- Abstract
- In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden 4 Abfrageoberflächen unterschiedlicher Retrievalsysteme, die für die Mitarbeiter des Umweltbundesamtes Berlin zugänglich sind, im Hinblick auf Nutzerfreundlichkeit und intuitiver Bedienbarkeit vergleichend untersucht. Der 'Einfachdialog' und die Oberfläche der 'Umwelt-CD' greifen auf die Datenbestände der Umweltdatenbanken zu. Berücksichtigt werden hierbei die Oberflächen zur Recherche in ULIDAT und UFORDAT. Das Metadatensystem UDK (Umweltdatenkatalog) wird in der PC-Version, dem 'UDK-UBA', und in der WWW-Variante in die Untersuchung einbezogen

- Abstract
- Bevor Informationsangebot und inhaltliche Struktur des Deutschen Bildungsservers (DBS) anhand der wichtigsten Features dieses "nationalen Webportals" zum deutschen Bildungswesen konkreter erläutert werden, einige Hintergrunddaten zur Entstehungsgeschichte, zum bildungspolitischen Kontext und zu dem den DBS tragenden Kooperationsverbund. Das seinerzeit durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) geförderte Pilotprojekt Deutscher Bildungsserver wurde seit August 1996 an der Abteilung Pädagogik und Informatik der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) entwickelt. Mit der im Oktober 1999 erfolgten Einrichtung einer zentralen Geschäftsstelle am Deutschen Institut für Internationale pädagogische Forschung (DIPF) in Frankfurt a. M. ist der DBS in das Stadium kontinuierlicher institutioneller Förderung eingetreten. Ein Steuerungsgremium aus Vertretern des Bundes und der Länder sowie Sachverständigen begleitet die weitere Entwicklung des Projektes. Die Geschäftsstelle am DIPF, zuständig für die Gesamtkoordination und fünf der momentan sechs zentralen Redaktionsbereiche, kooperiert eng mit der Abteilung Pädagogik und Informatik der HU, der weiterhin die technische Betreuung und Weiterentwicklung des Servers obliegt, sowie dem in München ansässigen Institut für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht (FWU), das redaktionell verantwortlich zeichnet für das Themengebiet Schule sowie für das dem DBS assoziierte Bildungsportal Schulweb

- Abstract
- Der vorliegende Artikel fasst die Hauptaussagen einer Seminararbeit zusammen, die an der Fachhochschule Köln, Institut für Informationswissenschaft im Rahmen des weiterführenden Master-Studiengangs "Library and Information Science" (M.L.I.S.) entstanden ist. Neben den wichtigsten Typen von Fachinformationsmitteln aus den Bereichen Geographie und Geowissenschaften werden das methodische Vorgehen im Rahmen der Evaluation der Informationsmittel erläutert sowie die Untersuchungsergebnisse exemplarisch anhand dreier Datenbanken vorgestellt.

- "Für die "Brockhaus Enzyklopädie digital", zu der das Fraunhofer-Institut IPSI in Darmstadt wesentliche technologische Beiträge geleistet hat, erhielt der Verlag Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG (Mannheim) am 21. Mai den AKEP Award 2006. Damit zeichnet der Arbeitskreis Elektronisches Publizieren (AKEP) des VerlegerAusschusses im Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels die innovativsten elektronischen Entwicklungen in Verlagen aus. "Die 'Brockhaus Enzyklopaedie digital' hebt sich von den anderen nominierten Produkten wesentlich ab und bietet durch das Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Informationen neue Perspektiven auf die Welt und das Wissen", begründete Arnoud de Kemp, Jury-Sprecher und Sprecher des AKEP, die Entscheidung. Das Nachschlagewerk übertreffe alle bisher erhältlichen CD-ROM- und DVD-Enzyklopädien an Umfang und Funktionalitäten. Besonders beeindruckt hat die Jury die unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten, wie man nach Wissen suchen kann. So reagiert die Suchmaschine auf die Eingabe komplexer Fragesätze (natürlichsprachliche Suchhilfe) und stellt im dreidimensionalen Wissensraum assoziative Zusammenhänge dar. Zudem haben etliche Objekte in diesem 3D-Wissensraum ein Kontextmenü, das sie mit gleichartigen, über- oder untergeordneten anderen Objekten in Beziehung setzt. Weit über die bisher bekannten Möglichkeiten digitaler Nachschlagewerke hinaus geht nach Ansicht der Jury auch die Verknüpfung von Artikeln mit multimedialen Elementen. Die Aufgabe des Fraunhofer IPSI in diesem Projekt war es, eine Taxonomie der Lexikoneinträge zu erstellen, die die Wissensvernetzung ermöglicht. Die "Brockhaus Enzyklopädie digital" besteht aus einem USB-Stick, der alle Texte der 30-bändigen gedruckten Enzyklopädie und die notwendige Software mit allen Suchtechnologien enthält. Die Software auf dem USB-Stick ist unter MS Windows auch ohne vorangehende Installation nutzbar. Ergänzt wird das Werk durch ein OnlinePortal, welches die Inhalte weltweit betriebsunabhängig abrufbar macht. Auch 2005 war das Fraunhofer IPSI, damals mit seiner Technologie für digitale Wasserzeichen, an zwei Preisen des AKEP beteiligt."

