    Abstract
Reports results of a study that examined factors influencing the adoption and use of electronic networks by science and engineering faculty in 6 small universities in the southerneaster USA. Part of the study gathered data on the purpose, type, and extent of electronic communications. Data were gathered by mail questionnaire and by follow up site visits. Reports on 5 types of network use, electronic mail, electronic discussion groups, accessing remote databases, accessing remote computer facilities, and file transfer. For each service, data are reported for frequency of use by purpose: research, teaching administration, social and current awareness. Outlines preliminary use indicators for each service in terms of heavy and moderate use

    Abstract
A survey was conducted during 1987 to identify how online catalog users interact with various aspects of the catalog's authority control structure. Questionnaires were sent to major online catalog system vendors and to selected university libraries and networks known to have developed in-house online catalogs; additional copies were distributed to ACIG meeting participants during the ALA conference in San Francisco, June 1987. Twenty-one usable responses were received, twelve describing commercially available systems and nine from lacally developed systems.

    Abstract
This report presents the results of a survey of users who access the University of California's online union catalog, the MELVYL library system, via microcomputers with modems or connections carried through local or wide area networks. The report includes descriptive statistics on user location, status, subject interest, affiliation, in-library versus out-of-library usage patterns, need for assistance, and desire for new features

    Abstract
Reports results of a survey of the online searching techniques of 50 university students, undergraduate and graduate, using the OPAC and CD-ROM databases at the Hayden Library, Arizona State University. The type of searching, use of library staff and online help screens, exposure to library user training, and length of time at the terminal for citation versus abstract products were recorded and analyzed. Results indicate that: a balance of online help products and library staff interaction is needed when providing help for users; careful attention needs to be paid to increasing the number of terminals and connections as abstracts are added to the databases being offered on the networks; and that even with exposure to more advanced searching techniques, users till rely on simple subject searching to locate required materials

    Abstract
Current online catalogs have problems providing reasonable subject access, often resulting in searches with too few or too many hits. These problems can be improved by enhancing MARC records, building semantic networks through cross-references, and linking subject headings to classification numbers. This paper describes a pilot project to design a hypertext search engine using these principles

    Abstract
Examines the problem of a compelling online news delivery system by focusing on how mass media audiences and online users differ in their assessment of news. It employed a 2-wave USA national survey to study the perception of interactivity in mass media and computer networks and its relationship to the assessment of news. The 1st wave looked a national probability sample, ahile the 2nd targeted viewers of NBC Nightly News who responded to the show via e-mail. NBC respondents rated mass media to be less interactive, while they rated computer communication more interactive than the national sample. The NBC group also rated mass media news less important and of lower quality than did the national sample. Interactivity ratings did not predict mass media credibility assessment for either group. However, respondents who defined interactivity as cybernetic feedback or who contacted NBC by e-mail rated computer communication to be more credible than thos who did not

    Abstract
Finding information an the Web can be a much more complex search process than previously experienced an many pre-Web information retrieval systems given that finding content online does not have to happen via a search algorithm typed into a search field. Rather, the Web allows for a myriad of search strategies. Although there are numerous studies of Web search techniques, these studies often limit their focus to just one part of the search process and are not based an the behavior of the general user population, nor do they include information about the users. To remedy these shortcomings, this project looks at how peopie find information online in the context of their other media use, their general Internet use patterns, in addition to using information about their demographic background and social support networks. This article describes the methodology in detail, and suggests that a mix of survey instruments and in-person observations can yield the type of rich data set that is necessary to understand in depth the differences in people's information retrieval behavior online.

    Abstract
This research draws on longitudinal network data from an online community to examine patterns of users' behavior and social interaction, and infer the processes underpinning dynamics of system use. The online community represents a prototypical example of a complex evolving social network in which connections between users are established over time by online messages. We study the evolution of a variety of properties since the inception of the system, including how users create, reciprocate, and deepen relationships with one another, variations in users' gregariousness and popularity, reachability and typical distances among users, and the degree of local redundancy in the system. Results indicate that the system is a small world characterized by the emergence, in its early stages, of a hub-dominated structure with heterogeneity in users' behavior. We investigate whether hubs are responsible for holding the system together and facilitating information flow, examine first-mover advantages underpinning users' ability to rise to system prominence, and uncover gender differences in users' gregariousness, popularity, and local redundancy. We discuss the implications of the results for research on system use and evolving social networks, and for a host of applications, including information diffusion, communities of practice, and the security and robustness of information systems.

    Abstract
This paper describes a study of the language used by undergraduate engineering students engaged in a civil engineering laboratory. Learner's concepts and relationships in the area of soil consolidation were elicited in order to provide an understanding of the structural knowledge of novices and compare it with the knowledge structures of a human expert and a thesaurus tool. Concept maps and pathfinder networks were used to visualise and analyse the resultant knowledge structures of novice learners, expert, and tool. Results show that there is little similarity between the knowledge structures of the novice, the expert, and the tool.

    Abstract
The degree of variability in the percentage of subject searching in an online public access catalog (OPAC) among branch libraries of one university was studied. A full semester's worth of transactions was analyzed, not sampled. The time units used were hour of the day, day of the week, and week of the semester. The findings show that subject searching varies from a low of 22% to a high of 74% over the hours of a day. Variability for the days of the week ranged from 17% to 64%, and for the weeks of the semester variability ranged from 12% to 70%. Valuable management information on the utilization of the OPAC within each brach library and among all the branch libraries is provided through numerous charts and graphs.
