- Abstract
- Examines writings on the subject of back-of-the-book indexing that began to appear towards the end of the 19th century in both the USA and other countries, which gave the impression that such indexes were rare at that time. Considers whether the descriptions they provide are, in fact, accurate ones by looking at the extent to which 19th-century books have been indexed. The research indicates that by the time the writings on the subject of back-of-the-book indexing began to appear, indexes already seem to have become a standard feature at the backs of American books. Suggests explanations for these findings

- The Gladstone diaries (1825-1896) consist of 13 volumes of text recording much of the political and cultural history of the 19th century. Its index, which is in 3 parts published in a separate volume of 862 pages, was compiled using 'ingres' database software so as to allow searchers easily to find the 20.500 people, the 22.000 book and periodical titles, the 550 cabinets, the 3.000 letters and the mass of political and personal detail which the diaries contain

- The General Motors Media Archives (GMMA) project is undertaking one of the largest digitization efforts in the world. GMMA houses over 3 million still photographic images and tens of thousands of motion picture films and videos spanning over a hundred years. The images are a rich history of the evolution of transport, urban growth, fashion, design, and popular culture. GMMA has developed a layered approach to visual indexing that dissects the objects, style and implication of each image, so that the indexing system can accomodate all potential approaches to the material.
