    Abstract
    Der Aufbau der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek, der Europeana, wie sie inzwischen heißt, ist eingebettet in verschiedene Aktivitäten und Initiativen der Europäischen Kommission, die bereits 2005 gestartet wurden. Im Folgenden soll die Entwicklung seit der am 30. September 2005 veröffentlichten Mitteilung nachgezeichnet und ein Überblick über die Aktivitäten insbesondere der Nationalbibliotheken gegeben werden.

    Abstract
    The European Library (TEL) ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt von acht europäischen Nationalbibliotheken sowie der zentralen Katalogisierungsinstitution in Italien (ICCU), das unter der Schirmherrschaft der Conference of European national librarians (CENL) initiiert wurde. Mit The European Library wird ein Service entwickelt, der eine integrierte Suche über die Sammlungen und Kataloge mit Verlinkung zu den angeschlossenen Dienstleistungen der beteiligten Nationalbibliotheken bieten wird. Im TEL-Projekt wurde die Machbarkeit dieses Vorhabens untersucht und die Ergebnisse sind vielversprechend: Die Projektpartner haben sich verpflichtet, nach Ende des Projektes im Januar 2004 die Ergebnisse in einen funktionsfähigen Service zu überführen. Die Freischaltung von The European Library ist für Anfang 2005 geplant. Im vorliegenden Text werden die organisatorischen, finanziellen und technischen Ergebnisse des Projektes vorgestellt.
