    Abstract
Reports results of a project to develop guidelines, based on the development of a prototype system in the field of medicine, for producing computerized reference services capable of increasing the range and quality of responses to information needs. For instance, an automatic system that can be available 24 hours a day simultaneously to multiple enquirers over an intranet or the Internet. Genuine information requests from a variety of medical information settings were collected and analyzed to form a typology of needs, focusing particularly on qualitative aspects. The typology was mapped on to computerized techniques to form a system specification and developed into a prototype WWW system

    Abstract
Presents the findings of the South Ayrshire Libraries OPen Learning and the Internet project, Sep 1997 to Oct 1998. The objective was to demonstrate how open learning materials available on the Internet could be integrated with the provision of local open learning resources to provide an enhanced learning environment in public libraries. The main areas of concentration within the project were information skills support to public library users and the provision of WWW based independent materials to learners. The organisation and retrieval of Web based resources for local use was a major issue throughout the project. Recommends the adoption of Dublin Core metadata standards, the connection of databases of resources with searchable wen pages, and the development of thesauri of terms used to index the Web based resources locally. Sstaff training, and the new skills which will need to be developed, were identified as issues. Cost was also identified as a related issue, extending to issues such as access to open learning material and the Internet

    Abstract
Describes the final status of the New Towns Urban Design Archive project (NTUDA), focusing on the structure and makeup of the electronic database used to store the text, black and white, and 24 bit colour pictures, sound and video, of the documents and items making up the archive. The project was undertaken by the Engineering Research and Development Centre, Hertfordshire University, and supported by the Commission for the New Towns and the development corporations for the 6 UK now towns

    Abstract
State of the art review of hypertext systems in use in UK libraries. Systems include public access point of information (POI) systems that provide guidance to users of local resources, and networked document retrieval systems, such as WWW, that enable users to access texts stored on machines linked by the Internet. Particular emphasis is placed on those systems that are produced inhouse by the libraries in which they are used. The review is based on a series of telephone or face to face interviews conducted with representatives of those organizations that a literature review and mailed questionnaire survey identified as current users of hypertext. Considers issues relating to system development and usability, and presents a set of appropriate guidelines for the designers of future systems. Concludes that: the principle application of hypertext systems in UK libraries is in the implementation of POI systems; that such development is most advanced in the academic sector; and that such development is set to increase in tandem with use of the WWW

    Abstract
Explores the extent to which techniques of word association can be applied to the development of interfaces for data browsing and searching for which the present methods are either not adequate or completely ineffective. Focuses on the development, application and evaluation of aids for browsing associative semantics displayed textually in interfaces as a network of related terms, or displayed visually as a network of terms and pictures

    Abstract
The OPAC has developed into an information providing tool capable of many varied tasks. Maps this development. Discusses the interface between the OPAC and the casual or inexperienced user and the expending use of networks. Surveays the growth of OPACs and shows that OPACs have developed a number of features from information retrieval. Assesses areas of further research

    Abstract
Report of a study carried out by Cimtech Ltd on behalt of the British Library Research and Development Department into the preservation of digital media in the context of legal deposit for electronic publications. A literature review was followed by an analysis of the preservation processes adopted by existing archives of digital material. Objectives for the British Library were stated along with an assessment or resource requirements to meet them. Preservation options were presented
