    Abstract
On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. It was felt that training sessions should be organised and a network created for the exchange of ideas

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the first 'Library-phone' service to answer questions from the general public by phone was started by Friesland Central Library Service in 1986. 7 provincial authorities currently provide library-phone services. A survey of the 7 services showed some variation in answers provided and in time taken to provide an answer. In some instances library-phone staff had failed to use up-to-date sources. However, in general all questions were answered satisfactorily

    Abstract
Web search engines generally use best match search techniques, rather than traditional Boolean operators. Precision in searching will depend on the numbers of selected terms appearing in a document and the inclusion of less-common words in the search string. Users are, therefore, recommended to enter as many words as possible. ExCite and WebCrawler lead users from a relevant document to other documents containing similar word patterns, while MusCat and EuroFerret suggest additional keywords for searching

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the SISO general classification scheme is criticised by staff of small libraries as too user hostile, and by staff in larger libraries, as lacking detailed subject divisions. To answer such criticism the Nederlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum has set up a Committee to examine the future of SISO. The Committee has announced plans for the creation of a series of panel discussions to enable staff from all types of library to air their views

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the Gemeenschappelijke Onderwerps Ontsluiting (Standard Subject Indexing) schedules were developed for libraries using the national online catalogue. At Leiden University's Institute voor Oost-Europees Recht en Ruslandkunde use of both UDC and GOO schedules enabled a comparison to be made of the systems. A study of approx. 1.400 titles showed that GOO was more effective in retrieving relevant documents, whereas UDC was more suited for compiling subject bibliographies. The best of both schemes should be combined for optimal retrieval

    Abstract
As part of her doctoral dissertation at Brabant Catholic University in the Netherlands A. Oomens recently held a survey to determine the relative merits of author and subject arrangements for non fiction collections. Although users browsing through the collections were more likely to find material of interest via a subject arrangement, those looking for a particular title were best served by an author arrangement. All users interviewed preferred the arrangement with which they were familiar

    Abstract
In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

    Abstract
Analyses the concepts species, class and set to explain the development of generic arrangement beginning with Aristotle's theory of essences. Explains the development from Aristotelian essences to the acceptance of accidental characteristics, culminating in the logical algebra of Boole and in a distinction between classes (as the extension of a concept) and sets (as a grouping of elements). Discusses 2 problems relating to indexing theory, selected from PRECIS and the work of Das Gupta

    Abstract
At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

    Abstract
Describes the construction of a thematic catalogue at the Central Public Library in Ghent, Belgium, which was aimed at providing access to the subjects in the fiction collection for the benefit of users at every level of development. No thematic expansion is considered necessary within general categories such as detective stories and science fiction where as thematic expansion is required within specific categories such as travel literature. To some extent, allocation of a theme depends also on the needs of users of the category

    Abstract
Existing classification systems require constant expansion to accomodate new subject fields, while subject indexing techniques fail to display the relationship of subjects. Relational databases are currently being developed which will guide users through the differing levels of subjects, using the 'cartography of science'. Such developments will enable librarians to play a more interactive role in information retrieval and will have far-reaching consequences on the design of subject-indexing systems

    Abstract
To assist users with accessing the growing range of information sources Twente University Library in the Netherlands has developed OBIS (Online Bibliotheek Informatie Systeem / Online Library Information System). OBIS provides access to online databases and a range of library catalogues, including Twente's. However, a survey of staff in the Department of Applied Education and Information Science Studies showed that library services were underused. The survey showed that users relied heavily on printed information and contacts with colleagues. To overcome this a user education programme is currently being developed

    Abstract
A study of the online catalogues of major academic libraries and databases in the Netherlands shows considerable variation in the form of name used for the author W.F. Hermans. The problem lies with a lack of authority control in headings used in the Dutch national union Pica catalogue. Reactions from 2 cataloguers point to the difficulties in maintaining catalogues in the face of reduced funding and to the important role played by the Pica project in improving library services and reducing cataloguing backlogs

    Abstract
Contribution to thematic issue of art libraries in the Netherlands. Visual images are now widely recognised as an importatnt resource for the historical research. To improve access to collections of such material H. van de Wal developed ICONCLASS in the Netherlands. With some 150.000 controlled indexing terms the scheme is hierarchical and easy to use. In response to requests a version of ICONCLASS has been developed for use in automated systems. The scheme has been used by the Dutch Royal Library for its database of printers' devices, published in CD-ROM version in Dec. 91. Experience with the project shows the need for careful preparations and the use of trained staff
