    Abstract
The successful implementation of Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) requires a previous design based on a methodology that includes key steps as follows: capture of critical information and analysis of the current document situation: functional and/or technical options that involve the treatment of the document fonds considered; document management applications design (data, text, images, audio, video) under a functional, technical and economic focus; global and modular project defined as a strategic EDMS plan

    Abstract
The increasing emphasis on the importance of corporate intelligence in promoting competitiveness has generated demand for a new interdisciplinary service based on providing data and information geared to the needs of decision makers. The mission of corporate intelligence is to create products such as verbal and audiovisual presentations, bulletins / newsletters, and summary reports, relevant to the immediate specific needs of the organisation. This new service transforms isolated data into high value added information products, opening up new opportunities for interdisciplinary specialists in business information units

    Abstract
Presents the results of an evaluation of the Spanish Web OPACs. A checklist approach was employed to access the interface and searching options. Evaluates main page, labels, text, instructional information, online help and page layout. The data gathered allow for the ranking of the OPACs, as well as the identification of weaknesses in the catalogues

    Abstract
Analyzes quality control problems from the viewpoint of bibliographic database producers. Aims to systematize the different criteria suggested for database quality evaluation, and to enumerate useful data collection methods. Focuses on the relationship between quality and database design, as seen through the example of the ISOC database

    Abstract
Reports results of an automated search of the term 'information technology' and 20 related terms in the ERIC database, 1982-1991, which revealed data related to: scientific production relating to information technology; core journals; types of documents; types of authors and their output; sponsoring institutions; publishing output by country; desciptors; and related terms. The following bibliometric laws are applied: Bradford's law; Lotka's law; and Spearman's and Pearson's laws. Provides an insight into the role of bibliometrics as a scientific discipline for the study of the development of new technologies and their impact on information activity

    Abstract
Shows the possibilities that exist to create a basic hypertext interface for a thesaurus management system. The project has been built in 3 stages: conceptual data model for the thesaurus; development of the management tools, that is, the thesaurus management system; and the hypertext interfaces. The system has been developed on Windows and combines the power of relational database management systems and the navigational flexibility of Guide, a hypertext shell. presents 2 interface models. Concludes that hypertext interfaces improve management, and open a new path for knowledge organization research

    Abstract
Account of the experience of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre CIMMYT based in Mexico, which employs some 100 scientists and 600 support staff. To improve services the library updated its system using DB/Textworks, software which can manage large quantities of text including both data and images. The system is structured into modules for cataloguing, circulation, user information, serials, acquisition and suppliers. The chief advantages for medium sized libraries such as CIMMYT is its simplicity; tasks such as defining databases, creating reports, exchanging information so not require the intervention of computer experts

    Abstract
Describes an approach to indexing which seeks to eliminate the shortcoming of the representation of information in existing bibliographic catalogues: Subject Access Project (SAP) indexing which has been used successfully at Lund University and elsewhere. Existing catalogue records have been enriched with terms selected from lists of contents and indexes in books thus facilitating access to specific parts of documents and smaller semantic entites such as chapter titles, subject titles and data in graphic or tabulated form available in a wide range of publications

    Abstract
Since the appearance of Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopedia in the 18th century, encyclopedias have undergone some modifications but until recently there have been no substantial alterations to the basic design established by the original authors. The emergence of massive data storage systems and sophisticated methods of information retrieval such as hypertext are bringing about considerable changes in the design of encyclopedias, especially as regards interactivity. Presents a critical evaluation of these new hypermedia encyclopedias, illustrating both their advantages and their weaknesses. Discusses the future of multimedia encyclopedia publishing

    Abstract
Early research at the end of the 1950s on computerized indexing used statistical methods based on e.g. frequency, probability, clustering, and relevance. In the 1960s interest began to focus on linguistic analysis and natural language processing e.g. morphological, morphosyntactical, syntactical and semantic analysis. Since the 1980s computerized indexing research has widened to include images, graphics and sound. Examples are given of notable systems developed within each line of approach

    Abstract
An examination of the chief developments over the last decade, covering the revisions of the standards for monographs (M), serials (S), cartographic materials (CM); and non-book materials (NBM) published in 1987; and revisions of antiquarian (A) and printed music (PM) standards published in 1991. The process of development of new standards for computer files (CF) and component parts (CP), and the creation of a concise version for mongraphy, is discussed in detail, in the overall perspective of illustrating why ISBD has gained international acceptance. The consultative process of creation and willingness to accomodate diverse cultural, linguistic and bibliographical traditions is the basis, together with universal recognition of the need for standardisation for conversion and use of computerised data. Future developments will focus on standardisation of exchange formats (MARC)
