    Abstract
Describes Jules Maciet's collection in the Bibliothèque des arts décoratifs, one of Paris's most accessible specialist art libraries, which offers the researcher an eclectic range of visual materials inclusing rare prints and photographs. It is an exhaustive collection still classified today according to the original system. An index of engravers, publishers and printsellers, and sources serves artists, researchers and other users

    Abstract
Defines retrospective conversion, discusses the origins of the term and describes developments during the 80s. Discusses objectives of retrospective conversion, techniques of data capture and conversion in house as opposed to conversion by an outside specialist. Stresses the need for planning, possible problems, the choice of standards and of bibliographic storage

    Abstract
The Cinémathèque, founded in 1963, houses a film collection of some 27.000 items. The manual catalogue had long proved inadequate, and in 1989 computerization was put in hand, on a very limited budget. The initial choice of US software (STAR) in the absence of a suitable French-language program, resulted in a succession of problems, because of the necessity of adapting STAR for French and the lack of finance to buy in specialist expertise. Describes how staff developed database structures, subject headings, and cataloguing rules. It is hoped to complete the project by the end of 1993

    Abstract
The national library service SBN originated 12 years ago and now comprises 450 libraries in a joint computerised network, with some 2.500.000 entries in the joint catalogue. The Ministry of Culture, universities, local administration, and research and cultural instituions are all equal but independent partners, though as a publicly funded initiative the network is hamoered by bureaucracy. Current developments include retroconversion and the creation of specialist databases of manuscripts, grey literature and sound materials. At present the cataloguing function is successful, but interlibrary loan remains unsatisfactory

    Abstract
Considers whether an information system can be designed that is capable of meeting the needs of researchers students' for training and those of the general public for information. Tests a system for specialists to determine whether non specialist could use it and whether other uses could be found for such databanks. This multimedia information system based on natural language text searching uses hypertext, associating texts, images, maps and plans of the Greek site of Delphi. Discusses natural language searching, the respective and complementary contributions of automatic and manual indexing, image and document retrieval from other databanks and the different modalities of interactive searching. Defines the features of this type of information system and assesses the limits and the potential of such a product

    Abstract
Describes the methodology used to evaluate 5 examples of bibliographic management software currently available. Provides a profile of the Library of the National Assemply of Quebec and the services it offers: reference, research, and reconstruction of debates. Identifies the problems it faces and presents an evaluation of its technical needs, needs relating to data control and bibliographies, and staff needs. Analyzes specialist information and the preliminary list of chosen programmes and compares the software using the following criteria: ease of use; assistance; customization; research; networking capabilities; transferabiblity; and price. Considers reasons for the ultimate choice of library master and discusses the question of staff training

    Abstract
Contribution to the ongoing debate on the French subject headings list RAMEAU, which has been much criticised as time consuming and inflexible. Proposed technical solutions to recurring problems with complex syntax, strucutre of hierarchical and associative links, and rigity of language are discussed, in the context of computerised cataloguing and retrieval using OPACs. As a universal indexing language RAMEAU is more appropriate for medium sized specialised libraries and specialist researchers. However the 2 possible subject indexing techniques, linguistic treatment of whole text and thesaurus, are now beginning to be viewed as complementary approaches

    Abstract
The social sciences documentation centre (CDSH) of the French National Research Centre initiated the publication in 1988 of a psychology periodicals catalogue, Catalogue thématiques des revues de psychologie. Discusses the problems involved in setting up such a catalogue, with specific reference to deciding how a printed source can best complement its parent on-line data base: in this case, CDSH's PSYSIS. The decision to produce the catalogue has been largely precipitated by low uptake of the data base. Considerable attention has been given to delimiting coverage (French and foreign specialist periodicals, multi-disciplinary periodicals); defining descriptors (involving decisions about who the periodical is aimed at); and what information to include under each entry. The main problems, still to be solved, concern lack of adequate software (only a relational data base would be fully satisfactory); and inadequate information about user requirements from hard copy material as opposed to on-line data bases. The results of this preliminary evaluation, albeit tentative, are of considerable relevance to the delopment of strategies for diffusing information on scientific periodicals in general.

The future of standardization of bibliographic document processing depends a great deal upon electronic data processing techniques. Shows that the working out of library standards and their integration into data processing, telecommunications and optical disc storage techniques raises important questions regarding the professional habits of librarians

    Abstract
If the current means of communication are considered to be essential tools for a democracy then it is a very different understanding of democracy to that of the ancient Greeks and claims that the information highways are not factors of democratization because they favour only those who have access to them. Emphasizes however that the Internet represents an enormous opportunity for librarians that they ignore at their peril in that it offers flexibility, instantaneity, affordability and knows no boundaries. Recommends that librarians and information specialists leran how communications technology can serve them while emphasizing that the information they require is frequently to be found in their own collections

    Abstract
The library, centre of the local network of educational, social and cultural establishments, introduced its multimedia catalogue in 1994. Records assessed by graphic interfaces include all documents and supports: users can call up accompanying text, images, audiovisual extracts, using a series of simple menus. For the librarians, maintaining the catalogue, converting documents into digital form and creating links is time consuming and needs special skills, but the impact on collection use and enhancement of the library's image are considerable, while the availability of digital copies helps conserve fragile documents

    Abstract
Outlines the difficulties experienced by users in the searching of OPACs. Describes visits to 3 scientific libraries in Montreal which provide OPACs: the library of the Ecole Polytechnique which offers ARCHIMEDE; the scientific library of the University of Quebec which offers BADADUQ; and the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library of McGill University which offers MUSE. Compares user training programmes offered by each of these libraries and discusses the librarians' responses to a questionnaire on user training under the following headings: mode of learning; teacher participation; marketing policy; and statistics of OPAC usage
