    Abstract
The successful development of computer technology for automating Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CIK) vernacular scripts and the completion of the RLIN CJK system in 1983 marked the beginning of online operations of East Asian libraries in North America and helped keep them in the mainstream of library automation. The RLIN CJK system and the subsequently developed OCLC CJK system are building CJK bibliographic databases which have made East Asian cooperative cataloging and resources sharing a true reality. The emergence, features, current conditions, and future plans of the two CJK systems are discussed. So are the automated programs of national libraries in East Asia in terms of their building national databases for vernacular materials and designing and producing national MARCs for exchange of bibliographic information among libraries. The outlook of cooperation between the CJK systems and international exchange of CJK bibliographic information is also examined.

    Abstract
Extracts from the official report of a study investigating the situation in French public libraries, The main reason for this evaluation is th proposed review of the role of the Bibliothèque Nationale, in relation to developing the role of France in the world information market. The results reported here cover the production and diffusion of bibliographic information. The overall picture is of a lack of coordination between products available and user needs, failure to establish standards for formats and for information technology equioment. The concluding recommendations emphaisis the need for coordinating initiatives by the various organisations involved in producing/diffusing bibliographic information, and establishing common standards to allow free exchange between bibliographic networks. Further studies are in hand to establish guidelines for future policies in more specialised library sectors.

    Abstract
US academic libraries were surveyed in Apr 87 to determine which types of instructional methodes and materials were used in bibliographic instruction. Results of the survey were compared to data gathered in 1979. The most sriking results show that although roughly the same number of libraries offered course-related or noncourse-related lectures in 1987 as in 79, more institutions have required bibliographic instruction sessions and/or tours. The amount of publicity, evaluation, and print and nonprint materials produced has increased during the 80s, but fewer credit courses, term paper clinics, and audiotape programmes are offered.

    Abstract
This article presents a view of the structure of libraries and bibliographic databases in Norway and how they deal with duplicate records. Existing library systems are discussed in some detail. However, emphasis is placed on what the author sees as the picture of future library systems in Norway. It is important to note that Norwegian libraries are small when compared to those in other parts of the world.

    Abstract
Summarises the findings of apilot project at the Austrian Planning centre for Academic Libraries to assess the ÖZDB-Compactsystem on CD-ROM, the first system for serials on CD-ROM to be used in the German speaking countries. The system makes available 47,713 titles from Vienna, Graz, Linz and Salzburg university Libraries locally on an Apple Macintosh computer. The firm was able to provide information about CD-ROM and to supply the hardware for the 6-week project. The whole programme was prepared centrally. It was possible to call up records both by title and by institution responsible, and of the desired degree of specificity. The systems allows the additional advantages option of CD-PAC (Compact Disc Public Access Catalogue) wich can be used in conjunction with the already established BIBOS system.

    Abstract
Lecture given at the meeting of the committee on interloans and union catalogues at the 20th Austrian Librarian's Conference. The contents of the Österreichischen Zeitschriftendatenbank (ÖZDB) will be transferred into the data base of the Austrian Libraries' Cooperative, which uses the BIBOS system. Framework conditions of procedures have been established. The 3 data files of ÖZDB are linked logically and are redundance free; they contained over 660.000 entries in 1986. In 1988 there were 980 participants in the data base, mainly Austrian academic libraries. On-line services are included. Interim measures have been recommended for the transition period.

    Abstract
The database of the Research Libraries Group's Research Libraries Information Network contains some 25 million records in all USMARC formats for bibliographic and authorities data, as well as a number of additional files for specialized data. These records include source data from the Library of Congress and other national bibliographic agencies, and records contributed by RLG member institutions, and are used both for technical processing and in support of RLG's cooperative programs. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Cyrillic vernacular records are included in the central database; work on Hebrew is in progress. Future developments will result in the addition of diverse kinds of data, including nonbibliographic data, to RLIN.

    Abstract
Australian libraries have kept up with the latest technology and innovation in cataloging. The Australian Bibliographic Network is a shared cataloging-based national bibliographic utility. This essay delves into the relationships of the ABN, the Australian National Bibliography, AUSMARC, and the role of the Australian National Library in the creation of these elements of computerized cataloging in that country. It also discusses some of the policies and procedures utilized by Australian libraries in their automated cataloging environment, as well as looking at some of the environmental attitudes arising from the change to automated cataloging. Finally, the essay concludes with an outline of some of the similarities and differences between the AUSMARC and USMARC formats.

    Abstract
Account of the preliminary stages in the Bibliothèque National project to produce data from the national bibliography, the Bibliographie de France, on CD-ROM. The pilot disc was produced in collaboration with the British Library, using software developed by Online Computers, and tested out in 60 establishments in 1988. Results of this experiment showed up problems in installation, and user dissatisfaction with the indexing system, formats, headings, and instruction manual. Overall, however, user feedback indicated a good market for CD-ROM, as a complement to other sources of bibliographical data. The 1st full edition, with 380.000 records covering 1975-89, was produced in May 89, and a 2nd edition is scheduled for Oct 89. Discussions are currently in hand to develop European standards for CD-ROM, to be used by all national libraries.

    Abstract
This article describes three important bibliographic databases in Latin America, two of which have been created by national library networks. In the networks shared cataloging has become increasingly important. The databases contain much cataloging information not available outside Latin America. During the last two years the national libraries of Venezuela and Chile have exchanged their data and furnished it to a library in Colombia which is beginning the automation process. The article describes the formation of the networks from the point of view of database building, and examines prospects for increasing exchanges of data in the region.
