Wer es noch elementarer haben möchte, klickt sich zur Britannica Elementary Encyclopaedia, welche unter der gleichen Oberfläche wie die anderen Werke zugänglich ist. Schließlich umfasst die Suite einen Weltatlas sowie einsprachige Wörterbücher und Thesauri von Merriam-Webster in der Collegiate- und Student-Ausbaustufe mit allein 555 000 Definitionen, Synonymen und Antonymen. Wer viel in englischer Sprache recherchiert oder gar schreibt, leckt sich angesichts dieses Angebots (EUR 99,95) die Finger, zumal die Printausgabe gut 1600 Euro kostet. Die Texte sind einfach kolossal - allein das Inhaltsverzeichnis des Artikels Germany füllt sieben Bildschirmseiten. Schon die Inhalte aus den BritannicaBänden bieten mehr als doppelt so viel Text wie die rund tausend Euro kostende Brockhaus Enzyklopädie digital (c't 22/02, S. 38). Allein die 220 000 thematisch einsortierten Web-Links sind das Geld wert. Wer die 2,4 Gigabyte belegende Komplettinstallation wählt, muss sogar nie mehr die DVD (alternativ vier CD-ROMs) einlegen. Dieses Jahr muss sich niemand mehr mit dem Britannica-typischen Kuddelmuddel aus Lexikonartikeln und vielen, vielen Jahrbüchern herumschlagen - außer dem Basistext der drei Enzyklopädien sind 'nur' die zwei Jahrbücher 2001 und 2002 getrennt aufgeführt. Wer des Englischen mächtig ist, mag hier die gute Gelegenheit zum Kauf nutzen."

    Abstract
    You were going to get one-click access to the full text of nearly every book that's ever been published. Books still in print you'd have to pay for, but everything else-a collection slated to grow larger than the holdings at the Library of Congress, Harvard, the University of Michigan, at any of the great national libraries of Europe-would have been available for free at terminals that were going to be placed in every local library that wanted one. At the terminal you were going to be able to search tens of millions of books and read every page of any book you found. You'd be able to highlight passages and make annotations and share them; for the first time, you'd be able to pinpoint an idea somewhere inside the vastness of the printed record, and send somebody straight to it with a link. Books would become as instantly available, searchable, copy-pasteable-as alive in the digital world-as web pages. It was to be the realization of a long-held dream. "The universal library has been talked about for millennia," Richard Ovenden, the head of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries, has said. "It was possible to think in the Renaissance that you might be able to amass the whole of published knowledge in a single room or a single institution." In the spring of 2011, it seemed we'd amassed it in a terminal small enough to fit on a desk. "This is a watershed event and can serve as a catalyst for the reinvention of education, research, and intellectual life," one eager observer wrote at the time. On March 22 of that year, however, the legal agreement that would have unlocked a century's worth of books and peppered the country with access terminals to a universal library was rejected under Rule 23(e)(2) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. When the library at Alexandria burned it was said to be an "international catastrophe." When the most significant humanities project of our time was dismantled in court, the scholars, archivists, and librarians who'd had a hand in its undoing breathed a sigh of relief, for they believed, at the time, that they had narrowly averted disaster.

    As the team describe in a paper posted (http://arxiv.org/abs/1605.04951) on arXiv, they found that figures did indeed matter-but not all in the same way. An average paper in PubMed Central has about one diagram for every three pages and gets 1.67 citations. Papers with more diagrams per page and, to a lesser extent, plots per page tended to be more influential (on average, a paper accrued two more citations for every extra diagram per page, and one more for every extra plot per page). By contrast, including photographs and equations seemed to decrease the chances of a paper being cited by others. That agrees with a study from 2012, whose authors counted (by hand) the number of mathematical expressions in over 600 biology papers and found that each additional equation per page reduced the number of citations a paper received by 22%. This does not mean that researchers should rush to include more diagrams in their next paper. Dr Howe has not shown what is behind the effect, which may merely be one of correlation, rather than causation. It could, for example, be that papers with lots of diagrams tend to be those that illustrate new concepts, and thus start a whole new field of inquiry. Such papers will certainly be cited a lot. On the other hand, the presence of equations really might reduce citations. Biologists (as are most of those who write and read the papers in PubMed Central) are notoriously mathsaverse. If that is the case, looking in a physics archive would probably produce a different result.

