    Abstract
    Use of dynamic links from subject-based finding aids to records for electronic resources in the OPAC is suggested as one method for by-passing the OPAC search interface, thus making the library's electronic resources more accessible. This method simplifies maintenance of links to electronic resources and aids instruction by providing a single, consistent access point to them. Results of a usage study from before and after this project was completed show a consistent, often dramatic increase in use of the library's electronic resources.

    Abstract
    An important part of cataloging education in library schools is descriptive cataloging, which is concerned with preparing the descriptions, entries and name headings for library materials. Although debate occurs over the primacy of theory and principles, or practices, and whether descriptive cataloging or subject analysis should receive the most emphasis, there is general agreement that all students need instruction in the processes of cataloging. The descriptive cataloging segment of the curriculum of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Washington, is described to illustrate one approach to cataloging education.

    Abstract
    A wide diversity exists in the current practice of transliterating Cyrillic scripts for use in bibliographic records in OPACs. Without knowing which transliteration table was used, it is difficult to retrieve desired records successfully or efficiently. Explores the problems besetting 3 groups of Russian language students, at Florida University at Gainesville, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages, faced with romanized Cyrillic bibliographic records and investigates the students' ability to search the Russian records according to the LoC transliteration table. Results show the students' success and error rates before and after instruction and establish that transliteration is one of the factors limiting access by Russian language students

    Abstract
    Explores factors that have influenced library and information science education over the past two decades. Emphasis is placed on cataloging instruction and particularly cataloging as a required course. Identifies the introduction of new areas of study, corresponding curricular changes, and the nature of LIS faculty as influencing the role of cataloging in the professional education of librarians. An analysis is provided of the changing perception of the importance of cataloging in professional library education programs.

    Abstract
    This paper presents one approach to the teaching of both the basic and advanced courses in cataloging. In addressing the basic course, short-term and long-term objectives of the course are identified for four categories of students-Cataloging Specialists, General/Special Librarians, Non-Cataloging Specialists and Non-Library Information Specialists. The philosophy underlying this mode of instruction places emphasis upon group interaction and making the course enjoyable for the student, thus increasing interest while imparting more information and better preparing the four groups of students for work in organizing information. Stress is placed upon student participation and the use of realistic situations to instruct and evaluate student performance.

    The Library of Congress proudly presents its own introductory course in descriptive cataloging. Cataloging concepts is ideal for in-house training of technical services staff as well as other staff who need familiarity with standard bibliographic records. Also useful to library schools, bibliographic utilities, and other library training providers.     Abstract
    This article describes the design and development of an expert adviser to catalogue published conference proceedings. The Conference Proceeding Adviser System (CoPAS) was designed to educate novice cataloguers in creating bibliographic records for published conference proceedings as well as to improve conventional instruction in the cataloguing of conference proceedings. The development tool was Asymetrix ToolBook !!. The knowledge base of the expert system was in the domain of cataloguing published conference proceedings and consists of public and private knowledge. Public/published knowledge are the relevant AACR2R rules that wer, identified based an the nine types of published conference proceedings. Private knowledge or heuristics was elicited from three human expert cataloguers through a multiple-observation approach. The elicited personal knowledge was then modelled into a mental map of their thought processes an how to provide a bibliographic description for published conference proceedings. Based an the mental mapping of the experts, the expert adviser system was designed and developed.

    Abstract
    School libraries face many unique needs for the cataloging of audiovisual materials (AV). Searchers are relatively inexperienced, some being exposed to an online system for the first time. Librarians who create the records for these users frequently wear many hats, including bibliographic instruction, acquisitions, and management leader. Cataloging is often only one piece of their responsibilities. The users grown in school libraries will depend on the skills imparted to them by a librarian as they progress through the socio-educational system and go on to use public libraries, academic and research facilities, and corporate libraries. The skills they obtain here - knowledge of how an automated system works and how information can be mined from it - serve as a foundation for life-long learning.

    Abstract
    RDA: Resource Description and Access is a new cataloguing standard which will replace the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, which has been widely used in libraries since 1981. RDA, like AACR2, is a content standard providing guidance and instruction on how to identify and record attributes or properties of resources which are significant for discovery. However, RDA is also an implementation of the FRBR and FRAD models. The RDA element set and vocabularies are being published on the Open Metadata Registry as linked open data. RDA provides a rich vocabulary for the description of resources and for expressing relationships between them. This paper describes what RDA offers and considers the challenges and potential of linked open data in the broader framework of bibliographic control.

    The section of background papers starts most appropriately by reprinting the Statement of Principles from the 1961 Paris Conference and continues with another twelve papers of varying lengths, most written specifically for the IME ICC. For the published report the papers have been organized to follow the order of topics assigned to the Tive working groups: Working Group 1 Personal names; WG2 Corporate bodies; WG3 Seriality; WG4 Multivolume/multipart structures; and WG5 Uniform titles, GMDs. Pino Buizza and Mauro Guerrini co-author a substantial paper "Author and title access point control: On the way national bibliographic agencies face the issue forty years after the Paris Principles," which was first presented in Italian at the November 2002 workshop an Cataloguing and Authority Control in Rome. Issues that remain unresolved are which name or title to adopt, which form of the name or title, and which entry word to select, while choice of headings has become more uniform. The impact of catalogue language (meaning both the language of the cataloguing agency and of the majority of users of the catalogue) an these choices is explored by examining the headings used in ten national authority files for a full range of names, personal and corporate. The reflections presented are both practical and grounded in theory. Mauro Guerrini, assisted by Pino Buizza and Lucia Sardo, contributes a further new paper "Corporate bodies from ICCP up to 2003," which is an excellent survey of the surprisingly controversial issue of corporate bodies as authors, starting with Panizzi, Jewett, Cutter, Dziatzko, Fumagalli, and Lubetzky, through the debate at the Paris Conference, to the views of Verona, Domanovszky and Carpenter, and work under the auspices of IFLA an the Form and structure of corporate headings (FSCH) project and its Rvew, as well as a look at the archival standard ISAAR(CPF). This paper is the only one to have a comprehensive bibliography.
