    Abstract
Exploring the advantages of a simulation (rather than expert systems) approach to designing a system to relieve reference desk overload. REFSIM can simulate a reference librarian, a teacher of reference librarians and a client, singly or in combination. It has an expert system consultation mode and several Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction (ICAI) modes. The components and architecture of REFSIM are described. Details, including a sample transaction, are given for the expert system mode, wich is to be used for consultation by library clients. An overview is supplied for 2 ICAI modes, wich can be used to instruct clients or train reference librarians.

    Abstract
THESYS is based on the natural language processing of free-text databases. It yields statistically evaluated correlations between words of the database. These correlations correspond to traditional thesaurus relations. The person who has to build a thesaurus is thus assisted by the proposals made by THESYS. THESYS is being tested on commercial databases under real world conditions. It is part of a text processing project at Siemens, called TINA (Text-Inhalts-Analyse). Software from TINA is actually being applied and evaluated by the US Department of Commerce for patent search and indexing (REALIST: REtrieval Aids by Linguistics and STatistics)

    Abstract
US academic libraries were surveyed in Apr 87 to determine which types of instructional methodes and materials were used in bibliographic instruction. Results of the survey were compared to data gathered in 1979. The most sriking results show that although roughly the same number of libraries offered course-related or noncourse-related lectures in 1987 as in 79, more institutions have required bibliographic instruction sessions and/or tours. The amount of publicity, evaluation, and print and nonprint materials produced has increased during the 80s, but fewer credit courses, term paper clinics, and audiotape programmes are offered.

    Abstract
The objective of the study was to examine the effectiveness of three methods of instruction in the teaching of basic subject cataloging. Following the administration of a pretest, the sample population was assigned randomly to one of three modes of instruction. Upon completion of the instruction the students completed a posttest which measured overall achievement as well as achievement on factual knowledge and ability to solve problems. A retest was administered two weeks later. A one-way analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data from each test. The analyses determined that microcomputer programmed instruction differed significantly from television lecture and printed text in terms of each of the three scores. None of the instructional modes was significantly different in terms of retention. The findings of this study have implications for instructional programs and strategies designed to teach graduate library science students as well as implications for future instructional effectiveness research
