Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between national culture and information source use (ISU) on a global level. A secondary analysis was carried out on three different data sets. They were (a) country-level data on ISU from World Values Survey (2005-2009); (b) country-specific mean scores of Hofstede's national culture dimensions (HNCD) of individualism (IDV), power distance (PDI), time orientation, uncertainty avoidance (UAI), masculinity (MAS), and indulgence (IVR); and (c) measures of wealth. The analysis showed the importance of three national culture dimensions of PDI (the way people of a nation interact with authorities), IDV (the degree of centrality of person or groups in a country), and IVR (the agreeableness of joy and happiness in a country) for explaining the cross-cultural differences of ISU. The findings were explained through HNCD, and four cultural patterns of ISU were identified. However, further research is required to better understand the complex relationships of cultural factors, ISU, and other societal variables.

Abstract

Vor einigen Monaten weilte ich bei einem ehemaligen Schwergewicht unserer Branche. Das Schwergewicht ist ein solches geblieben, aber über die Existenz der Informationsbranche mache ich mir seit 2009 öffentlich Gedanken, und seitdem ist die Lage nicht besser geworden. Wir überlegten gemeinsam, ob auch die Zeit für publizistische Kampagnen in der Informationsbranche vorbei sei. Immerhin hätte ich in den letzten Wochen mehrere Male kritisch zur Datenschutzgrundverordnung (DSGVO) Stellung genommen, merkte ich an. Mein Gegenüber brach in Gelächter aus. "Aber Herr Bredemeier", sagte er. "Da laufen Sie nur offene Türen ein. Wir sind doch alle Ihrer Meinung." Heute habe ich immer noch niemanden getroffen, der sich für die DSGVO und gegen meine Grundthese ausgesprochen hätte. Diese lautete: Die Datenschutzgrundverordnung verringert die Aktivitäten der bundesrepublikanischen Zivilgesellschaft und schadet ihr. Noch traf ich jemanden, der einen persönlichen Nutzen aus der Existenz der DSGVO gezogen hätte. Kann es sein, dass sich der abstrakt behauptete Nutzen für den Bürger nirgendwo in einem konkreten wahrgenommenen Nutzen niederschlägt?

Abstract

It is suggested that the knowledge organization (KO) field places greater emphasis on basic research that examines the sociology of KO systems (KOS) and the broader, environmental reasons for the development of both formal and informal KOS. This approach is contrasted with applied KO, which focuses on the practical construction or improvement of specific KOS. The preponderance of applied research in the field of KO is confirmed, at least within the document-centric strand more closely aligned with library and information science, through a survey of articles in the Knowledge Organization journal published between 2009 and 2018. The survey utilized the Frascati Manual definitions for basic and applied research, and referenced Tennis's classification of KO research (2008). There is considerable potential for building on the critical tradition of KO, with various areas ripe for further sociological investigation. A sociology of KOS could also be accommodated in the popular KO approach of domain analysis.