    What Is CAIDA? Association for Internet Data Analysis, started in 1997 and is based in the San Diego Supercomputer Center. CAIDA is led by KC Claffy along with a staff of serious Net techie researchers and grad students, and they are one of the worlds leading teams of academic researchers studying how the Internet works [6] . Their mission is "to provide a neutral framework for promoting greater cooperation in developing and deploying Internet measurement, analysis, and visualization tools that will support engineering and maintaining a robust, scaleable global Internet infrastructure." In addition to the Walrus visualization tool and the skitter monitoring system which we have touched on here, CAIDA has many other interesting projects mapping the infrastructure and operations of the global Internet. Two of my particular favorite visualization projects developed at CAIDA are MAPNET and Plankton [7] . MAPNET provides a useful interactive tool for mapping ISP backbones onto real-world geography. You can select from a range of commercial and research backbones and compare their topology of links overlaid on the same map. (The major problem with MAPNET is that is based on static database of ISP backbones links, which has unfortunately become obsolete over time.) Plankton, developed by CAIDA researchers Bradley Huffaker and Jaeyeon Jung, is an interactive tool for visualizing the topology and traffic on the global hierarchy of Web caches.

München [u.a.] 1984, hier S. 255 - Passage im Original in Klammern) Der Autor, Nicolaus Sombart (*1923), Sohn des seinerzeit bekannten Wirtschaftswissenschaftlers Werner Sombart (1863-1941), der von 1917 bis 1931 an der Berliner Universität lehrte, referiert in seinem Bericht wichtige Hinweise auf technischen Gebrauch und kulturelle Alltagspraxis von Konversationslexika in einem tradierten, akademisch geprägtem Umfeld seiner Zeit. In Bezug auf die Zeitumstände des hier in seiner digitalen Aufbereitung anzuzeigenden Konversationslexikons, dessen erster Band 1902 erschien -19o5 mussten die ersten Bände bereits nachgedruckt werden und 1909 war man zu einem abschließenden 20. Band vorgedrungen und diesem sollten noch bis 1916 weitere vier Bände als Jahressupplemente folgen; doch erst mit den drei folgenden Nachtragsbänden («Kriegsnachträgen«) wurde das Werk endgültig 1920 abgeschlossen - hat Nicolaus Sombart selbst an anderer Stelle festgestellt, dass dies eine »verhältnismäßig kurze Periode zwischen 1890 und 1910« war und bezeichnete sie als »Höhepunkt der wilhelminischen >Ära<, in der auch alle Innovationen der Kunst ihren Ursprung haben«. München [u.a.] 1991, hier S. 105) Ein solches, auch im übertragenen Sinn Werte stabilisierendes Elternhaus -dem Status eines deutschen Professors jener Zeit entsprechend als vornehme Grunewald-Villa mit gepflegtem Vorgarten und sauber gerechtem Kiesweg - inspiriert bibliothekarisch weiterzuforschen. Wie sah die Gelehrten-Bibliothek dieses bedeutenden Vaters konkret aus? Was können wir heute in Zeiten desktopgenerierter Cyberwelten, minimalisierter Soft- und Hardware-Applikationen, Gediegenheit signalisierender CD-ROMBoxen odervirtueller Ordner-Symbole im heimeligen Retro-Look über die damalige Praxis von Raumvergabe, Buchaufstellung und Lesegewohnheiten besonders unter dem genannten Aspekt des Gelehrtendiskurses sagen? Einblicke in die akademische Privatsphäre waren damals selten, sie sind es übrigens auch heute noch. Doch dann der zweite Fund: eine Fotografie von Felix H. Man (»ohne Titel« - Abb. 1), an entlegener Stelle erstmals 1997 publiziert, gibt genau hierzu Auskunft.
