- Abstract
- The Europeana, the European digital library web-service, is being developed in the framework of the EU-funded network EDLnet. The demo version of this webservice was shown at an international conference at the German National Library in Frankfurt on 1 February 2008, the prototype will be launched in November 2008. In November 2007 the EDL Foundation was established to provide cross-domain multilingual access to Europe's cultural heritage. It will facilitate formal agreement across museums, archives, audio-visual archives and libraries on how to cooperate in the delivery and sustainability of a joint portal and will provide a legal framework for use by the EU for funding purposes and as a springboard for future governance. The European Commission is supporting the process towards the Europeana with a set of projects centering on The European Library. This webservice created by the European national libraries is seen as one of the major building blocks of the Europeana.

- Abstract
- Der Aufbau der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek wurde im Herbst 2007 auf soliden Grund gestellt: Mit der European Digital Library Foundation steht eine geschäftsfähige Organisation als Trägerin der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek zur Verfügung. Sie fungiert zunächst als Steuerungsgremium für das EU-finanzierte Projekt EDLnet und übernimmt sukzessive die Aufgaben, die für den Aufbau und die Weiterentwicklung der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek notwendig sind. Die Gründungsmitglieder sind zehn europäische Dachorganisationen aus den Bereichen Bibliothek, Archiv, audiovisuelle Sammlungen und Museen. Vorstandsmitglieder sind die Vorsitzende Elisabeth Niggemann (CENL) die Vize-Vorsitzende Martine de Boisdeffre (EURBICA), der Schatzmeister Edwin van Huis (FIAT) sowie Wim van Drimmelen, der Generaldirektor der Koninklijke Bibliotheek, der Nationalbibliothek der Niederlande, welche die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek hostet. Der Prototyp für die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek wird im Rahmen des EDLnet-Projekts entwickelt. Die erste Version des Prototyps wurde auf der internationalen Konferenz »One more step towards the European Digital Library« vorgestellt, die am 31. Januar und 1. Februar 2008 in der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (DNB) in Frankfurt am Main stattfand. Die endgültige Version des Prototyps wird im November 2008 von der EU-Kommissarin für Informationsgesellschaft und Medien, Viviane Reding, in Paris vorgestellt werden. Dieser Prototyp wird direkten Zugang zu mindestens zwei Mio. digitalisierten Büchern, Fotografien, Karten, Tonaufzeichnungen, Filmaufnahmen und Archivalien aus Bibliotheken, Archiven, audiovisuellen Sammlungen und Museen Europas bieten.

- Abstract
- TELOTA (The Electronic Life of the Academy) ist eine Initiative der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, in verstärktem Maße die Möglichkeiten und Chancen der Informationstechnologie für die Akademie und ihre Forschungsvorhaben zu explorieren und umzusetzen. TELOTA betreut die Akademievorhaben in Hinblick auf die Einführung von elektronischen Arbeits- und Publikationsstrategien und trifft deshalb auf sehr unterschiedliche Bedürfnisse und Ausgangssituationen. Nach einer ersten Projektphase, in der vor allem die Breite der Möglichkeiten des elektronischen Mediums exploriert wurden, widmete sich TELOTA zwischen März 2007 und Dezember 2008 der Entwicklung von projektübergreifenden Lösungen für die Bereiche Digitale Edition, Personendatenbanken und elektronische Wörterbücher. Für die Zukunft gibt es erste Ansätze, die elektronischen Ressourcen der Akademie zu einem vernetzten Wissensportal für geisteswissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung auszubauen. Aufgaben und Ziele von TELOTA Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die Arbeit der TELOTA-Initiative der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW). Auf Initiative der "Arbeitsgruppe elektronisches Publizieren" ins Leben gerufen, widmet sich TELOTA seit 2002 der Aufgabe, moderne Informationstechnologie bewusst, geplant und nachhaltig für die Belange der BBAW nutzbar zu machen. Diese Aufgabe versteht sich sowohl im Sinne eines verstärkten Einsatzes zur Unterstützung des Forschungsprozesses als auch im Sinne einer kostenfreien Online-Präsentation von Daten und Ergebnissen für die interessierte Öffentlichkeit. Darüber hinaus soll die verstärkte "Digitalisierung" der Akademievorhaben auch den wissenschaftlichen Austausch und die Kommunikation unter Fachwissenschaftlern erleichtern und fördern (vgl. den Bericht der Arbeitsgruppe "Elektronisches Publizieren" an den Vorstand 2001). Das Akronym TELOTA steht - zusammenfassend für diese Aufgabengebiete - für "The Electronic Life of the Academy".

- "Mit dem Relaunch am 26. November 2007 bekommt vascoda (www.vascoda.de), das Internetportal für wissenschaftliche Information, ein neues Gesicht. Die komplett überarbeitete Einstiegsseite bietet zahlreiche verbesserte Funktionalitäten und ein erweitertes Informationsangebot. Einfach, schnell, möglichst preiswert und alles aus einer Hand, so wünschen sich die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler die Suche nach qualifizierten Informationen. Das Internetportal vascoda erleichtert einen solchen komfortablen Zugang zu Daten und Literatur im Internet. Die Suchmaschine hat ausschließlich wissenschaftliche Inhalte im Visier. Sie durchforstet über 100 Millionen Datensätze aus über 100 Datenbanken unterschiedlicher Anbieter. Insgesamt beteiligen sich mittlerweile weit über 40 Einrichtungen am Aufbau und an der Weiterentwicklung des Wissenschaftsportals, das gemeinsam vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) mit einem inzwischen zweistelligen Millionenbetrag gefördert wurde. Seit dem Start des Portals im Jahre 2003 wurde das zahlreiche User-Feedback gesammelt und nun im Relaunch weitestgehend umgesetzt. Der Relaunch beinhaltet zahlreiche neue Funktionen und Verbesserungen. Die Navigation ist übersichtlicher gestaltet, das Design klarer. Innovationen, mit deren Hilfe vascoda deutlich effektiver zu nutzen ist als früher. Zudem zeichnen eine hohe Usability und eine barrierearme Umsetzung die überarbeitete Website aus. Der Einsatz moderner Suchmaschinentechnologie bietet eine Reihe komfortabler Möglichkeiten zur Recherche, die den Suchgewohnheiten der Nutzerinnen und Nutzer entsprechen. So ermöglicht vascoda die Optimierung der Recherche durch individuelle Sortierung und Filterung der Ergebnislisten. Ein weiteres Komfortmerkmal sind die unterschiedlichen Navigationsangebote in Fachgruppen und in Fächern. So können sich die Nutzerinnen und Nutzer entscheiden, ob sie interdisziplinär suchen wollen oder die Suche gezielt in den jeweiligen Fachportalen starten. Auch im Bereich des angebotenen Contents bietet vascoda nun einen erheblichen Zuwachs an einschlägigen Datenbeständen. Mit der Einführung der Suchmaschinentechnologie werden die Datenbestände der an vascoda beteiligten Partner zusammengeführt. Überdies sind auch die klassischen Elemente der traditionellen Informationsversorgung, wie beispielsweise Bibliothekskataloge und Zeitschriftenverzeichnisse komfortabel eingebunden."