- Wer schnell wissenschaftliche Informationen zu Hause. auf seinem PC benötigt, kann, künftig bei www.vascoda.de fündig werden: Unter dieser Internet-Adresse. haben 37 deutsche Bibliotheken, Forschungsinstitute und Informationseinrichtungen ein fächerübergreifendes Internetportal eingerichtet. Angeschlossen sind auch das Deutsche Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung in Frankfurt und das Institut für Soziologie der TU Darmstadt.

- "Wissenschaftler brauchen fundierte Informationen aus Quellen, auf die man sich verlassen kann. Die Suche nach solchen Quellen, wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen, Dissertationen, Büchern, Datenbanken und Linklisten gestaltete sich bislang schwierig: Bibliotheken oder Verlage von Fachzeitschriften mussten einzeln angesteuert werden, einen zentralen, einheitlichen und einfachen Zugang gab es bislang, nicht. Das soll sich jetzt ändern: Das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und von der Deutschen; Forschungsgemeinsehaft (DFG) geförderte Internetportal "vascoda", das nach dem Willen seiner Initiatoren auch Grundbaustein für die "Digitale Bibliothek Deutschland" sein soll, will Forschern Zugang zu wissenschaftlicher Information unterschiedlichster Fachrichtungen und unterschiedlichster Formate bieten. Das ist bundesweit in dieser Form ebenso einzigartig wie die Tatsache, dass die an vascoda angeschlossenen Datenbanken ausschließlich ;,geprüfte" Informationen liefern sollen: "Fachbibliothekare und Fachwissenschaftler der Anbieter, die sich unter dem vascoda-Dach zusammengeschlossen haben, prüfen, welche Texte vdrfügbar gemacht werden", sagt Christine Burblies von der vascoda-Geschäftsstelle in Hannover. "So können wir gewährleisten, dass die Informationen wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügen." Das macht dann auch den wesentlichen Unterschied zu anderen Suchmaschinen aus: Die Suchmaske des Wissenschaftsportals ist zwar ähnlich einfach zu handhaben wie die Internet-Suchmaschine Google - vascoda verirrt sich aber nicht im World Wide Web. Und während andere Internet-Suchmaschinen nicht den Zugriff auf das so genannte "invisible web" bieten, also beispielsweise auf Bibliothekskataloge, ermöglicht vascoda auch den Zugriff auf dieses unsichtbare Netz. Das Wissenschaftsportal ist unentgeltlich nutzbar, und auch ein Großteil der Informationen ist kostenlos zu beziehen. Es sind aber auch kostenpflichtige Informationen verfügbar - zum Beispiel aus Verlagsangeboten und kommerziellen Datenbanken. Wer Informationen etwa zu soziologischen Fragen sucht, landet sicher auch auf den Internetseiten des Instituts für Soziologie in Darmstadt (www.ifs.tu-darmstadt.de/forsch.htm), das ebenso zu den vascoda-Anbietern gehört wie das Deutsche Institut für Internationale Pädagogik (DIPF) in Frankfurt (www.dipfde/index_1024.htm). In vascoda eingebunden sind zur Zeit 23 virtuelle Fachbibliotheken (ViFas), die vier großen Informationsverbünde EconDoc (Wirtschaft), GetInfo (Naturwissenschaften und Technik), infoconnex (Pädagogik, Sozialwissenschaften, Psychologie) und Medizin sowie die Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB), ein kooperativer Service von 209 Bibliotheken zur Bereitstellung von elektronischen Zeitschriften, -die im Internet publiziert werden. "Wir planen überdies die Erweiterung um das Fach Germanistik, und wenn es soweit ist, wird die Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt diesen Service bereitstellen", sagt Burblies."
