    Abstract
    Wikipedia advocates a strict "neutral point of view" (NPOV) policy. However, although originally a U.S-based, English-language phenomenon, the online, user-created encyclopedia now has versions in many languages. This study examines the extent to which content and perspectives vary across cultures by comparing articles about famous persons in the Polish and English editions of Wikipedia. The results of quantitative and qualitative content analyses reveal systematic differences related to the different cultures, histories, and values of Poland and the United States; at the same time, a U.S./English-language advantage is evident throughout. In conclusion, the implications of these findings for the quality and objectivity of Wikipedia as a global repository of knowledge are discussed, and recommendations are advanced for Wikipedia end users and content developers.

    Abstract
    The purposes of this study were to explore college students' perceptions, uses of, and motivations for using Wikipedia, and to understand their information behavior concerning Wikipedia based on social cognitive theory (SCT). A Web survey was used to collect data in the spring of 2008. The study sample consisted of students from an introductory undergraduate course at a large public university in the midwestern United States. A total of 134 students participated in the study, resulting in a 32.8% response rate. The major findings of the study include the following: Approximately one-third of the students reported using Wikipedia for academic purposes. The students tended to use Wikipedia for quickly checking facts and finding background information. They had positive past experiences with Wikipedia; however, interestingly, their perceptions of its information quality were not correspondingly high. The level of their confidence in evaluating Wikipedia's information quality was, at most, moderate. Respondents' past experience with Wikipedia, their positive emotional state, their disposition to believe information in Wikipedia, and information utility were positively related to their outcome expectations of Wikipedia. However, among the factors affecting outcome expectations, only information utility and respondents' positive emotions toward Wikipedia were related to their use of it. Further, when all of the independent variables, including the mediator, outcome expectations, were considered, only the variable information utility was related to Wikipedia use, which may imply a limited applicability of SCT to understanding Wikipedia use. However, more empirical evidence is needed to determine the applicability of this theory to Wikipedia use. Finally, this study supports the knowledge value of Wikipedia (Fallis, [2008]), despite students' cautious attitudes toward Wikipedia. The study suggests that educators and librarians need to provide better guidelines for using Wikipedia, rather than prohibiting Wikipedia use altogether.

    Abstract
    Wikipedia, like other encyclopedias, includes biographies of notable people. However, because it is jointly written by many contributors, it is subject to constant manipulation by contributors attempting to add biographies of non-notable people. Over time, Wikipedia has developed inclusion criteria for notable people (e.g., receiving a significant award) based on which newly contributed biographies are evaluated. In this paper we present and analyze a set of simple indicators that can be used to predict which article will eventually be accepted. These indicators do not refer to the content itself, but to meta-content features (such as the number of categories that the biography is associated with) and to author-based features (such as if it is a first-time author). By training a classifier on these features, we successfully reached a high predictive performance (area under the receiver operating characteristic [ROC] curve [AUC] of 0.97) even though we overlooked the actual biography text.

