    Abstract
Presents a state of the art review of the application oh hypertext searching techniques to online catalogues. The technique improves traditional online catalogues: when consulting the catalogue in a non linear way; and when browsing bibliographic information. New research could improve access to larger databases including thesauri and classification schemes

    Abstract
Contrasts the abundance of research work into online public access catalogues in the Anglo-Saxon world with the situation in France, where this theme is practically absent. Describes the research project: OPAC-Parinfo (Programme d'aidé à la récherche en information)

    Abstract
The National Library of France (BNF) database, BN-OPALINE, initially developed for computerising the specialised departments' catalogues, has functioned since 1996 as the database for all BNF documents. Accessible on the Internet, notices are in INTERMARC format, with over 500.000 references covering specialised documents, microforms and documents acquired by partner libraries. Eventually BNF-OPALINE will be integrated into the future BNF multimedia information system and form part of the French joint catalogue

    Abstract
The media centre at the City of Science and Industry, Paris, bases cataloguing practices on user habits, simulating searches which users have done to identify how access can be improved. In relation to the audiovisual viewer, which offers a selection of 3.500 films, this has led to including summaries and closer indexing, so that items can be retrieved by subject, not just by title as in the general catalogue. Economy of indexing can be justified as long as there is more information available from another resource. Analysis of failed searches has shown that wider subject indexing and integration of subject research and keywords would reduce noise. In the same way that physical layout and presentation of collections can help users, so should catalogue structure and organisation
