    Abstract

    Abstract

Reports on a recent review of the literature of 'information behaviour' as it is studied in a variety of disciplines, other than information science. As a result of the review, identifies areas of research interest to information science and proposes a general model information behaviour

    Abstract
Defines a national information policy, identifying 6 component areas. Describes some specific aspects of government action that can be used as a test of commitment to an national information policy. Suggests support for electronic information industries is one of the key methods by which a government can influence information policy, citing the case of the USA as an example. More specifically, considers freedom of information, and policy towards public and national libraries. Argues for the creation of a Coalition for Public Information in each major country, to provide a forum where members of the information community can participate in public policy discussions about technical, economic and social questions arising from the use of information derived from the new electronic communication and information delivery technologies

    Abstract
Reviews the significant changes in information technology over the last 50 years and considers the many implications for information services. The Internet, global access to distributed information sources, and remote users all present challenges to would-be providers of information services. As resources proliferate, the information professional must develop new methods for locating and accessing them: reliance on publishers and reviews is no longer sufficient. Information service providers can now serve more diverse clienteles, but must be aware of the greater range of information needs and styles of information seeking. The continuing challenge is to harness the information technologies to meet these needs

Discusses the various issues, pressures and problems facing those information workers involved in setting up a new electronic public information systems. These include: standards, open systems and information technology strategies; user expectations; exchange and cooperation; information expertise; finding the right location; technology; sources of information; and resources. Describes the Society of Public Information Networks (SPIN), an organization created to represent the interests of all local authorities involved in Electronic Public Information technologies such as audiotex, multimedia and cable, and outlines its aims and objectives. Warns of the risks of neglecting the provision of public information

    Abstract
The growing availability of information, especially from electronic sources, offers both potential and problems for the researcher. Information has become a commodity shaped to fit the needs of the commissioner. It follows that user requirements will dictate not just the research remit (what information to collect) but also the selection criteria (why the information is needed). Establishing why information is needed is an integral step in deciding on the particular focus of any search strategy. A comprehensive, or indeed a balanced, collection of information may be neither necessary nor desirable. End users may only require information that will support their information need. Choice of sources will also be governed by theses information needs, and their selection is a vital factor in the provision of information and its communication to the end user
