    Abstract
Librarians in West Germany have thesauri for subject cataloguing through the use of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) with the Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD - Standard Keyword Data File). There is controversy over the terminological properties of standard keyword data files, over whether SWD is universal and whether inductive vocabulary construction is successful here. Some RSWK chain components have no separate semantic isentity and, although SWD has several aids for definition precision, semantic structures are not fully expressed. At present cooperative cataloguing partners using RSWK should use SWD with it as a starting point and think about possible improvements. RSWK with SWD is at present unsuitable for personal computers

    Abstract
The test ran between Nov 95-Aug 96 in Cologne Fachhochschule fur Bibliothekswesen (College of Librarianship). The test basis was a database of 190,000 book titles published between 1990-95. MILOS II mechanized indexing methods proved helpful in avoiding or reducing numbers of unsatisfied/no result retrieval searches. Retrieval from mechanised indexing is 3 times more successful than from title keyword data. MILOS II also used a standardized semantic vocabulary. Mechanised indexing demands high quality software and output data

    Abstract
Free text searching with keywords in a complete data store is not necessarily the best automatic retrieval method. There must be a proper classification of documents and concepts and the use of a proper classification system avoids problems of terminological deficiency. The dialogue search form makes the on-line catalogue a new information medium. A bibliographic unit must be created with as many search access points as possible, using verbal and classificatory search elements. Verbal search categories must include free text elements for individual search access requirements and a controlled vocabulary with syntactic connections. Classified data should consist of a universal classification system with clear structural notation for access and surface searching, together with several specialist subject classifications for differentiated documentation and retrieval. The universal classification needs no detailed subdivision: it serves mainly as a guide and entry to the detailed sub-systems

The research, investigating experiences of users with subject searching of on-line public access catalogues (OPACs), stresses that there is an interaction between: features of the indexing languages used; indexing principles used; design and structure of the data base; and the possiblities of the technical retrieval faculty, search mode and query language used

Cologne Library School ran a project to construct a database for literature on content cataloguing and fringe disciplines. Software was the BISMAS 1.0 programme and is now the 1.5 version. The category scheme, indexes and retrieval possibilities are described. Retrieval is mainly free text, using the whole document description and all descriptive categories. BISMAS does not permit standard data file administration so a further database was provided ...

    Abstract
Analyses mathematical terminology to give practical hints for assigning subject headings to a book and proposes a method to use for subject analysis. The method is based on connections between the subject-classification scheme of the American Mathematical Society and indexing with subject headings. Gives examples and compares them with LCSH and PRECIS. A thesaurus of mathematics, using PRECIS methods and connecting with the Amercian Mathematical Society classification is desirable. Authors could also classify their own work and the data could be printed with the books

    Abstract
Identifies the interest in questions of classified catalogues generated by the development of on-line catalogues, establishing a difference between 2 large areas: free access to information items in a systematic arrangement and expressing the contents of books by means of notational symbols in a classification system in a local catalogue. Examines the elements and structure of classification systems, the internationally important universal classifications, the procedures for book display and systematic processing in West German public libraries and exhibtion techniques in West German academic libraries. Covers universal and faceted classifications, as well as classification systems in on-line catalogues

    Abstract
The new forms of multimedia information and reference materials require an analysis of the concept of knowledge representation and how knowledge can be extracted from them. Compares these concepts with a model of human information processing and knowledge representation which is based on communication oriented concepts. Proposes a typology of general reference materials based upon this comparison. Original abstract

    Abstract
We provide a model for the reception of knowledge from externalized information sources. The model is based on a cognitive understanding of information processing and draws up ideas of an exchange of information in communication processes. Karl Popper's three-world theory with its orientation on falsifiable scientific knowledge is extended by John Searle's concept of collective intentionality. This allows a consistent description of externalization and reception of knowledge including scientific knowledge as well as everyday knowledge.

    Abstract
Information literacy and autonomy have become key values for the image of man in a society that is increasingly shaped by digitalization and artificial intelligence. The purpose of this book is to describe abstraction, analogy, inference, plausibility and creativity as basic skills of cognitive information processing and prerequisites for autonomous informational action.

    Abstract
In this paper a model for understanding the concept of information is presented and how the processes of externalization and perception of information by human beings could be understood. This model is different from the standard information theoretic model. It combines the understanding of cognitive information processing as an act of information generation from sense impressions with communication theoretic considerations. This approach can be of value for any system that is regarded as a knowledge system with an in-built ordering structure. As an application some consequences will be drawn for the design of information systems which claims to handle information itself (e.g. multimedia information systems) instead of giving references to bibliographic entities

    Abstract
A survey is given, how modifications in the field of the information processing and technology have influenced the concepts for teaching and studying the subjects of knowledge organization and information retrieval in German universities for library and information science. The discussion will distinguish between fields of modifications and fields of stability. The fields of the modifications are characterised by procedures and applications in libraries. The fields of stability are characterised by theory and methods
