    Abstract
Subject classifications and thesauri have become more important than ever in the Web environment. Efforts made to organize information into subject classifications, or taxonomies, offer users the opportunity to substantially improve the effectiveness of their search and retrieval activities. This article continues earlier research an the development of a new definition of the field of information science and the creation of a "map" of the field showing subjects central to it and their relationships to those an the periphery. A case study describes the creation of a new classification structure (taxonomy) for the Information Science Abstracts (ISA) database, aiming to reflect and accommodate the rapid and continued technological and market changes affecting the information industry today and into the future. Based an a sample of some 3,000 ISA abstracts, two validation experiments were conducted by a three-member team comprising a database editor, a reference librarian, and an abstractor-indexer, who represent three of the major communities within the information science field. In the first experiment, the sample of abstracts was classified according to the proposed new taxonomy; alter analysis of the data and revision of the taxonomy, it was revalidated and fine tuned in a second experiment. Indexer consistency measures obtained in this study were significantly higher than those found in previous studies. The taxonomy resulting from this research employs the concepts, definition, and map of information science previously developed. It presents them in an organized hierarchical view of the field and thus makes a significant contribution to information science.

Describes the National Libraries Project on CD-ROM which involves 7 European national libraries which is developing national bibliographies on CD-ROM. The British Library has produced its national bibliographies, BNB on CD-ROM, and Boston Spa Serials. The British Library General Catalogue of Printed Books to 1975 on CD-ROM is being published by Saztec and distributed by Chadwyck-Healey. Lists other national library CD-ROM products which have been developed using the ONline Computer Systems Inc., software used by the British Library

    Abstract
The amount of scientific papers is growing together with the development of science itself; but, although there is an unprecedented availability of large citation indexes, some daily activities of researchers remain time-consuming and poorly supported. In this paper, we present Visual Bibliographies (VisualBib), a real-time visual platform, designed using a zz-structure-based model for linking metadata and a narrative, visual approach for showing bibliographies. VisualBib represents a usable, advanced, and visual tool, which simplifies the management of bibliographies, supports a core set of bibliographic tasks, and helps researchers during complex analyses on scientific bibliographies. We present the variety of metadata formats and visualization methods, proposing two use case scenarios. The maturity of the system implementation allowed us two studies, for evaluating both the effectiveness of VisualBib in providing answers to specific data analysis tasks and to support experienced users during real-life uses. The results of the evaluation are positive and describe an effective and usable platform.

    Abstract
Extracts from the official report of a study investigating the situation in French public libraries, The main reason for this evaluation is th proposed review of the role of the Bibliothèque Nationale, in relation to developing the role of France in the world information market. The results reported here cover the production and diffusion of bibliographic information. The overall picture is of a lack of coordination between products available and user needs, failure to establish standards for formats and for information technology equioment. The concluding recommendations emphaisis the need for coordinating initiatives by the various organisations involved in producing/diffusing bibliographic information, and establishing common standards to allow free exchange between bibliographic networks. Further studies are in hand to establish guidelines for future policies in more specialised library sectors.

    Abstract
Reviews BIBLINK, an EC funded project that is attempting to create links between national bibliographic agencies and the publishers of electronic resources. The project focuses on the flow of information, primarily in the form of metadata, between publishers and national libraries. Describes related work carried out by the Library of Congress with regard to its Electronic CIP Program. Includes studies of metadata formats in use and an investigation of the potential for format conversion

    Abstract
To assist the IFLA Bibliography Section in gathering more comprehensive information on selection criteria used by national bibliographic agencies in preparing their countries' national bibliography, the Section crafted a survey that the Section chair and the Oslo Programme chair sent electronically and in print form. With the exponential availability of Web and other digital resources, the Section felt a critical need to address how national bibliographic agencies were incorporating these resources into the national bibliography. In preparation for the Section's Programme during the 71st IFLA World Library and Information Congress, the survey was sent to forty-four national libraries and bibliographic agencies in Europe. We restricted dissemination of the survey to European countries, in line with the Section's strategy to plan its programmes in ways that focused on what was happening in the area of the world where the IFLA Congress was being convened. This paper gives an analysis of the data submitted in the responses.

    Abstract
The techniques and approaches fostered in the first half of this century by what was called the 'New Bibliography' have spread throughout the world, developing and expanding in association with bodies such as the Bibliographical Society. The essays specially commissioned for this volume take 'New Bibliography' into the twenty-first century. They survey bibliographic and textual studies in some thirty fields, and include discussions of major issues and developments. Areas covered include manuscript studies and the analysis of handwriting; the physical characteristics of the book - its paper, type, and binding; enumerative and descriptive bibliography; incunabula, cartography, book illustration, book catalogues, and the Stationers' Company; bibliographical developments in the history of science, and in many countries - France, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the British Provincial Book Trade, Japan and the Orient, Australia and New Zealand; developments in the theory and practice of editing texts (including biblical texts); the history of the book; and the implications of the computer for bibliography. An important feature of these essays is that each makes proposals for future research, ensuring the vitality of bibliography in the next half-century. Appearing at the time of the Bibliographical Society's centenary, the collection provides a landmark, taking stock of developments in what has become a vast and vital area of study, and mapping out its future parameters.

    Abstract
The Working group on Guidelines for (electronic) national bibliographies has started the work with an analysis of users and use of national bibliographies (NB). In addition to the well known importance of NB for libraries and librarians, other users and their requirements were identified. The results are presented and discussed; both existing and potential users and use were taken into account. The group will continue the work by specifying the functionality to support the various needs of different users.

    Abstract
More and more libraries are providing access to Web resources through OCLC's (Online Computer Resource Center) Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC) and, by extension, OCLC's WorldCat database. The ability to use a database to its maximum potential depends upon understanding what a database contains and the guidelines for its construction. This study examines the characteristics of Web resources in CORC in terms of their subject matter, the source of the content, publication patterns, and the units of information chosen for representation in the database. The majority of the 414 resources in the sample belonged to the social sciences. Academic libraries and government agencies contributed more than 90% of the records for resources in the sample. Using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2d edition (AACR2) definitions for publication patterns that are part of the upcoming 2002 amendments reveals that nearly half of the sample fell into the category of integrating resources. Identifying units of representation of the resources described was more difficult. Existing definitions for Web units in development are not adequate to describe all of the resources in the sample. In addition, there is wide variability in the units of representation chosen for inclusion by the libraries contributing records, resulting in little predictability in what units of information might be found in the database.

    Abstract
The 1991 IFLA programme given by the section on bibliography presented the theme that national bibliography becomes part of national memeory by recording the publications of the nation. Examines whether the widely distributed publications of popular culture are 'forgotten' by national bibliography. Considers the bibliographic control of newspapers, mass market publications and erotica in the US bibliographic control system. For the last 2 categories, searches selected titles in the OCLC database where many publications were found with wide distribution but recorded by few or no libraries. Popular culture materials should be recorded in national bibliographies to provide a more extended and historically accurate national memory

    Abstract
This article attempts to present a case for a centralized automated national bibliographic system and introduces the idea of cost-benefit analysis relating to this bibliographic common cause.
