- Abstract
- Structured abstracts are abstracts which include subheadings such as: background, aims, participants methods and results. These are rapidly replacing traditional abstracts in medical periodicals, but the number and detail of the subheadings used varies, and there is a range of different typographic settings. Reviews a number of studies designed to investigate readers' preferences for different typographic settings and layout. Over 400 readers took part in the study: students; postgraduates; research workers and academics in the social sciences. The most preferred version emerged from the last of 3 studies and 2 additional studies were then carried out to determine preferences for the overall position and layout of this most preferred version on a A4 page. The most preferred version for the setting of the subheadings are printed in bold capital letters

- Abstract
- Discusses factors controlling the speed of image and text processing other than those related to the scanning software. A flatbed scanner taker around 45 seconds to scan a sheet of A4. The computer itself imposes a limit on speed. File size makes demands on resources. A4 ASCII files take about 3,5K, formatted word processed text 7,5K. A4 images require 0,9Mb for black and white, 7 Mb for grey scale and 21,1Mb for colour. Evaluates uses for scanners and compares them with conventional entry routes

- Abstract
- The digitisation of images produces large data files. A scanned A4 size line drawing might typically occupy 80Kb, a 5 inch by 4 inch black and white photograph 400Kb and the colour equivalent 4Mb. Describes technology for compressing image files with the example of Wirral Metropolitan college's 112 black and white photographs with text and display software compressed onto a 1.44Mb diskette. This was achieved by fractal image compressioin which may operate up to ratios of 100:1. Explains the advantages of Dr. Michael Barnsley's Fractal Transform. It is particularly effective for complex, high resolution images of nature
