    Abstract
We chronicle the use of acknowledgments in 20th century chemistry by analyzing and classifying over 2,000 specimens covering a 100-year period. Our results show that acknowledgment has gradually established itself as a constitutive element of academic writing- one that provides a revealing insight into the structural nature of subauthorship collaboration in science. Complementary data an rates of coauthorship are also presented to highlight the growing importance of teamwork and the increasing division of labor in contemporary chemistry. The results of this study are compared with the findings of a parallel study of collaboration in both the social sciences and the humanities.

    Abstract
We chronicle the use of acknowledgments in 20th-century scholarship by analyzing and classifying more than 4,500 specimens covering a 100-year period. Our results show that the intensity of acknowledgment varies by discipline, reflecting differences in prevailing sociocognitive structures and work practices. We demonstrate that the acknowledgment has gradually established itself as a constitutive element of academic writing, one that provides a revealing insight into the nature and extent of subauthorship collaboration. Complementary data an rates of coauthorship are also presented to highlight the growing importance of collaboration and the increasing division of labor in contemporary research and scholarship.

    Abstract
The database used to publish the 20th edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) was produced on ESS (Editorial Support System). Systematic changes are being made in the database that will facilitate (1) converting ESS records to the USMARC format, (2) searching for component parts of and analyzing synthesized DDC numbers, and (3) tracking hierarchical relationships not expressed by the DDC notation.

    Abstract
Presents some facts and figures on many 19th- and 20th-century Italian serials catalogues, examined during a bibliography study tour of libraries and documentation centres in 7 cities. Describes the catalogues' structures in general terms, often citing catalogue titles and the numbers and types of periodicals held in collections. Provides brief historical background notes, and comments posotovely or negatively on features of the catalogues, located in Milan, Florence, Empoli, Leghorn, Cagliari, Sassari and Turin

    Abstract
Uncertainty over the future of cataloguing and the gap between cataloguing research and practice exist partially because of the rapid change in technology over the 20th century. Explores the role of technology in its relation to cataloguing knowledge and research. Examines the history of technology in cataloguing. A conventional view of cataloguing practice is followed by a critical review of impacts of technology on cataloguing theories. Recommendations are made on some issues of cataloguing research and the directions cataloguing researchers and practitioners should take

    Abstract
Discusses the possibilities and difficulties encountered when using a thematic index to search contemporary art databanks. Jaconde and Videomuseum, 2 French databanks, are used as examples. the core problems found in the study are the methods and limits of indexing in both systems. A thematic index should be developed that is better adapted to 20th century art, based on the complementary and reciprocal relationship between text and image, and which fully exploits hypertext

    Abstract
To classify is to put things in meaningful groups, but the criteria for doing so can be problematic. Study of evolution of classification includes ontogenetic analysis of change in classification over time. We present an empirical analysis of the UDC over the entire period of its development. We demonstrate stability in main classes, with major change driven by 20th century scientific developments. But we also demonstrate a vast increase in the complexity of auxiliaries. This study illustrates an alternative to Tennis scheme-versioning method.

    Abstract
This paper presents the situation of library education in Peru during the last decades of the 20th Century, particularly dealing with education in the area of cataloging and bibliographic control. Both an historical view and the current situation are explained to give a general panorama of education in the areas of cataloging, classification, organization of electronic materials, cataloging networks, and the like. Also a short panorama of the near future is given. At the same time not only professional education is presented, but also non professional, continuing and on the job education in library and information science (LIS) in Peru.

    Abstract
The paper takes a retrospective look at the work of Henry Evelyn Bliss, classificationist theorist and author of the Bibliographic Classification. Major features of his writings and philosophy are examined and evaluated for the originality of their contribution to the corpus of knowledge in the discipline. Reactions to Bliss's work are analysed, as is his influence on classification theory of the 20th century. Contemporary work on knowledge organization is seen to continue a number of strands from Bliss's original writings. His standing as a classificationist is compared with that of Ranganathan, with the conclusion that he is not given the credit he deserves.
