas. Despite this, the search for some sort of universal indexing metalanguage continues. In the end, computerized indexing works best when used in conjunction with manual indexing - ideally in the hands of a trained library science professional, who can extract the maximum value from a collection of documents for a particular user population

    Abstract
The retroconversion programme of municipal library catalogues, part of a project of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, is entering its final phase. The heritage and local collections catalogues of 26 libraries have been converted. The final stage of data capture for the catalogues of 30 more libraries began in Feb 96. While it is too early to take stock of the process, the retroconversion has shown the variety, abundance and uniqeness of the collections and modernization leads professionals to a radically different approach to the access to these materials

    Abstract
Until the 1980s, the handling of documentary information in business was usually split up among 4 unrelated independent departments: the library; archives; secretarial services; and reproduction/printing. The introduction of new technology allows the integration of these operations into a single system; comprising subsystems for: production of internal documents; acquisition and storage of external documents; information retrieval; archive creation and maintenance; and circulation of information between departments, based on local computer networks. In reality, not many businesses are making use of technology available to set up such integrated systems because of the lack of common standards for equipment and software, which makes internal and external communication unreliable. This problem may be resolved in the near future, as a result of discussions now in progress at international level.

    Abstract
If the current means of communication are considered to be essential tools for a democracy then it is a very different understanding of democracy to that of the ancient Greeks and claims that the information highways are not factors of democratization because they favour only those who have access to them. Emphasizes however that the Internet represents an enormous opportunity for librarians that they ignore at their peril in that it offers flexibility, instantaneity, affordability and knows no boundaries. Recommends that librarians and information specialists leran how communications technology can serve them while emphasizing that the information they require is frequently to be found in their own collections
