    Abstract
As a constantly changing resource, the Internet poses a challenge for bibliographic instruction librarians. Until recently, there has been little effort to survey Internet users about their search behaviours or source of Internet instruction. Focuses on survey data collected at Albany University, SUNY, early in 1995. It provides information about how users learned to use the Internet (mostly by themselves), the penetration of the Internet instruction programme (only 13% of those surveyed had attended), and public awareness of both instruction and the availability of Internet terminals in the university library

    Abstract
Preparing individuals to be independent library users through bibliographic instruction in schools is essential to achieve the vision of future libraries in Singapore as expanding the nation's capacity to learn. Prior to the implementation of bibliographic instruction, school libraries should conduct strategic preparation activities in the areas of identifying programme needs, evaluating the collection, acquiring the resources, providing a budget, determining the bibliographic instruction curriculum, preparing for the technological infrastructure, scheduling of programmes and training of personnel. Discusses 3 of these aspects: evaluating the collection (using statistical analysis to identify key characteristics); preparing the technological infrastructure (computerization of the collection, providing Internet access); and determining the curriculum for bibliographic education (library orientation, library instruction on utilizing library resources, and formal courses on search strategy)

    Abstract
Discusses the value of role playing in learning and teaching and outlines its applicability to bibliographic instruction. Defines different types of role playing, including constructive role playing and explorative role playing. Explains the methodology used by the author, the different groups he practices it with, and how sessions are organized and scenarios constructed. Gives numerous examples of such scenarios

    Abstract
Past trends in reference instruction, query analysis and proloferation of reference tools classed by primary functions into a general typology anticipated the use of paradigm logic, templates, search strategies, and systematic searching in applied Artificial Intelligence research and design of expert system, especially referral and decision-support systems. The approach, methodologies, and technique employed in basic reference and subject-area reference instruction in four graduate library schools, developed first at the University of Maryland after 1976, are reviewed. The advantages and limitations of the latter are discussed to suggest the interplay of personal service, manual tools, and computerized systems for holistic reference programs. Librarians' transition to the automated tools using AI methods might be improved by introducing paradigms, typologies, strategies, and a systems approach in reference instruction for professionals and more generally in bibliographic instruction

    Abstract
Reports on a survey on the information seeking behaviour of practitioners in accounting, architecture, psychology and recreation/tourism. The aim was to improve information skills instruction programmes for students. Fewer than half of the survey respondents had discipline-specific library instruction. Practitioners identify a need for information but a low use of electronic resources. Data supports the necessity of information skills for those entering the professions. Instructions should be information centred rather than library centred. Continuing education for professionals' information finding is needed. Makes suggestions for changes in library instruction

    Abstract
Arrowsmith, a computer-assisted process for literature-based discovery, takes as input two disjoint sets of records (A, C) from the Medline database. lt produces a list of title words and phrases, B, that are common to A and C, and displays the title context in which each B-term occurs within A and within C. Subject experts then can try to find A-B and B-C title-pairs that together may suggest novel and plausible indirect A-C relationships (via B-terms) that are of particular interest in the absence of any known direct A-C relationship. The list of B-terms typically is so large that it is difficult to find the relatively few that contribute to scientifically interesting connections. The purpose of the present article is to propose and test several techniques for improving the quality of the B-Iist. These techniques exploit the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) that are assigned to each input record. A MesH-based concept of literature cohesiveness is defined and plays a key rote. The proposed techniques are tested an a published example of indirect connections between migraine and magnesium deficiency. The tests demonstrate how the earlier results can be replicated with a more efficient and more systematic computer-aided process.

    Abstract
The Agriculture Library at Kentucky University has offered library instruction in some form since 1974. Describes the changes that have taken place in the programmes since then. The university and library are now moving into information competency where the goal is that the user becomes fully competent in the appropriate system for the appropriate use. to accomplish this the programmes must be user driven, flexible, and assessment must be done to measure effectiveness

    Abstract
A 1996 survey of the 18 LIBRAS consortium libraries to find out to what degree they have achieved a synthesis between reference and bibliographic instruction. The surveyed libraries were asked 2 main items of information: a statement of philosophy on reference service and a statement of philosophy on bibliographic instruction. 11 out of 18 surveys were returned. The results indicated 2 extremes: 1. the 'teaching library,' which subsumes both services under a single philosophy and 2. the library that claims not to have any philosophies. The rest fall somewhere in between. The survey results reinforce the original belief by the researchers that philosophy statements pose problems in their construction and in their relation to day-to-day realities

    Abstract
Two liberal arts colleges in Minnesota are building an their longstanding commitment to bibliographic instruction to develop innovative information literacy programs. This article explores assumptions shared by the Earlham model of bibliographic instruction and the information literacy movement, outlines important differences, examines conditions that inhibit change, and profiles two approaches to developing information literacy programs with strong cross-campus collaboration.

    Abstract
In order to assess the extent of the integration of library instruction into the higher education curriculum in the USA, a search was made of 29 discipline-specific pedagogical journals in the ERIC database for descriptions or mentions of library resources and personnel. Of the 13,016 articles in the 29 journals, only 53 citations included some form of the word library in the ERIC record. A more in-depth study of 13 selected titles from the list was undertaken to identify articles discussing or relating to library instruction, research skills, or assignments. Results show that few articles discuss the importance of reviewing the literature, teaching the major information tools of their field, critically evaluating the published literature, or of building upon skills learned in core courses. References to bibliograhic instruction and the impact librarians can have on student research are scattered and sketchy. The study provides little evidence of the integration of the library and library instruction into the curriculum

    Abstract
Contribution to an issue devoted to assessment and accountability in reference work. Through the reference interview and bibliographic instruction, librarians have the opportunity to familiarize students with the vast power of CD-ROMs, to teach them to harness that power, and to provide them with the critical skills necessary to question whether a particular CD-ROM database is the appropriate place to find information on a certain topic. Includes specific methods for doing this

    Abstract
This annotated bibliography lists materials dealing with information literacy including instruction in the use of information resources and research and computer skills related to retrieving, using, and evaluating information. This review, the 21st to be published in RSR, includes items in English published in 1994. A few are not annotated because the compiler could not obtain copies of them for this review

    Abstract
Supports the current opinion and practice concerning extending bibliographic instruction (BI) in academic libraries to larger forms of electronic access. However, the BI model of offering isolated classes is inappropriate - it ignores the fact that information finding is best taught as part of the broader scholarly process and the reality that exposure to systems like the WWW is increasingly initiated in academic courses. Presents an argument for a team-teaching model of information finding instruction, stressing the needs of doctoral students
