Abstract

Ziel aller professioneller Aktivitäten der in der DGI organisierten Informationsfachleute ist es, bedarfsgerecht die Verfügbarkeit von Informationen sicher zu stellen. Als Motto der 60.Jahrestagung und 30. Online-Tagung der DGI bietet diese Zielsetzung den Rahmen für ein vielseitiges Programm, das Information Professionals aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln interessante Einblicke in informationswissenschaftliche Forschung, praktische Anwendungen, das Berufsfeld, die Ausbildungssituation und geplante Projekte bietet. Dabei begleiten uns die zentralen Fragen, unter welchen Bedingungen eine Information für wen heute verfügbar ist, wie sich die Verfügbarkeit auch bei sich wandelnden Technologien und Rezeptionsgewohnheiten für die Zukunft sichern lässt und die alte, doch immer wieder neue Frage nach der 'Dokumentationswürdigkeit' aufgrund von Qualität oder betrieblichen Notwendigkeiten und juristischen Regelungen. Der Band vereinigt die Textfassungen der Beiträge, die durch das Progammkomitee angenommen worden sind, dazu gehören u.a. die suche nach Bildern oder Patenten mit Suchmaschinen, Competitive Intelligence, Sicherung von Primärdaten, Langfristige Nutzbarkeit und Standardisierung, Qualitätskriterien, automatische und intellektuelle Erschließung, Ontologien oder Erfahrungen mit dem Einsatz von Wikis.

Abstract

"British Librarianship and Information Work 1986-1990" continues a series which has run for more than 60 years. It began, in 1928 as the annual "Year's Work in Librarianship", changed from 1951 to "Five Years' Work in Librarianship" and, with the volume for 1966-1970, took on its present title. The series has established itself as an important record of professional activity and thought, through its comprehensive reviews of most aspects of information and library work. It is valuable to those who wish to keep up to date professionally, noting current developments and trends. It will be equally useful for those researchers and students who in the future need to look back historically on the events and achivements of each quinquennium. This issue follows closely the contents and style of its immediate predecessor "British librarianship and information Work 1981-1985", being in two volumes, one covering general libraries and the library information profession, and the other being concerned with special libraries, materials and processes. All the topics in the previous volume are included, except for the chapter on Buildings and Equipment, the contents of which have been incorporated into other chapters. All the contributors were asked to describe the last five years' major events and publications in their fields, and, generally, to limit their contributions to about 7,500 words, with no restriction on the number of bibliographical references. All authors were requested to tackle their subjects thoroughly while conforming to their own personal and individual styles. No attempt has been made to impose an overall editorial style, or to avoid the duplication which results from writers covering specific, but inevitably overlapping, areas of interest. Cross references have not been inserted in the text from chapter to chapter, where duplication occurs, but a detailed subject index provides for readers wishing to approach the review with an interest in any specific area or topic. A separate list of acronyms and abbreviations appears in each volume, representing all such entries identified in both volumes.

Abstract

This book features theoretical and practical perspectives from a range of disciplines on the challenges of using digital media in interpretation and representation of cultural heritage. In "Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage", experts offer a critical and theoretical appraisal of the uses of digital media by cultural heritage institutions. Previous discussions of cultural heritage and digital technology have left the subject largely unmapped in terms of critical theory. The essays in this volume offer this long-missing perspective on the challenges of using digital media in the research, preservation, management, interpretation, and representation of cultural heritage. The contributors - scholars and practitioners from a range of relevant disciplines - ground theory in practice, considering how digital technology might be used to transform institutional cultures, methods, and relationships with audiences. The contributors examine the relationship between material and digital objects in collections of art and indigenous artefacts; the implications of digital technology for knowledge creation, documentation, and the concept of authority; and the possibilities for "virtual cultural heritage" - the preservation and interpretation of cultural and natural heritage through real-time, immersive, and interactive techniques. The major strength of Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage: A Critical Discourse is the balance of theory and practice achieved by its authors through the inclusion of discussion on digital culture exhibits and programs. By describing the work being done at diverse cultural institutions life is given to theoretical discussions. By relating theory to practice, the work becomes accessible to a broader range of readers. Further, these essays provide many examples of how libraries and museums could partner with each other in the realm of digital culture. The field of museum studies is dealing with the same issues as information and library science with regards to data organization, user behavior, object classification, and documentation schemas. Also, the emphasis on the users of digital cultural heritage and how individuals make meaningful connections with art, history, and geography is another asset of the book. Each chapter is well researched resulting in helpful and extensive bibliographies on various aspects of digital culture. Overall, the work is rich in discussion, description and illustrative examples that cover the subject of digital cultural heritage in terms of depth and breadth. The primary weakness of the title is on the focus on museum studies in the discourse on digital cultural heritage. There is much to be shared and discovered across other cultural institutions such as libraries and local historical societies and a more interdisciplinary approach to the essays included would have captured this. The overwhelming emphasis on museums, unfortunately, may cause some researching and studying digital cultural heritage from another perspective to overlook this work; thereby further dividing the efforts and communication of knowledge in this area. This work is highly recommended for collections on museum studies, cultural heritage, art history and documentation, library and information science, and archival science. This work would be most useful to educators and researchers interested in a theoretical understanding of cultural institutions and user interactions in view of the social and political impact of the evolving digital state of cultural heritage rather than in the specific technologies and specific user studies on the digital cultural heritage. Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage is an insightful work that will encourage further discourse and research."

