    Abstract
Subject access to monographs through online public access catalogs (OPACs) has always been a major concern for large research and/or academic libraries. Academic library practice of providing subject access to monographs has proven inadequate, especially in the case of composite works. Many techniques have been proposed to enhance subject treatment of monographs in OPACs. This article briefly reviews these efforts in the past and presents the case of adding Tables of Contents as one of the Most useful and probably also one of the Most costeffective ways of improving subject access to Monographs in an academic environment.

    Abstract
By the mid 1980s online bibliographic systems retrieved excessively large sets. Conversely, with standard Boolean systems, searches retrieved commonly nothing or too few records. In Nov. 92, 32% of searches yielded nothing from a retrieval set averaging 98. Offers solutions to these problems using MELVYL as a case study. Examines how non topical data such as date, language and location of document can improve topical searches. Explains OASIS and front end phototyping. Discusses adaptive retrieval, strategic commands, expanded retrieval and developments of OASIS. Covers aggregation of filtered sets, related terms, automatic progressive truncation, the SUMMARIZE LIBRARIES command, filing and filtering and collection analysis

    Abstract
An increasing number of library user studies are employing ethnographic techniques as an alternative to more traditional qualitative methods such as surveys. Such techniques, however, are only beginning to see significant application to catalog user studies. Beginning with a discussion of the applied ethnographic method and its current usage within the field of Library and Information Science research, this article will assess methods that have traditionally been applied to studies of catalog users and present the case for the potential of an ethnographic approach for future catalog evaluation and design.

    Abstract
There's something magical about interface design. The research done to determine user behavior that leads to design decisions is positively fascinating. This time round we have a group at Penn State testing the proficiency of users on their brand new OPAC. The users were divided into two groups, "experienced" and "first-time". Results confirm other studies in this area, namely, that when confronting an OPAC, users both experienced and not, assume they're in front of something similar to Google. They go for keywords by default, expect results ranked by relevancy (as opposed to chronology), make no use of Boolean Operators, have no idea of what information is actually indexed, and lack the curiosity or time to "learn the system". "We can either abandon this population," the author stresses, "or design systems that do not require expert knowledge to be used effectively.

    Abstract
The primary objective of the present study was to exmine whether readers conducting bibliographic searches in ALEPH - Israel's research library network - tend to search only within the OPAC of the library within which they are working or whether they access the remote OPACs of other libraries. The ALEPH network has a dezentralized database. Therefore, it was possible to examine this question because each library has its own access code and each database can be searched separately. The data were collected by means of a one-page questionnaire lefr beside each terminal in the library of the Graduate School of Library and Archive Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem during an entire academic years. results of analysis of the data collected in this survey are presented in 6 tables

    Abstract
The 10 contributions are concerned with the nature, composition, and implementation of the cognitive interaction between the human and the computer, through the development of intelligent interfaces. The topic is addressed from a variety of theoretical, empirical, and design perspectives, by authors who are currently carrying out research in interface design and related issues. The text is organised into sections on theory, design, and case studies, together with a critique of the intelligent interface concept. Relevant recent advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, psychophysiology and computer science are emphasized

    Abstract
Reviews studies of users of OPACs focusing on the research methodology of librarians. Surveys and questionnaires, interviews, observation, controlled experiment and transaction log analysis were used with varying degrees of expertise and success in academic public libraries with a variety of user populations. Poor methodology due to lack of training and funding sharply limit their usefulness in most cases

Discusses the retrieval of music materials within the context of OPACs, the characteristics of the music collection. Considers system and interface requirements and the problems attendant upon known item searching in an area where multiple manifestations of a single work are the norm. Covers: indexing and searching; Boolean searching capabilities; and the user-system dialogue, displays, and user assistance text. Describes the specific case of ILLINET Online statewide OPAC for Illinois and the music subsystem of the OPAC

    Abstract
Provides information on the characteristics of 5 online catalogue systems in 5 academic libraries in the austin, Texas and North Texas, USA, and their use by Korean students at University of North Texas, USA, in order to assist system managers in the selection of online catalogues. Proposes recommendations when designing, adopting, or managing a new online catalogue system. Topics for further studies on the characteristics of online systems and their use are also suggested

    Abstract
While much has been written about OPACs in college and university libraries, few OPAC studies from community colleges have appeared in the literature. Provides a background to the work of Nassau Community College, Garden City, New York (NCC) and its library. Describes the NCC OPAC and presents a study of its use covering user profiles; user success; and user strategies and patterns of use

    Abstract
Reports results of a study to evaluate the OPACs in 12 Canadian academic libraries, using a checklist of functional capabilities and interface features of an ideal OPAC system, to serve as an evaluation standard or benchmark for evaluating the strenghts and weaknesses of the OPACs. Findings suggest that, among the 10 areas evaluated, screen displays is the best developed area, and subject search aids is the weakest. Identifies possible directions for the future development of OPACs and suggests areas for future OPAC research

    Abstract
The project explored the ways in which the online catalogue contributes, or does not contribute to the success of library users. Key issues examined included: whether students are really getting appropriate assistance when using the online catalogue; the most common searching successes and failures observed for people using the online catalogue without staff assistance; and the effectiveness of online catalogue use by librarians providing reference assistance compared to other sources (reference books, electronic and printed indexes). Reviews relevant studies of online catalogues and reference success and describes the methodology and results of 3 different online catalogue studies: the Reference Assessment Survey; the online catalogue study of unassisted users; and the document availability study; all conducted at San José State University Library; California, using the Reference Transaction Assessment Instrument. Considers the implications of the results for reference practice and study methodology

    Abstract
Research on the use of online catalogs has challenged many assumptions about the behavior of library users. It has demonstrated that many of the patterns of behavior observed in the use of card catalogs were adaptions to the card technology; often behavioral patterns are different in an online environment. These studies have indicated that patrons prefer online catalogs and use them more, but they also show inadequacies in bibliographic practice, especially in the area of subject access.
