    Abstract
Describes and analyzes the following three issues which elicit strong but divergent views among cataloging faculty, students, and practitioners, and seem to have done so for as long as people have been writing about cataloging education: (1) practice versus theory in cataloging education; (2) dividing book and nonbook cataloging into separate classes versus teaching the cataloging of all materials in a single class; and (3) what setting is best for teaching cataloging-formal graduate school courses, on the job training, or continuing education offerings. Speculates on how these issues may play out in the future as cataloging education continues to evolve in the 21st century.

    Abstract
Humboldt University invited experts to Berlin recently to offer advice about its library science program. While the education of librarians for the twenty-first century needs to include practical training, those who plan to work in a research environment, or who want a research degree like a PhD, need to acquire a methodology that grounds their work in an established scholarly context.

    Abstract
The author's experiences as a master's and doctoral student at the University of California at Berkeley School of Library and Information Studies during a formative period in the history of information science, 1966-71, are described. The relationship between documentation and information science as experienced in that program is discussed, as well as the various influences, both social and intellectual, that shaped the author's understanding of information science at that time.

    Abstract
This paper briefly traces the history of library education in India and examines the status of bibliographic organization and control in the country as a major factor influencing the nature and content of courses in knowledge organization. The two basic documents from the University Grants Commission - the first one issued in 1965 and the recent one in 2001 - that have influenced university level course contents have been examined. Finally, the nature of changes that are being brought about in recent years in some universities has been highlighted.

    Abstract
The traditional library and information science (LIS) curriculum for organization of information assumes a cataloging paradigm that is built on the concepts and theories developed throughout the history of library cataloging as well as practical knowledge and skills of applying current standards and systems developed specifically for practice in cataloging. Advocates for LIS curriculum reform point out, however, that this cataloging paradigm must be replaced by knowledge of resources and systems management in order to equip LIS graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for an information society. By comparing the traditional and nontraditional curricula in the area of organization of information, this paper proposes a paradigm for organization of information in which information is defined in the context of five attributes and cataloging is perceived as a mode of organizational behavior. Some implications of this paradigm on the core curriculum for organization of information are suggested

    Abstract
This paper presents a seminar project held in the summer of 2004 at the Institute of Library Science at Humboldt University, Berlin. The result of the seminar was a book, compiled and edited by students, which contained a series of essays from professional librarians. Titled Library Science - quo vadis?, the book discusses the history, current position and the future of library science, not only in Germany, but also in other European countries and the USA. It shows that the discipline of library science is not limited to the physical aspects of managing books stacked on shelves, but that in the age of the information society, libraries play a key role in the distribution, protection, management and theories of information and knowledge.

    Abstract
Discusses the nature and importance of subject analysis and subject authority control in the retrieval tools used in libraries and information centres. Included in the discussion are the requirements for effective subject retrieval from OPACs, bibliographic databases, full text systems and the Internet. Attempts to project the nature of subject analysis systems requirements into the future and to draw some conclusions about what new information professionals should be taught, and what skills they need to acquire for application in next century

    Abstract
Cataloguing education has been the focus of definition and ebate for over a century. Moving beyond cataloguing theory and the creation of records, to the management and process of producing catalogues, increases the complexity of demands placed on professionals and educators. Graduates need to understand their catalogues and integrated systems holistically. This requires a knowledge of each element, of standards governing the creation and maintenance of records, and of the relationship between the record and the catalogue and/or its constituent network. Moreover, the professional must know these things critically, and beyond mere acceptance of standards, so that the catalogue can effectively perform its mediating function between the collection and users
