- Ways of classifying adult fiction vary from library to library in the absence of a standard or universal system. Describes a questionnaire survey of 67 libraries which attempted to identify the various method used by libraries in classifying, arranging and displaying their adult fiction collections. Stresses the need for an evaluation of the methods used and to explore user needs, genre categories, and techniques used by bookstores

- Abstract
- This study explores ways to assist users who are primarily interested in finding a good story, regardless of format or literary form. The emphasis is on materials classed in the Arts (700s) and Literature (800s) in the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. Features from two prototypes, FictionFinder and DeweyBrowser, are being combined to attempt to assist users in finding terms to input while providing a holistic approach to finding works with imaginary content.

- Abstract
- Die ASB hat Zuwachs bekommen! Lange ging die Arbeitsgruppe 'ASB-Überarbeitung' mit der Idee schwanger, die Hauptgruppenfamilie zu vergrößern. Auf der 16. Sitzung erblickte nun 'Z' das Licht der (ASB-)Welt! Im folgenden weitere Informationen über die Zusammenkunft der Arbeitsgruppe, die vom 3. bis 5. Dezember '98 in der Stadtbücherei Stuttgart stattfand. Schwerpunkte der Sitzung waren die Hauptgruppen R,S,U und V. Darüber hinaus konnten die Gliederungsentwürfe für die Hautpgruppen G, M und Y endgültig abgeschlossen werden. Einige Entscheidungen aus vorangegangenen Beratungsrunden wurden modifiziert - ein Beleg für die Dynamik des Überarbeitungsprozesses und das ungebrochene Engagement aller Beteiligten! - Abstract
- Because classification of fiction has posed a dilemma for librarians for many years, the author conducted a survey of the classification practices of larger llibrary systems in the United States. The majority of libraries physically separate adult fiction from adult nonfiction. A large percentage of libraries use genre categorization to arrange a part of their fiction collection. The author concludes: "We now know what we are doing, but are we sure of the whys?"

- Abstract
- Despite the popularity of fiction in libraries, little has been done to analyse systematically the criteria that fiction readers use when selecting books. Describes and evaluates several fiction sclassification systems from the perspective of how well they answer likely reader queries regarding the subject of a novel. Examines the 2-faceted 'levels-of-access' concept that is the common point of reference in all comparisons. Discusses classification schemes in terms of theri utility for browsing, subject headings for card catalogues, and printed indexes. Also discusses the provision of multifaceted subject access through on-line fiction cataloguing. Suggests further investigation of levels of access

- Abstract
- This chapter considers fiction retrieval research and initiatives, providing an overview of some of the approaches that have been developed. In particular, it describes two recent approaches to fiction retrieval that have made use of theoretical concepts drawn from literary theory. Fiction is an interesting information domain because it includes documents that serve two purposes, which are reading for pleasure and scholarly study (Beghtol, 1994), but fiction retrieval has not always focused on both aspects. In the 19th century, the approach was to treat fiction from a knowledge perspective within general classification schemes. The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) contain classes for literature, with the main subdivision in each case being the language in which it is written. Further subdivision is possible based on literary form, historical period or the works of an individual author (Riesthuis, 1997).
