- Abstract
- Die Kenntnis der Regeln für die Aufnahme und Ordnung von Titeln ist eine der grundlegenden Voraussetzungen, die man von jedem erwartet, der Büchersammlungen verwaltet, Bibliographien zusammenstellt oder sonstige Dokumentationsarbeit leistet. Im Laufe der praktischen und theoretischen Ausbildung muß sich der angehende Bibliothekar mit der Katalogisierung, insbesondere mit der Verzeichnung von Titeln für den sogenannten Alphabetischen Katalog, vertraut machen. Dieses Lehrbuch soll bei der alphabetischen Katalogisierung allen denen eine Hilfe sein, die wenige oder nur oberflächliche Vorkenntnisse aufweisen. Vor allem möchte es aber den in der Ausbildung begriffenen Lehrlingen, Fachschülern und künftigen wissenschaftlichen Bibliothekaren für den Anfang eine feste Grundlage in der Titelaufnahme vermitteln.

- "Unter dem Thema "Ist Deutschland reif für die internationale Zusammenarbeit?" fand am 11. September 2001 in Göttingen anlässlich der 5. Verbundkonferenz des GBV eine Podiumsdiskussion statt. Der Autor dieses Beitrages berichtet über Eindrücke, die er aus dieser Diskussion gewann. Auf dem Podium waren einige maßgebliche und einflussreiche Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare aus deutschen Bibliotheken und bibliothekarischen Einrichtungen sowie ein Gast vereinigt, die zugleich auch in mehreren für das deutsche Bibliothekswesen maßgeblichen Gremien oder Organisationen mitarbeiten. Es waren dies: Rainer Diedrichs, Leiter der Verbundzentrale des GBV, Ute Schwens, Stellvertreterin der Generaldirektorin der Deutschen Bibliothek, Dr. Ewald Brahms, Geschäftsstelle der DFG, Berndt Dugall, Leiter der Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt /M. als Moderator, Look Costers, Direktor von PICA, Dr. Hermann Leskien, Generaldirektor der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek und Heinz-Werner Hoffmann, Leiter des HBZ. Neben einigen weniger bedeutenden Themen stand vor allem die Frage im Mittelpunkt, ob sich Deutschland von den nationalen Erschließungsstandards verabschieden und den internationalen, also AACR2 und MARC, anschließen solle. Die Diskussion ergab eigentlich gar keine kontroversen Ansichten und verlief etwa in vier Schritten: 1."Alle auf dem Podium bestätigten, dass sie persönlich für einen Wechsel seien. 2."Es wurden einige Probleme genannt, die einem Kurswechsel entgegen stehen könnten. Dazu gehörten: Die Podiumsteilnehmer könnten nicht für die Gremien sprechen, deren Mitglieder sie seien. Man müsse einen bundesweiten Konsens mit allen Bibliotheken herbei führen. Es ständen der Abkehr von den deutschen Standards vor allem Abteilungsleiter und Katalogspezialisten entgegen. Die deutschen Standards beruhten auf spezifisch deutschen Eigenheiten (wobei offen blieb, ob die Benutzer oder die Bibliothekare gemeint waren). 3."Es wurde unter den Podiumsteilnehmern ein Freiwilliger gesucht, der in seinem Verantwortungsbereich einmal versuchen könne, die Veränderung der Standards erfolgreich zu diskutieren. Es fand sich allerdings kein Freiwilliger. 4. Es wurde die "Harmonisierung" der deutschen und der internationalen Standards als Lösung vorgeschlagen, wobei offen blieb, was "Harmonisierung" bedeuten könnte. 5. Ergebnis der Podiumsdiskussion: Es ist alles sehr schwierig und kompliziert und man sollte maI drüber reden". Der Autor als Zuhörer im Publikum der Podiumsdiskussion möchte nun den Podiumsteilnehmern und allen, die es angeht, einen Vorschlag unterbreiten, wie wir in den deutschen Bibliotheken weiter kommen könnten. 1. Die maßgeblichen Gremien (dazu zähle ich vor allem: die AG der Verbundsysteme, den Standardisierungsausschuss, die DFG) fassen einen gemeinsamen Beschluss, dass ab sofort an den deutschen Standards nicht mehr weiter gearbeitet wird. Der Beschluss soll deshalb gemeinsam gefasst werden, damit nicht ein einzelnes Gremium oder einzelne Personen, die unter den Druck ihrer Klientel geraten, ins Wanken kommen können, sondern einen Rückhalt haben. 2. Alle Einwände gegen diesen Beschluss können innerhalb eines Jahres schriftlich und mit Begründung bei einer noch zu benennenden Stelle eingereicht werden. Diese Stelle sammelt die Einwände, ordnet sie nach Themen und lässt sie ein Jahr lang inhaltlich unbearbeitet liegen. Nach Ablauf eines Jahres werden die Einwände diskutiert. 3. Die unter Ziffer 1) genannten Gremien erläutern ihrer Klientel ein Jahr lang die Vorteile eines Umschwenkens auf die internationalen Standards. Fachleute aus dem Ausland sind hinzu zu ziehen. 4. Die genannten Gremien legen eine Zeitspanne fest, innerhalb derer die deutschen Bibliotheken die Standards wechseln. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass die deutschen Bibliotheken und ihre Mitarbeiter auf einen solchen richtungsweisenden Beschluss warten. Er ist überfällig. Ein Wechsel wird Aufwand und Probleme in den Bibliotheken verursachen. Dies ist aber kein Argument dagegen, denn Bibliothekare müssen in längeren Zeiträumen denken als wenige Jahren in die Zukunft. Der Anschluss an die internationale Bibliotheksgemeinschaft ist wichtiger als die temporären Schwierigkeiten."

