    Abstract
Identifies the value of interlibrary cooperation and the extent to which Conspectus can be of service to it, briefly outlining the origins of Conspectus in the 1980s in the USA under the Research Libraries Group and later the Association of Research Libraries. Describes Conspectus as a subject hierarchical grouping of library book collections, arranged in levels as: 25 divisions, 250 categories and 5.500 subjects. Hierarchical notation follows the LC classmark pattern. Explains the use of a numeric coding on a scale of 0-5 to indicate the level of coverage in any required subject for libraries participating in Conspectus, as well as coding to indicate the language in which the required material is written
