- Abstract
- Examines the place of CD-ROMs in academic libraries and in particular the use of network solutions to widen the access to these services. A questionnaire survey was undertaken of academic libraries in the UK, Eire, USA and Canada and the results analysed. 9 UK libraries were selected as case studies for more detailed examinations of the issues involved: in particular the management issues. These case studies were selected to cover a variety of experiences and circumstances. A parallel survey looked at CD-ROM publishing and a questionnaire survey was sent to publishers but the response was not as good as the previous survey. Trends in CD-ROM publishing, including the future of CD-ROM in the views of the publishers and of librarians, suggest that other electronic media may replace CD-ROM for some applications but that CD-ROM is likely to remain a part of hybrid information systems. The networking of CD-ROM services is constrained by the cost, by technical complexity, and by restrictive licensing agreements. Future electronic information services may include regionally or nationally mounted databases accessible over the Internet or over SuperJanet in the UK. - Abstract
- Policy paper prepared by the Centre for Communication and Information Studies, Westminster University, London, for the British Library Board. Reports the results of a study of changes in the provision of electronic information to end users in UK academic libraries, conducted by the Centre for Communication and Information Studies, Westminster University, during the period 1988 to 1992. The period has seen a shift in expenditure from external online information services to CD-ROM, with over 70% of universities either planning or running local CD-ROM networks. There is some evidence of a modest amount of media substitution from printed information services to electronic, including a decline in online expenditure. The Bath Information and Data Service end user service has had a similar impact on alternative access media. The commercial online host market has eluded the end user market, being the most exclusive reserve of librarian mediators. Questions arising from the study include: how appropriate to the users' needs are the new networked services; what feedback and evaluation procedures are required; what is the nature of the support role of libraries in these changing circumstances; what additional resources; how and by whom are end user services to be financed; and how is wider access to database services impacting on ancillary services such as document delivery? In response, CCIS has formulated a research programme to extend the current quantitative work in the area of evaluating end user needs, activities and preferences in relation to information sources

- Abstract
- The study of subject access to UK academic library catalogues was based on a questionnaires end out during Summer 1991. 86 out of a possible 110 questionnaires were returned. All universities and polytechniques now have OPACs which are progressing well towards comprehensive bibliographical coverage of their libraries' stocks. The MARC format is now widely used. Subject access strategies are usually based on either Library of Congress Subject Headings or inhouse indexing systems but almost half the OPACs studies have no separate subject searching option based on subject indexing is expensive and future subject indexing strategies are best based on pre-existing controlled vocabularies. Strategies authority control is essential. A limited range of software strategies is recommended including the need to limit search results

- Abstract
- This report presents the results of desk-top based study of projects and initiatives in the area of linking and mapping subject tools. While its goal is to provide areas of further study for cross-language subject access in the European Library, and specifically the national libraries of the Ten New Member States, it is not restricted to cross-language mappings since some of the tools used to create links across thesauri or subject headings in the same language may also be appropriate for cross-language mapping. Tools reviewed have been selected to represent a variety of approaches (e.g. subject heading to subject heading, thesaurus to thesaurus, classification to subject heading) reflecting the variety of subject access tools in use in the European Library. The results show that there is no single solution that would be appropriate for all libraries but that parts of several initiatives may be applicable on a technical, organisational or content level.

This overview/summarization will provide information on major areas of KO. Coverage in this overview may not be completely exhaustive, but it succinctly showcases major developments in the area of KO. - Abstract
- Presents the findings of the South Ayrshire Libraries OPen Learning and the Internet project, Sep 1997 to Oct 1998. The objective was to demonstrate how open learning materials available on the Internet could be integrated with the provision of local open learning resources to provide an enhanced learning environment in public libraries. The main areas of concentration within the project were information skills support to public library users and the provision of WWW based independent materials to learners. The organisation and retrieval of Web based resources for local use was a major issue throughout the project. Recommends the adoption of Dublin Core metadata standards, the connection of databases of resources with searchable wen pages, and the development of thesauri of terms used to index the Web based resources locally. Sstaff training, and the new skills which will need to be developed, were identified as issues. Cost was also identified as a related issue, extending to issues such as access to open learning material and the Internet