Abstract

Hochwertige Informationen und schnelle Wissensvermittlung - diese Voraussetzungen lebenslangen Lernens sind in unserer Gesellschaft unverzichtbar. Den Bibliotheken kommt die unverzichtbare Rolle des Managers und Anbieters analoger und digitaler Medien zu; keine andere öffentliche Institution leistet diese Arbeit der Bereitstellung, Strukturierung, Vermittlung und Archivierung von Information. In Deutschland fehlt es bisher allerdings an einer vorausschauenden Bibliothekspolitik und -planung. Mangelnde Kooperation, unbefriedigender Einsatz von Ressourcen, fehlende Innovation und Flexibilität sind die Folgen. Auf der Basis einer Ist-Analyse der Situation der deutschen Bibliotheken und einer internationalen Best-Practice-Recherche in Ländern mit vorbildlicher nationaler Bibliotheksentwicklung haben die Kooperationspartner Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Bibliotheksverbände e.V. (BDB) und Bertelsmann Stiftung in ihrem gemeinsamen Projekt »Bibliothek 2007« eine Empfehlung für die zukünftige Gestaltung des Bibliothekswesens in Deutschland erarbeitet. Ziel ist, damit einen übergreifenden Strategieprozess auf Bundes-, Landes- und kommunaler Ebene zu initiieren.

"Deutschland ist eine Wissensgesellschaft. Wissen und Information sind Schlüsselfaktoren für wirtschaftlichen Wohlstand und internationale Anschlussfähigkeit. Erzeugung, Verbreitung und Nutzung von Wissen bilden eine Kette der Innovation und Wertschöpfung, die wie jede Kette nur so gut ist wie ihr schwächstes Glied. Wie der Standort Deutschland diese Prozesse organisiert, entscheidet über seine Wettbewerbsfähigkeit nach außen ebenso wie über seine Chancengleichheit nach innen - mit Wirkung auf die Zahl der Patent-Anmeldungen und Nobelpreise ebenso wie auf die Zahl der Bildungskarrieren in den so genannten bildungsfernen Milieus. Die gezielte Förderung und Vermittlung von Lern- und Lesekompetenz, also der Fähigkeit zur Aneignung von Wissen ist dabei ebenso ein Faktor wie der produktive Wettbewerb in Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen zur Erzeugung neuen Wissens und seiner Anwendungen. Wissen lebt von Informationen und deren Austausch. Bibliotheken sind bereits heute Informations- und Wissensmanager auf allen Stufen der individuellen Bildungsbiographie - sie unterstützen im Kindesalter als öffentliche Bibliothek oder Schulbibliothek die Lesekompetenz und die kindliche Neugier, sie bilden als wissenschaftliche Bibliothek oder Spezialbibliothek eine wichtige Ressource für Forschung und Lehre. In ihrer Gesamtheit unterstützen und begleiten sie das lebenslange Lernen durch Angebote, die von der Bereitstellung von Literatur und elektronischen Medien bis hin zur Vermittlung von Fachinformationen via Internet und Datenbanken reichen. Die Vielfalt von verfügbaren Informationen in der heutigen Gesellschaft ist eine Chance, aber die schiere Menge an Informationen auch ein Hemmnis - nicht umsonst spricht man von »Informationsflut«. Das gezielte Auffinden, die stichhaltige Bewertung und die kompetente Vermittlung von Informationen verlangen Profis, gerade in den Zeiten von Google und Yahoo mit ihren unzähligen Verweisen - gerade in den Zeiten von jährlich 8o ooo Neuerscheinungen auf dem Buchmarkt. Qualität, Aktualität und Zuverlässigkeit von Informationen erkennen zu können verlangt Erfahrung und Expertise. Bibliotheken verfügen über diese Professionalität - Informationsmanagement ist ihr eigentliches Metier.
