- "2008 wurde bekannt gegeben, dass die 2005/06 präsentierte 21. Auflage des Brockhaus vorerst die letzte gedruckte sein wird. Ab dem 15. April 2008 war die Restauflage zwar noch zu kaufen, aber gleichzeitig wurde das Lexikon vollständig und gratis ins Internet gestellt. Vor kurzem erklärte der Verlag, dass der Betrieb eingestellt wird und nur die vertraglichen Verpflichtungen aus der Online-Aktualisierung bis 2020 weiterlaufen. Viele Kommentatoren halten die 30-bändige, gedruckte Ausgabe für ein Relikt und einen elitären Luxus angesichts der schnellfingerig zugänglichen Lexika im Internet. Der Vorgang hat neben der geschäftlich-profitorientierten eine prinzipielle, wissens- und bildungsgeschichtliche Seite. Allein darum geht es, denn der Brockhaus als Geschäft ist eine reine Privatsache der Eigentümer. Das Konversationslexikon verdankt seine Entstehung einer historischen Konstellation, die sich heute im Zeichen von Internet und elektronischer Revolutionierung der Kommunikation wiederholt. Auch die Konstellation in der Entstehungszeit des Konversationslexikons um 1810 war geprägt durch ein ökonomisches Kalkül und ein konzeptionelles Dilemma.

- Der neue Herausgeber des Brockhaus, ein Tochterverlag von Bertelsmann, hat unterdessen angekündigt, zum gedruckten Lexikon zurückzukehren. Etwa Anfang 2015 soll die 22. Auflage erscheinen. In Zeiten des virtuellen Informationsoverkills gebe es einen Bedarf an Orientierung, an Relevanzvorgaben, sagt Geschäftsführer Christoph Hünermann. Ausgerechnet Bertelsmann druckte 2008 ein knapp 1 000 Seiten langes Wikipedia-Lexikon mit den 50 000 meist gesuchten Begriffen. Eine Experten-Redaktion überprüfte die Einträge sicherheitshalber zuvor - soll allerdings kaum Fehler gefunden haben."
