    Abstract
Library specialists in the cataloging and metadata professions have a greater purpose than simply managing information and connecting users to resources. There is a deeper and more profound impact that comes of their work: preservation of the human record. Conversations with Catalogers in the 21st Century contains four chapters addressing broad categories of issues that catalogers and metadata librarians are currently facing. Every important topic is covered, such as changing metadata practices, standards, data record structures, data platforms, and user expectations, providing both theoretical and practical information. Guidelines for dealing with present challenges are based on fundamentals from the past. Recommendations on training staff, building new information platforms of digital library resources, documenting new cataloging and metadata competencies, and establishing new workflows enable a real-world game plan for improvement.

    Abstract
The bibliographic work has assumed a great deal of importance in modern cataloging. But the concept of the work has existed for over a century, and even some of the earliest catalog codes differentiate between the intellectual work and its instances. This article will delve into the history and theory of the work, providing a basic overview of the concept as well as a summary of the myriad uses of the work throughout the history of cataloging. In addition to monographs, this paper will look at the work as applied to music, moving images, serials, and aggregates.

    Abstract
Broadsides and other single-sheet publications are important primary sources for the study of cultural, economic, political and social history that are only now being accorded the attention they deserve by historians and special collections librarians. Describes the cataloguing practices of the American Antiquarian Society in relation to these materials, and presents a consideration by MARC fields of the specifics for cataloguing 19th-century single-sheet publications

    Abstract
This Foreword provides an overview of the two parts of a collection of papers describing philosophies, practices and challenges in a cross section of libraries and how their cataloging and technical services managers are dealing with their responsibilities at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Part one includes the National Library of Canada and the Library of Congress. University libraries in Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Botswana are represented. A survey reports the use of classification systems in Latin American libraries including the factors influencing the selection of a particular scheme. Part Two is devoted to specialized and academic libraries in the United States. One academic medical library, one historical society, and two academic law libraries are represented. Philosophies and practices are described in twelve articles discussing fourteen college and university libraries ranging from the very small to the largest research libraries.

    Abstract
The article focuses on initiatives and innovations undertaken at the Library of Congress (LC) during the past decade and the first decade of the new century that affect LC cataloging - including its implementation of a new integrated library system, its digital resources activities, its adoption of the core level bibliographic record, and its role as secretariat of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. In reviewing these initiatives, the article underscores the challenges LC faces as the de facto national library in managing cataloging and the organization of information. The author highlights how LC enterprises help point the way for cataloging, both at LC and within the larger library community.

    Abstract
The catalog is the enduring means of access to information about the collection of a library. Without such information, use of a library would be limited to browsing the shelves in hopes of finding materials of interest. Hanson and Daily trace the development of catalogs from ancient times to the middle of the twentieth century. In parallel they also trace the history of cataloging rules and principles through the many codes of practice that have been developed over the years. The authors' speculation on what computerized catalogs might be like in the future, once developed, provides an interesting sidelight on the thinking of the era preceding the automation of catalogs.

    Abstract
Scholars working in the field of mediaeval history and cultural history have recognized that understanding the cataloguing and accessioning of books is central to understanding the transmission of ideas. Unfortunately, general histories of libraries and even the library literature seem content to sketch out a chronological development of cataloguing in line with the 19th and 20th century view of library development, from a simple list to complex intellectual systems. In truth, however, those individuals responsible for cataloguing books in mediaeval libraries faced many of the same challenges as cataloguers today: how to organize information; how to serve local needs; and how to provide access to individual works within larger bibliographic formats. Summarizes recent scholarship in the history of the book that relates to library cataloguing, as well as providing parallels to the cooperative library environment of today
