Abstract: Fac-Back-OPAC is a faceted back up OPAC. This advanced catalog offers features that compare favorably with the traditional catalogs for today's library systems. Fac-Back-OPAC represents the convergence of two prominent trends in library tools: the decoupling of discovery tools from the traditional integrated library system and the use of readily available open source components to rapidly produce leading-edge technology for meeting patron and library needs. Built on code that was originally developed by Casey Durfee in February 2007, Fac-Back-OPAC is available for no cost under an open source license to any library that wants to offer an advanced search interface or a backup catalog for its patrons.

Abstract: Patron queries at a four-year comprehensive college's online public access catalog were examined via transaction logs from March 2007. Three representative days were isolated for a more detailed examination of search characteristics. The results show that library users employed an average of one to three terms in a search, did not use Boolean operators, and made use of limits one-tenth of the time. Failed queries remained problematic, as a full one-third of searches resulted in zero hits. Implications and recommendations for improvements in the online public access catalog are discussed.

Abstract

This is the first part of a two-part article that reviews 25 years of published research findings on end-user searching in online information retrieval (IR) systems. In Part 1 (Markey, 2007), the author seeks to answer the following questions: What characterizes the queries that end users submit to online IR systems? What search features do people use? What features would enable them to improve on the retrievals they have in hand? What features are hardly ever used? What do end users do in response to the system's retrievals? Are end users satisfied with their online searches? Summarizing searches of online IR systems by the search features people use everyday makes information retrieval appear to be a very simplistic one-stop event. In Part 2, the author examines current models of the information retrieval process, demonstrating that information retrieval is much more complex and involves changes in cognition, feelings, and/or events during the information seeking process. She poses a host of new research questions that will further our understanding about end-user searching of online IR systems.

Abstract

Bekanntlich kennt der Aleph-500-OPAC mehrere Arten der Darstellung der Ergebnisliste (Kurztitelanzeige), die - in Abhängigkeit von der entsprechenden Voreinstellung - bei Ergebnismengen von mehr als einem Treffer ausgegeben wird: Neben dem Display in tabellarischer Form gibt es auch eine Darstellung in Listenform, sogar mit einer Option zur Gestaltung durch berechtigte Endbenutzer. In den Online-Katalogen unseres Verbundes hat sich aber praktisch ausschliesslich die erstgenannte Variante durchgesetzt, auf die sich auch die folgenden Aussagen beschränken. Beim 6. SysBib-Treffen, das im Herbst 2002 an der Bibliothek der TU Wien stattfand, zeigten wir erstmals, wie mittels Tabellenparametrisierung und JavaScript (OPAC) die Ergebnisliste mit graphischen Symbolen für spezielle Titel (externe Links, "Sondermaterialien") angereichert werden kann. Diese zunächst für den Österreichischen Verbundkatalog (damals noch unter der Aleph-Version 14.2) erstellte Lösung stiess in systembibliothekarischen Kreisen auf grosses Interesse. Bald darauf wurde eine Variante für die OPACs der an der Verbundzentrale geführten Lokalsysteme erstellt. Diese Lösung wurde von mehreren Verbundbibliotheken mit eigenem Lokalsystem übernommen und mitunter auch weiter modifiziert. 2003 wurde sie bei der D-A-CH-Tagung in Wien vorgestellt. 2005 erfolgten die Anpassung an die Aleph-Version 16 und eine laufzeitorientierte Optimierung des Skripts. Im Februar 2007 wurde das Skript weiter verbessert, um auch bisher nicht berücksichtigte Sonderfälle der Datenstrukturen einzubinden. Da wir immer wieder Anfragen aus dem Verbund erhalten, wollen wir mit diesem Beitrag den aktuellen Stand dokumentieren. Die folgende Darstellung der Funktionsweise der Icon-Anreicherungen beschränkt sich auf eine verbale Beschreibung der zugrundeliegenden Parametrisierungen und Algorithmen. Abstract

Die Webseite The International CIPAC List besteht seit 2001. Sie verzeichnet "card-image public access catalogues" (CIPACs), d.h. Online-Kataloge auf der Basis digitalisierter (gescannter) Zettel- bzw. Bandkataloge. Das erste bekannte Beispiel eines solchen Katalogs war der 1994 realisierte Electronic Card Catalog der Universitätsbibliothek Princeton, NJ (USA). Seit der Mitte der 1990er Jahre begannen sich CIPACs auch in Europa zu etablieren. Das zunächst als Nebenprodukt meiner Master-Arbeit (MSc in Information& Library Management, University of Central England, Birmingham, 2002) erstellte Webverzeichnis aller bekannten Kataloge dieser Art begann mit etwa 20 Links. Anfang 2002 waren es bereits 50 Kataloge aus 11 Ländern, Anfang 2007 gar schon 110 Kataloge aus 19 Ländern. Auf den ersten Blick verzeichnet Deutschland mit 37 Links das stärkste Kontingent, doch bei genauerer Betrachtung hält Italien die Spitze, da eine der acht aus diesem Land angeführten Web-Adressen zu der Seite Cataloghi Storici führt, die ihrerseits 215 Kataloge von 35 italienischen Bibliotheken nachweist. Da die Auflistung von über hundert Links den Rahmen einer simplen Webseite, die nur Scroll- und Ankerfunktionen aufwies, sprengte, wurde das Verzeichnis kürzlich in eine neue Form gebracht, in der pro angezeigter Seite immer nur die Kataloge jeweils eines zuvor selektierten Landes angezeigt werden. Dadurch wird das Scrollen weitgehend vermieden; lediglich die Auflistung für Deutschland ist nun länger als eine Bildschirmseite. Wie man mittels einer Google-Recherche unschwer feststellen kann, ist das Verzeichnis inzwischen auf zahllosen Webseiten verlinkt und somit zu einem Service geworden, das weiterhin gepflegt und gewartet werden will. Hinweise auf neue bzw. noch nicht in dieser internationalen Liste verzeichnete CIPACs sind daher stets willkommen (bitte E-Mail an <oberh@web.de>).
