    Abstract
Northwestern University Library has recently migrated from its locally-developed mainframe NOTIS online catalog to Endeavor's Voyager. A history of the migration is discussed and includes choosing a new integrated library system, planning for the new ILS, workflow analysis, impact on staff, and the resulting reorganization in technical services. Particular attention is paid to the management of monographic cataloging, but acquisitions is also discussed.

    Abstract
Knowledge representation is related to several disciplines, as a field of interdisciplinary knowledge. The article presents a study including the text, the culture and the geographie space. The objective of the work is to show the representation of the knowledge studied in texts from popular verbal narratives to rescue culture with mapped terminologies in specific spaces of the Paraense Amazonia. The analysis is carried out both in the study of the term in narrative Speeches as well as in the identification of the culture and the space where the history takes place. The classification of the codes of culture, its relation of the sign to the signs and the systems of signs is part of the collective cultural conscience to retrieve the information in the Age of knowledge to reach the universality.

    Abstract
This book is an extension and total revision of the author's earlier Guide to the use of UDC. The original was written in 1993 and in the intervening years much has happened with the classification. In particular, a much more rigorous approach has been undertaken in revision to ensure that the scheme is able to handle the requirements of a networked world. The book outlines the history and development of the Universal Decimal Classification, provides practical hints on its application and works through all the auxiliary and main tables highlighting aspects that need to be noted in applying the scheme. It also provides guidance on the use of the Master Reference File and discusses the ways in which the classification is used in the 21st century and its suitability as an aid to subject description in tagging metadata and consequently for application on the Internet. It is intended as a source for information about the scheme, for practical usage by classifiers in their daily work and as a guide to the student learning how to apply the classification. It is amply provided with examples to illustrate the many ways in which the scheme can be applied and will be a useful source for a wide range of information workers

    Abstract
This paper discusses two inter-related themes: the retrieval potential of faceted thesauri and XML representations of fundamental facets. Initial findings are discussed from the ongoing 'FACET' project, in collaboration with the National Museum of Science and Industry. The work discussed seeks to take advantage of the structure afforded by faceted systems for multi-term queries and flexible matching, focusing in this paper an the Art and Architecture Thesaurus. A multi-term matching function yields ranked results with partial matches via semantic term expansion, based an a measure of distance over the semantic index space formed by thesaurus relationships. Our intention is to drive the system from general representations and a common query structure and interface. To this end, we are developing an XML representation based an work by the Classification Research Group an fundamental facets or categories. The XML representation maps categories to particular thesauri and hierarchies. The system interface, which is configured by the mapping, incorporates a thesaurus browser with navigation history together with a term search facility and drag and drop query builder.

    Abstract
Purpose - To discuss the importance of S.R. Ranganathan's teachings for librarians in the 21st century. Design/methodology/approach - The article is a reflective piece examining Ranganathan's five laws of library science in their modern context. Findings - That we owe as much of a debt to Ranganathan today as we did when he first published his five laws in the 1920s. His laws remain relevant in numerous areas of modern library and information practice, and will continue to be reinterpreted by the profession for a long time to come.Practical implication - The paper argues for a revisiting of the works of Ranganathan and a continued championing of them in the library world. Originality/value - The value of the paper is in examining traditional library values in the modern era