    "Mit dem imponierenden Anblick in Leder gebundener Lexikonrücken können sie nicht mithatten. Sie bieten auch nicht das Vergnügen, das das Stöbern in den schweren Wälzern bereiten kann. Wenn es aber darum geht; gezielt nach Begriffen zu suchen und komplexe Zusammenhänge mit Texten, Tönen oder Filmen darzustellen, sind CD-Roms und DVDs klassischen Lexika überlegen. Seit kurzem auf dem Markt ist die neueste Ausgabe jenes Lexikons, dessen Name im deutschen Sprachraum synonym für die gesamte Gattung ist: der Brockhaus. Zu den wichtigsten Neuheiten des Brockhaus multimedial 2005 gehören nach Auskunft der Brockhaus Duden Neue Medien GmbH mit Sitz in Mannheim ein Länderpuzzle, Statistikfunktionen und Tipps zum Schreiben von Hausarbeiten in der Schule und im Studium. Beim Länderpuzzle kann der Nutzer sein Geographiewissen testen, indem er, zum Beispiel die Staaten eines Kontinents der Wirklichkeit entsprechend anordnet. Den Blick auf die Erde, den Mond und - zum ersten Mal - auch den Mars ermöglicht ein dreidimensionaler Atlas. Das Lexikon umfasst neben interaktiven Animationen und Videos insgesamt 240 000 Artikel und 315 000 Stichwörter. Hinzu kommen mehr als 19 500 Abbildungen und der Online-Zugriff auf zwei Millionen Bilder der Deutschen Presse-Agentur. Das Multimedialexikon für Windows wird in zwei Versionen angeboten: Der Brockhaus multimedial 2005 premium auf sechs CDs oder einer DVD kostet rund 90 Euro, die Standardversion rund 40 Euro. Eine neue Version des Fischer Weltalmanach (rund 20 Euro) hat United Soft Media (USM) mit Sitz in München in den Handel gebracht. Mit Hilfe einer neuen, interaktiven Weltkarte kann der Nutzer dabei aktualisierte Daten zur Weltpolitik abrufen. Die Datenbank enthält Informationen zu 194 Staaten der Welt sowie zu Organisationen, Personen und zu den Themen Wirtschaft, Umwelt und Kultur. Zur genauen Orientierung können Karten und Grafiken aufgerufen werden. Die Daten aus verschiedenen Ländern können miteinander verglichen und als Tabellen in der Weltkarte dargestellt werden. Ergänzt wird der Weltalmanach durch die Integration der kompletten Daten aus dem Fischer Länderlexikon, so dass zum Beispiel auch Informationen zur Geschichte, Geographie und zum Klima abgerufen werden können. Der Fischer Weltalmanach 2005 wird ausschließlich auf CD-Rom für das Betriebssystem Windows ausgeliefert.

    Keine Frage, die "Encarta 2006" wird von Brockhaus' Schritt in das Hardware-Segment überschattet. Im Vergleich zum "Brockhaus multimedial 2006" braucht sich das Produkt aber keineswegs zu verstecken, sind die Inhalte doch gleichermaßen auf Bildungsniveau. Zudem kostet die umfangreichste Variante in diesem Jahr nur 60 Euro. Der Atlas der "Encarta" gefällt außerdem besser, weil er nicht nur ansprechender gestaltet ist, sondern auch weiterführende Informationen zu den Ländern geschickter mit Querverweisen verlinkt. Doch da Anwender diese Features ohnehin kennen, lohnt ein Blick auf eine weitere Neuheit: Vor kurzem kam erstmals die "Redshift Enzyklopädie Weltall" auf den Markt, die von United Soft Media (USM) unter dem Label National Geographic vertrieben wird. Zum fairen Preis von 50 Euro erfährt man alles Wissenswerte über die Forschungshistorie, angefangen bei den Mayas über die Griechen bis hin zu Einstein und seinen Nachkommen. Etliche QuickTime-Filme erläutern all das, was zu einem genaueren Verständnis des Themenkomplexes Universum notwendig ist. Wer nüchterne Fakten studieren möchte, ruft einfach das Astronomielexikon auf. Im unteren Preissegment tut sich hingegen nicht viel. Eine Ausnahme bildet USM. Der Münchner Verlag legt das schon fast in Vergessenheit geratene "Bertelsmann Universallexikon" neu auf. Das Programm bietet nicht mehr als grundlegende Dinge, hat also rein informativen Charakter. Doch was soll man für 15 Euro schon anderes erwarten? Die Crux: Da kommt wieder die Wikipedia-Bewegung mit ihrem kostenfreien Internetportal zum Zug, ist der Umfang an Artikeln doch immens gestiegen. Wer jedoch auf verifiziertes Wissen in Hülle und Fülle zurückgreifen will, sollte sich eher an Brockhaus oder Microsoft halten."
