    Abstract
OPAC Network in Europe (ONE) is a project aimed at providing users with better ways to access library OPACs and national catalogues and which will stimulate and facilitate internetworking between libraries in Europe. The project is based on SR/Z39.50 standards which enable users to search widely different computer systems across networks and offer end users the promise of greater ease of use through a solution to the proliferation of different user interfaces to library catalogues

    Abstract
Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries exploit the power of human vision and spatial cognition to help individuals mentally organize and electronically access and manage large and complex information spaces. They draw on progress in the field of information visualization and seek to shift the users' mental load from slow reading to faster perceptual processes such as visual pattern recognition.Based on two workshops, the book presents an introductory overview as well as a closing listing of the top ten problems in the area by the volume editors. Also included are 16 thoroughly reviewed and revised full papers organized in topical sections on visual interfaces to documents, document parts, document variants, and document usage data; visual interfaces to image and video documents; visualization of knowledge domains; cartographic interfaces to digital libraries; and a general framework.

    Abstract
Describes ONE, OPAC Network in europe, a project supported by the EU Telematics programme and based in Norway. There are 15 partners in the project from 8 European countries, representing different types of institutions, such as national libraries, software houses, museums and universities. The main aim is to create an operational network service for all types of users of libraries in Europe, using the Z39.50 protocol, and to establish Implementors' Agreements for libraries. The project is planned to last for 30 months, and is divided into 5 phases

    Abstract
Eastern Europe is a complex area for which there are not adequate Library of Congress subject heading period subdivisions. This article offers additional period subdivisions, with justifications, for all the countries and some regions of Eastern Europe, excluding the Soviet Union. Covered are: Europe, Eastern; Czechoslovakia (and three regions); Germany (East); Hungary; Poland; Galicia; Balkan Peninsula; Albania; Bulgaria; Romania; and Yugoslavia (and six regions).

    Abstract
Addresses the technical and policy issues in the development of an international infrastructure for the flow of information by studying the emerging national information infrastructures in 6 post communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The study consisted of interviews with over 300 library managers, computing network administrators, government policy makers and other information professionals conducted in 1993 and 1994 in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, plus a 1994 mail survey of research libraries in these countries. After presenting the principles under which the G-7 leading industrialized countries have agreed to collaborate on constructing a Global Information Infrastructure (GII), presents examples from the survey on how the GII pronciples might be addressed. Results of the longitudinal study were reported at greater length in the Proceedings of the 58th Meeting of the ASIS, 1995, S.27-34

    Abstract
The introduction of digital resources has not only had considerable impact on the role of libraries in the information society, but it has also had a remarkable effect on back office procedures, i.e. on the way the library is organised. This article presents a case study of a reengineering process at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) in Munich, Germany, the central regional library of the State of Bavaria and one of the largest academic research libraries in Europe with local, regional and supraregional responsibilities. Due to the multiple roles of this library, it was particularly important not only to bridge the gap between traditional and new material, but also to create a flexible organisational platform for the various tasks at the different levels indicated.

    Abstract
In 1946, the Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, started using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in French by creating an authority list, Répertoire de Vedettes-matière (RVM), whose first published edition appeared in 1962. In the 1970s, the most important libraries in Canada with an interest in French-language cataloging - the Université de Montréal, the Bibliothèque Nationale du Canada, and the Bibliothèque Nationale du Quebec - forged partnerships with the Université Laval to support RVM. In 1974, the Bibliothèque Publique d'Information, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France became the first library in Europe to adopt RVM. During the 1980s, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) created an authority list, RAMEAU, based upon RVM, which is used by numerous French libraries of all types. The major libraries in Luxembourg adopted RVM in 1985. Individual libraries in Belgium also use RVM, often in combination with LCSH. The spread of RVM in the francophone world reflects the increasing importance of the pragmatic North American tradition of shared cataloging and library cooperation. RVM and its European versions are based upon literary warrant and make changes to LCSH to reflect the specific cultural and linguistic meeds of their user communities. While the users of RVM seek to harmonize the various versions, differences in terminology and probably syntax are inevitable.

    Abstract
Traces the history of the establishment of OCLC in Europe, including problems facing European libraries using OCLC, as well as the benefits of OCLC. OCLC is now widely used in Europe and the use of services there may be more advanced than developments in the USA. Expresses the hope that increasingly closer relations will develop between european and US users, as they work together toward universal access

    Abstract
Despite witnessing the enormous success of cooperative cataloguing programmes in Europe and North America, libraries in Saudi Arabia and other Arabian Gulf states have made no concerted afforts in initiating similar programmes. Emphasizes the need for cooperation in cataloguing, especially of local materials. Due to unavailability of cataloguing copy from the Library of Congress and other sources for a high percentage of imprints from Arab countries and in the absence of bibliographic cooperation, libraries are doing redundant cataloguing and thus wasting both time and money. Reviews the current state of bibliographic cooperation, discusses prospects for further cooperation, and highlights difficulties in cooperation. Concludes with recommendations that the King Fahd National Library develop a national cooperative cataloguing programme with specific goals, set guidelines and prepare rules and procedures for participating libraries to contribute in various cooperative cataloguing programmes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
