    Abstract
Extracts from the official report of a study investigating the situation in French public libraries, The main reason for this evaluation is th proposed review of the role of the Bibliothèque Nationale, in relation to developing the role of France in the world information market. The results reported here cover the production and diffusion of bibliographic information. The overall picture is of a lack of coordination between products available and user needs, failure to establish standards for formats and for information technology equioment. The concluding recommendations emphaisis the need for coordinating initiatives by the various organisations involved in producing/diffusing bibliographic information, and establishing common standards to allow free exchange between bibliographic networks. Further studies are in hand to establish guidelines for future policies in more specialised library sectors.

    Abstract
Describes Jules Maciet's collection in the Bibliothèque des arts décoratifs, one of Paris's most accessible specialist art libraries, which offers the researcher an eclectic range of visual materials inclusing rare prints and photographs. It is an exhaustive collection still classified today according to the original system. An index of engravers, publishers and printsellers, and sources serves artists, researchers and other users

    Abstract
Examines the responsibilities and obligations of libraries in an electronic environment. These include: ensuring access, mostly free, to the Internet; training the public to use it; developing research and navigational tools; using the Internet as a gateway; participating in the organization of data; providing access to the documentary heritage; collection development; forging links with other database producers; providng a forum for dissemination projects; speaking out against censorship; and involving users and the local community in the development of databases

    Abstract
To illustrate the theoretical analysis presented by J. Maniez published in Documentaliste 34(1997) nos.4/5 presents some concrete examples drawn for experience of the difficulties increasingly faced in trying to make different indexing languages compatible. Various types of problems may be considered: comparing semantic terms and relationships that compose indexing languages, setting standards for writing and vocabulary, and opposing pre and post coordinated descriptors. Proposes several solutions and discusses the need for further applied research in this area

    Abstract
Developed to meet the needs of the library at the Université Laval, the Répertoire de Vedettes-matière is used by many institutions and is recognized as the Canadian standard by the National Library of Canada. The Répertoire also supported the creation of a union catalogue network and its use in libraries abroad, especially the Bibliothèque Nationale in France, confirms, this status and guarantees its continuing role in the increasing standardization of subject headings used in the French-speaking world. Concludes the history of the Répertoire and the major events that shaped its progress

    Abstract
French library presence on the Internet includes the National Library of France (BNF), universities, major research establishments and some large public libraries. Smaller public libraries are beginning to appear, usually as part of the parent institution's site. Content usually consists of information about the library, with links to related sites. Few libraries offer catalogues. Internet addresses are given for library and library related sites discussed

    Abstract
Summarises of a selection of the presentations and workshops under one of the main themes at the Association of Swiss Libraries and Librarians congress held in Yverdon, Sept 1998. Sessions covered comprise: workshop on stories in libraries (history of the tradition in French libraries and criteria for selecting material); oral and written traditions (presentation on continuing existence of various schools of interpretation e.g. mythological, anthropological, in relation to the importance of individual contact); and listening - reading - writing (presentation on links between these 3 forms of communication in the context of the challenge for libraries in the field of children's education)

    Abstract
UNIMARC is widely used in French libraries for internal cataloguing, but in versions that differ significantly from the official IFLA form, while the BNF uses its own version for exporting bibliographic information. This situation has in part been created by software suppliers who produce modified versions for small libraries but without precisely detailing the variations. Problems will inevitably arise when such libraries change software or join cataloguing networks

    Abstract
Textual semiotics and cognitive psychology are advocated to model several types of documentary analysis. Proposes a theoretical model which combines elements from the 2 disciplines. Thanks to the addition of values of properties pertaining to different semiotic systems to the primary and secondary texts, one can retrieve the units and the characteristics valued by a group of indexers or by one individual. The cognitive studies of the experts confirm or complete the textual analysis. Examples from the findings obtained by the statistic-linguistic analysis of 2 corpora illustrate the usefulness of the methodology, especially for the conception of expert systems to assist whatever kind of reading

    Abstract
The retroconversion programme of municipal library catalogues, part of a project of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, is entering its final phase. The heritage and local collections catalogues of 26 libraries have been converted. The final stage of data capture for the catalogues of 30 more libraries began in Feb 96. While it is too early to take stock of the process, the retroconversion has shown the variety, abundance and uniqeness of the collections and modernization leads professionals to a radically different approach to the access to these materials

    Abstract
The project AUTHOR aims to give access to cataloguers at the international level and in UNIMARC, to the name authority files (names of persons and corporate bodies) of the participating national libraries (Belgium, Spain, France, Portugal United Kingdom). A test bed platform was defined which will be opened to other national libraries together with a target technical architecture taking into account and promoting 2 other European Projects: UseMARCON and EUROPAGATE. The project is part of the Forum CoBRAs (Computerised Bibliographic Records Actions) activities financed by the Libraries Programme of the Directorate General XIII of the Commission of the European Communities

    Abstract
RAMEAU, an encyclopedic authorities list, uses a precoordinated indexing language with precise and constricting syntax, which aims to standardise subject access. Based originally in 1986 on the National Library subject heading list, it is used in all French university libraries and in many other libraries in France and abroad. New terms are added in response to user proposals. In 2000 RAMEAU will be fused with the future university systems

    Abstract
Computerized cataloguing is widely used in university libraries in France and tends to involve the networking of catalogues according to one of 3 approved sources: SibilFrance; OCLC; and BN Opale. Examines the ways in which libraries chose their system, the importance of each of the 3 systems, and their productive capacity in relation to their acquisition. Results of a 1992 survey of a sample of 43 French university libraries tends to prove that the cost of these systems are less dependent on the source itself than on the organization of work and staff

    Abstract
Users of international libraries, such as the UN library in Geneva, are themselves highly skilled in using electronic information sources and expect to have access to the most up to date equipment. The librarian/user relationship is thus cooperative, with the user often more expert in using new tools than the librarian. There is no formal network of international libraries, which stand outside overall information policies, though libraries such as those of the UN coordinate standards and activities. The role of the librarian in this context, as exemplified by the Genova library, embraces 3 functions: producer (creation of databases and bibliographies eg those of the Department of Human Rights); trainer (continuing education for both colleagues and users); and mediator (making information and documentation available to the public eg CD-ROM and video publications of archive material celebrating the UN's 50th anniversary). With increasing use of the Internet and the personalisation of information, the library is becoming more like a cafe, offering an information space for individualistic users
