    Abstract
    Der Beitrag beschreibt eine Usability-Studie zur Evaluation eines betrieblichen IntranetAngebots zum Thema Multimediales Lernen. Es wurde eine mehrstufige, kombinierte Evaluation durchgeführt eine heuristische Evaluation mit den neu entwickelten Heuristicsfor Web Communication als expertenorientierte Methode und ein Produkttest (Benutzertest) im Usability-Labor mit der Methode des lauten Denkens als benutzerorientierte Methode. Die Durchführung der Studie wird beschrieben und die Methoden diskutiert. Die Heuristics for Web Communication benötigen geschulte Gutachter, sind schnell und einfach anzuwenden und unterstützen ein systematisches Vorgehen beim Entdecken von Usability-Problemen. Die Evaluation mit den Heuristiken ist gut kombinierbar mit einem Benutzertest und ergänzt ihn, indem sie Usability-Probleme aufdeckt, die in Produkttests vermutlich nicht gefunden werden. Der Aufwand für den Produkttest ist sehr hoch, er liefert anschauliche und aussagekräftige Aussagen von echten Nutzern und rechtfertigt unter Umständen den Aufwand

    Abstract
    Purpose - The aim of this paper is to ask why the libraries and the computer and media centres of German universities are picking up too little to improve the conditions for learning, teaching and research. Design/methodology/approach - With the founding of the Information, Communication and Media Center/Informations-, Kommunikations- und Medienzentrums (ICMC/IKMZ), the central services of the Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus (BTU Cottbus) library, computer center, multimedia center and administrative data processing were combined on a common management level, and the prerequisites for the development of integrated information management were created. Findings - On this basis the following goal was set: the realization of more efficient organizational structures for a broad spectrum of customer- and service-oriented information, communications and media (ICM) offers for research, teaching and administration. Originality/value - The paper gives an overview of German discussion on the convergence of services, and presents the ICMC/IKMZ of Cottbus University as an example of a converged institution.

    Abstract
    A model for analysing multimedia information is proposed from the point of view of the theory of communication. After a brief presentation of the complex map of the sciences that deal with multimedia communication in its different aspects, the current multimedia revolution is historically contextualized as a tendency towards messages that are able to build near-reality experiences (virtual reality). After setting the theoretical point of view, an analysis of multimedia messages is substantiated and a model is presented. The first part of the model deals with the different communications channels and tools: still images, movies, sounds, texts, text with illustrations, audiovisuals and interactive multimedia, with an emphasis in nontextual documents. The second part addresses the global properties of the multimedia message, which are of a textual and metatextual nature. The overlapping of media, channels, genres and messages-and the conscious and technical use of such interactions-is precisely one of the main and outstanding characteristics of the multimedia discourse, and requires specific moves in indexing languages development. The multimedia environment has also a great potential to promote a wider theory of knowledge organization, bringing closer distant fields like scientific and fictional indexing or verbal and image indexing. It is stated that such a unified theory requires a closer attention to the pragmatic aspects of indexing and the inclusion of new semantic layers. A simple indexing model is proposed to illustrate who to address these challenges.

    Abstract
    Integrated multimedia systems process text, graphics, and other discrete media as well as digital audio, and video data. Considerable amounts of graphics, audio and video data in their uncompressed form, especially moving pictures, require storage and digital network capabilities that will not be available in the near future. Nevertheless, local, as well as networked, multimedia applications and systems have become realities. In order to cope with these storage and communication requirements in such integrated multimedia systems, compression technology is essential. This paper starts with a brief motivation of the need for compression and subsequently states the essential requirements for these techniques in the scope of multimedia systems and applications. As most of these techniques apply the same principles, namely, the source, entropy, and hybrid coding fundamentals, these are explained in detail. Based on a general framework of the steps encountered in a compression system - data preparation, processing, quantization, and entropy coding - this paper outlines details about the techniques developed by CCITT (H.261, i.e. px64), in the ISO/IEC (JPEG, MPEG) stadardization bodies and the proprietary DVI system

    Abstract
    News is information about recent events of general interest, especially as currently reportes by newspapers, periodicals, radio or television. News is the quintessential multimedia data. While newspaper editors (human and/or algorithmic) may still define the core content of electronic news, new communication technologies will enable the integration of news from a wide variety of sources and provide access to supplemental material from enormous archives of electronic news data (text, photos, and video) in digital libraries as well as the continual streams of newly created data. The goal of electronic news delivery within this context is, however, distiguishable from both news news groups and document retrieval. Electronic news promises to deliver to the reader an edited collage of recent events from wide domains in a manner that is both comprehensive and personalized. As part of a long-term research project into the design of future news delivery systems, we have developed an overall architecture and several prototypes. These prototypes are presented in the article, along with a discussion of issues related to the presentation metaphor and to the functionality of electronic news delivery services. A prototype was demonstrated at the 1995 G-7 Economic Summit in Halifax, Canada, integrating newspaper text and photographs with television news video clips across an ATM network