- Abstract
- Libraries may vary in the level and fullness of cataloging they give to video recordings and in the methods they use to provide access to them. This paper reports the results of a survey exploring the level of cataloging and access methods applied to videos, the degree to which catalogers view screen credits, and how often various credit information is included and used to create access points in catalog records in selected U. S. public and Association of Research Libraries member libraries. Resources for cataloging videos also were examined. Results showed that most libraries cataloged videos at the full level and provided access points to similar types of information in catalog records. Academic librarians reported viewing videos and providing access points to certain information to a greater extent than public librarians did. This study offers a general picture of the credit information libraries include or omit in video catalog records.

- Abstract
- "Libraries: Tools for Education and Development" war das Motto der 70. IFLA-Generalkonferenz, dem Weltkongress Bibliothek und Information, der vom 22.-27. August 2004 in Buenos Aires, Argentinien, und damit erstmals in Lateinamerika stattfand. Rund 3.000 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, davon ein Drittel aus spanischsprachigen Ländern, allein 600 aus Argentinien, besuchten die von der IFLA und dem nationalen Organisationskomitee gut organisierte Tagung mit mehr als 200 Sitzungen und Veranstaltungen. Aus Deutschland waren laut Teilnehmerverzeichnis leider nur 45 Kolleginnen und Kollegen angereist, womit ihre Zahl wieder auf das Niveau von Boston gesunken ist. Erfreulicherweise gab es nunmehr bereits im dritten Jahr eine deutschsprachige Ausgabe des IFLA-Express. Auch in diesem Jahr soll hier über die Veranstaltungen der Division IV Bibliographic Control berichtet werden. Die Arbeit der Division mit ihren Sektionen Bibliography, Cataloguing, Classification and Indexing sowie der neuen Sektion Knowledge Management bildet einen der Schwerpunkte der IFLA-Arbeit, die dabei erzielten konkreten Ergebnisse und Empfehlungen haben maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die tägliche Arbeit der Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare. Erstmals wird auch ausführlich über die Arbeit der Core Activities ICABS und UNIMARC und der Information Technology Section berichtet.

- Cataloguing Section (Sektion Katalogisierung) Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit dieser Sektion liegt auf der Erarbeitung bzw. internationalen Harmonisierung von Strukturen, Regeln und Arbeitsverfahren mit dem Ziel, die internationale Kooperation im Katalogisierungsbereich zu verbessern. In Anbetracht des laufenden Evaluierungsprozesses wurde der Strategieplan der Sektion zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt nur dort aktualisiert, wo es unbedingt erforderlich war. Neue Ziele wurden nicht aufgenommen. Oberste Priorität bei den strategischen Zielen behielt die Entwicklung internationaler Katalogisierungsstandards für die bibliographische Beschreibung und den Zugriff. In ihrer zentralen Bedeutung bestätigt wurden auch die "Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records" (FRBR). Darüber hinaus gehört auch in Zukunft die Weiterentwicklung und Revision der ISBDs zu den zentralen Anliegen der Arbeit der Sektion Katalogisierung. Ein weiteres vorrangiges Ziel bleibt die Erarbeitung von Standards, Regeln und Informationslisten, um den Zugang zu bibliographischen Daten in allen Sprachen zu ermöglichen. Hierzu zählen u. a.: - die vollständige Veröffentlichung der Anonymous Classics: Der Teil für europäische Literatur ist inzwischen veröffentlicht'. Für die Erarbeitung weiterer Teile (Lateinamerika, Afrika und Asien) soll das Verfahren gestrafft und ein Zeitplan erstellt werden. - die Beobachtung der Aktivitäten zu Unicode und die Information der Sektionsmitglieder darüber zur Förderung des mehrsprachigen Zugangs zu bibliographischer Information - die Entwicklung eines web-basierten multilingualen Wörterbuchs für Katalogisierungsbegriffe - die Entwicklung und der Test von (Daten-)Modellen für eine virtuelle internationale Normdatei - die Überarbeitung der "IFLA Names of persons". Das Open Programme der Sektion stand in diesem Jahr unter dem Motto "Developments in Cataloguing Guidelines" und wurde von Barbara Tillett, Lynne Howarth und Carol van Nuys bestritten. Lynne Howarth ging in ihrem Vortrag "Enabling metadata: creating a core record for resource discovery" auf die Reaktionen im weltweiten Stellungnahmeverfahren auf die Veröffentlichung des Papiers "Guidance an the Structure, Content and Application of Metadata Records for digital resources and collections" der Working Group an the Use of Metadata Schemes ein. Carol van Nuys stellte das norwegische "Paradigma Project and its quest for metadata solutions and services" vor.
