    Abstract
Die geschichtliche Entwicklung von ISO 2788: Documentation - Guidelines for the establishment and development of monolingual thesauri und ISO 5964: Documentation - Guidelines for the establishment and development of multilingual thesauri wird kurz beschrieben.

    Abstract
The Index of the Hebrew Daily Press developed from the desire to meet reader's needs, in particular those of secondary school students and college students preparing term papers and small research projects. The Index began in the 1950s with the organisation of a card catalogue of selected articles from journals and newspapers. Discusses the problems in defining and establishing the thesaurus for such a catalogue, the growth, changes and development of the catalogue as a result of cooperative efforts at Tel-Hai Regional College Library and the University of Haifa Library.

    Abstract
The active working life of a freelance indexer can be very long and there is a danger of becoming out of date, particularly if work is always done alone and never in collaboration with others. Emphasizes the importance of continuing professional development (CPD) for freelance indexers and discusses how this can be achieved. Discusses four elements requiring attention: indexing practice, general knowledge, subject knowledge, and equipment. Focuses on new developments in indexing practice concerning the formation of headings and the presentation of entries and describes changes in practice which have taken place during the last 20 years, including: initial capitals for headings; cross-references; filing order; abbreviated forms; Latin abbreviations attached to locators; pages ranges; subheadings; and the terminology of indexing. Suggests ways in which the freelance indexer can avail themselves of opportunities for professional development

    Abstract
Describes the InfoAccess Project at the Univ of Saskatchewan Libraries which compared searching of manual and automated indexes by 22 undergraduate psychology students to determine their searching preferences by ranking 'Psychological abstracts' in 3 formats: print, CD-ROM and a locally mounted tape service called InfoAccess. Their satisfaction regarding the physical environment, equipment, and instructional aids was also recorded. Users preferred to search with CD-ROM, but found InfoAccess to be an acceptable alternative

    Abstract
Briefly discusses 3 developing areas in indexing: embedded indexing, online and interactive indexing, and Web-based indexing. Sees these areas as new challenges for indexers' skills and suggests that indexers should be influencing the development of information tools and of the publishing process in the electronic environment

    Abstract
The book index occupies a special niche in the information retrieval world. Each index is a unique, authored work. Each book is a closed system. The text presented in a book does not change; the material is stable and fixed. Book indexers provide readers with a nonlinear way to access information in a text. Even though closed-system indexing predates the development of the printing press, a book index can be thought of as hypertext.

    Abstract
Considers the relationship between indexing and hypermedia. Conceptualizes adequate models of index structures and indexing procedures; and establishes what readers do when accessing indexes. There is a range of explicit and implicit models underlying databases, documents and indexes. A fundamental starting point for the development of substructure indexing tools for use with hypermedia is the precise specification of such models. Analysis of substructure indexing models will allow the identification of largely technical constraints and conceptual constraints. Related also are aspects of the problem deriving from how indexes can, and should be, presented. Gives a framework for the identification of such models. Examines index use. A field study was conducted looking at the use accountants make of indexing facilities an a large financial services document. Task analysis highlights the range of problems encountered, strategies employed and the kinds of solutions arrived at. There are 6 key factors underlying the 'rule of thumb' procedure users employ when interrogating an index. Discusses the implications of this study for the design of indexing within hypermedia environment

    Abstract
My goal in this short article is to bring you up to speed on Web indexing. I assume you are a person with good word skills and an inquisitive mind. Also, I assume you have good keyboard skills, access to the Internet, and have already created some HTML pages using, say, Netscape Composer. You may need help from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to upload pages onto your Web site. This article is based on my experience teaching an online interactive course in Web indexing for my company, WWWalker Web Development, in 1998. We develop Web sites, support Linux and Windows NT, write technical articles, and specialize in Web indexing.
