    Abstract
University education continues to be revolutionized by the use of Web-based teaching and learning systems. Following on from "The Digital University: Reinventing the Academy", this book provides a fully up-to-date and practical guide to using and implementing this important technology. Looking specifically at asynchronous collaboration, it covers:- policies- management of collaboration- distance learning- support for authoring- course design- educational metadata schemaand will be an essential buy for managers, lecturers, administrators, department heads and researchers. It includes a foreword by Ben Shneiderman, Director of the HCI Laboratory at the University of Maryland, USA.

    Abstract
Information seeking is a fundamental human activity. In the modern world, it is frequently conducted through interactions with search systems. The retrieval and comprehension of information returned by these systems is a key part of decision making and action in a broad range of settings. Advances in data availability coupled with new interaction paradigms, and mobile and cloud computing capabilities, have created a broad range of new opportunities for information access and use. In this comprehensive book for professionals, researchers, and students involved in search system design and evaluation, search expert Ryen White discusses how search systems can capitalize on new capabilities and how next-generation systems must support higher order search activities such as task completion, learning, and decision making. He outlines the implications of these changes for the evolution of search evaluation, as well as challenges that extend beyond search systems in areas such as privacy and societal benefit.

    Abstract
The Joint Academic Network (JANET) was inaugurated in 1984, combining the functions of several previous academic and research networks. It is a private X.25 packet-switched network, managed by the Network Executive, and funded by the Computer Board for the Universities and Research Counsils. JANET now provides a data communicatons infrastructure, an internet, between the local area networks of over 100 universities, polytechnics, research institutions, and others, including the British Library. Discusses the information services available to the academic community, the role of libraries (particularly the British Library) in providing them, and the techniques available.

    Abstract
The influence of digital technology on higher education libraries is discussed by recognised experts. The Kanazawa institute of Technology is Japan's largest institution of higher education specialising in engineering and technology. It is a world leader and collaborator in electronic initiatives, often in the forefront of systems design and telecommunications advancement. It is also the site of an annual symposium series on digital library development. The authors have pulled together an International cadre of leading thinkers and experimenters, all of whom have participated in these symposia, to provide their considered opinions concerning the influence of digital technology on teaching and learning in general, and the role of the library in the educational enterprise in particular. Their contributions have, in turn, been arranged into four thematic groupings, which range from envisioning the future, and facing major challenges, to creating projects and programmes, and developing digital libraries. An informative read for anyone involved in higher education.

    Abstract
Openness is not a given on the Internet. Technical standards--the underlying architecture that enables interoperability among hardware and software from different manufacturers--increasingly control individual freedom and the pace of innovation in technology markets. Heated battles rage over the very definition of "openness" and what constitutes an open standard in information and communication technologies. In Opening Standards, experts from industry, academia, and public policy explore just what is at stake in these controversies, considering both economic and political implications of open standards. The book examines the effect of open standards on innovation, on the relationship between interoperability and public policy (and if government has a responsibility to promote open standards), and on intellectual property rights in standardization--an issue at the heart of current global controversies. Finally, Opening Standards recommends a framework for defining openness in twenty-first-century information infrastructures. Contributors discuss such topics as how to reflect the public interest in the private standards-setting process; why open standards have a beneficial effect on competition and Internet freedom; the effects of intellectual property rights on standards openness; and how to define standard, open standard, and software interoperability.

    Abstract
Combines theory and practice of library user training into a framework for teaching information skills in school libraries. The main focus is on in secondary schools (ages 11-18) but teachers and librarians in upper primary and secondary schools and in further education colleges can bebefit from the work. The PLUS model proposed covers: purpose; location; use; and self evaluation. The intention is not to suggest that the PLUS model is radically different from other but to provide an integrated framework to be used both by pupils and those who support them
