    Abstract
The article provides background information on the processing of Arabic materials using a combination of local and modified cataloging rules and the creation of the Arabic card catalog at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals Library (KFUPM). It also gives a brief history of KFUPM library automation and then presents various options considered for developing the Arabized version of DOBIS/LIBIS. Finally, the functions and features of the Arabic online catalog are described

    Abstract
Reports a survey conducted in April 1997 of 136 Japanese WWW and Telnet OPACs from the persepctive of their functions and user interfaces. These included: types of searchable files; access points; kinds of displays; login commands; search methods; Boolean operation; help functions; search history; and browsing of indexed terms. Results indicate a sharp rise in the number of WWW OPACs and problems with the provision of functions and user interfaces by Japanese WWW OPACs

    Abstract
Paper presented at the 1992 IATUL seminar in Tallinn, estonia: 'Universal Availability of Publications in Science and Technology including those on the history and philosophy of grey literature' on UAP policy and practice. Discusses surveys conducted at the Helsinki Univ. of Technology Library analysing the use of the online catalogue. Covers the Internordic Study 'Monitoring the Online Catalogues of the Nordic Technical University Libraries', whose aim was the promotion of end-user accessibility to information as part of a training program. Users' search behaviour was observed during the course on the library's TENTTU information retrieval system. Analyses the transaction log files of end users. Presents statistics on the distribution of search elements in free text and field codes and the use of Boolean operators. Comments on a software package enabling analysis of the interaction between the system and the end user. This may be useful to evaluate training programs

    Abstract
Most research libraries own several large microform sets, such as Russian History and Culture, Landmarks of Science, and Early English Books. Library catalogue access to these collections is often inadequate, forcing users and staff to rely on printed indexes or guides. Cooperative cataloguing efforts have produced MARC records for many of these sets. The records have becojme widely available through OCLC's Major Microforms Project and RLIN's Set Processing. How can libraries economically acquire and load these records into their local catalogues and what problems and benefits can they expect? This article describes the experience of the University of Alberta Library, which has acquired, processed, and batch loaded (we call it "bulk loaded") over 96,000 records for ten microform sets.

    Abstract
This article provides an overview of computer based catalogue systems designed for use by library clients, seeing present day 'discovery systems' on the same trajectory as the older 'online public access catalogues' (OPACs) which they are gradually replacing, both in technical development and their approach to client use scenarios. It traces the history of the OPAC/discovery system from its origins in the library automation of the 1960s through to the present and discusses the main technical standards which have formed its development. The article goes on to consider questions relating to the usability of electronic library catalogues and highlights semiotic and ethical issues inherent to their design. It concludes with reflections on the future of the OPAC/discovery system in an information universe apparently dominated by the internet search engine.
